Great new project! The 1UZ is a great engine, I've had a few in race cars. But you should toss a turbo on the 4cyl that's currently in it. Show the internet how much power that engine can actually make before swapping it.
Also, 1UZ to manual swaps don't come cheap.

Here’s my two cents....I’m 59, love NA v8’s, manual transmissions and hauling ass, but then I thought who would be in the market for an older mini truck, usually younger guys who are more into the turbo powered engines and would probably be interested in watching you add a turbo as well as learning the best way to go about it, so if it will get the next generation into working on and modifying what they drive ( with limited income) I say fix the drop and transmission, add a turbo and drive the wheels off of it.

    • @ItsDaJax

V8s are awesome, but they aren't the only way to make power. Really it just depends on the goal, I guess. Like I'm wanting an 80s Caprice to build, and I'm thinking about either just generically building a 350 for it, or seeing how much potential a 3.8 would have, and that's only because the 4.3 has like zero aftermarket. I'm not looking for 800hp in a daily, and I want a decent balance and keeping the car light. I also thought about an Atlas, 2.5 turbo, and an Escalades 6.2. Whatever it is, there needs to be a way to bolt up a manual, and for that, I'm thinking Tremec 3660.

My daughter wanted to drive my 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7l 5speed manual when she started driving so we got a 2018 Forester with a manual. It worked! She now drives the Forester away at college just because we wanted her to have a reliable car. But she always drives the Ram when home 👍

I had a 2003 Nissan frontier, 4x4 SVE. Was what a 3.3.liter supercharged 5 speed was awesome in the Colorado mountains.

That intro killed me. My fiance and I were on the couch watching and I rewound it and said that sounds like me! Even the part of it being her fault. Especially bc I just bought a 94 bronco bc she wanted one ;)

I would definitely like to see a 1uz swap. Because I haven’t seen anybody do that with a Tacoma

Good looking truck. I have a 2002 xtracab. Most Kia / Hyundai factory wheel are also direct bolt ons because they match the bolt pattern 5x114.3 and their center bore is 67.1mm. I'm running Hyundai Veloster 18"wheels w 1.5" spacers to get the offset right. 1UZ is a great choice

I vote 1UZ. I'm currently rehabbing a 98 Taco standard cab short bed for my daughter. My plan is if the truck is still in good shape when she is done with it to 1uz swap it.

1UZ is cool but adapting the manual trans is a pain. I looked into it when I had an 89 Toyota pickup. Also the starter for the 1UZ is in under the intake just FYI

  • @Broadpaw_Fox
    @Broadpaw_Fox 2 года назад

@ 8:45 - the grinding each gear in the trans is likely because someone changed the fluid and used differential oil. If you use GL5 fluid in a manual trans it screws up the syncros and causes grinding like that. You have to use GL4 (it doesn't have the hypoid modifier in it).
You can try changing the fluid with a 50/50 mix of a good GL4 (or MTF) and regular ATF. The extra detergents in the ATF might help scrub the syncros off, as well as it being slightly thinner. Run it for several hundred miles (lots of city driving to work the syncros) and then you should be able to change it to a proper fluid and be OK, or at least a bit better. ;)

Do the 1uz! Grab a 4.3 from like an sc430 or gs430 or an ls430 OR what would be really cool is if you get the 5.0L from a 600HL

I say go crazy with the suspension and make it handle like it's on rails, then build the engine thats in it now just enough to turbo it( cam, springs, ring gap and a complete refresh with all new bearings and seals), then the small body work and tint, then wrap it and run it as a cheap on gas, great running, great handling daily/shop truck!!

A little off subject. But I don’t see very many RUclipsrs from my home state. Really cool what you do. Also, I agree with a lot of the other comments. I would either procharge it or turbo it. Those 2.4 4 cylinders put out quite a bit of power for such a small engine.

when you get the new block from the stepside put that 4.8 supercharged on the tacoma along with a t56 trans dam bro now we're matching all truck i have 3 sierras and 1 87hilux but same p.o.s as 97tacoma lol

Have you considered doing a 5vzfe swap? Toyota did not produce a standard cab, short bed 2wd v6 manual one but all the pieces to do so are pretty straight forward plus you could then install the trd supercharger but keep costs reasonable with factory parts? my extended cab 2wd 5vz trucks rips. i also have a few videos on my build with on track footage if at all curious on a ''drift build''.

I like the project the most it has the most potential of being a real headache and edge of your seat build. I’d take the 4.8 out of the step side and mate it with a t56, and a 9”

The first car I actually learned to drive a stick on was a 85 911. The pedal set up is a little different than most cars since it’s set up like the old VW.

LT I have had 3 Toyota mini trucks. 2 4X4 trucks and they all had the 2.2L. 4 cylinder in them. 1 I turned into a rock crawler and 1 was a daily winter driver in Minnesota. The last one was a 84 2WD it had a carb. On it and that thing thought it was a 400 hp 350 chevy. It would beat the pants off of the early 90s TBI chevy trucks. It was a nasty little truck and hard on rear tires and was a stock truck for the most part.
So my 2 cents is to turbo it or their was a company year's ago that made a belt driven supper charger for them. Very cool it bolted between the head and intake. I seen a couple of them. And the guys that had them said they made over 300 hp. Their used to be lots of engine upgrade parts for them. I have been out of the mini truck world for years know. But they are fun. My wife loved the 3 we had and they where all stick trucks. Good luck and hope your wife enjoys the truck also.

Taco! looks pretty good with the mustang gt wheels
turboing the 2.4 would be fun to see, and should keep most of the mpg
looks like the 1uz and a all aluminum LS weigh about the same

You know how the fox body Mustang seats get 'the lean?' Same thing here- The reason that the truck is uncomfortable is because the seat frame is bent. All the Tacomas of that era that I have driven had high mileage and the driver's seat was terrible. I sat in one that was a low mileage survivor and it was amazing how much more comfortable it was.
