I've heard this played live so many times, and you are absolutely correct, that the electric sitar is the key that was missing from your version. Mind you, Van Halen never used the electric sitar live in concert the several times I saw them as a young teen, but it must have been included in the recorded version. I never saw Van Hagar, so I can't speak to how they played it then. ...and when they performed this live, EVH's guitar tone sounded so thick, you didn't even miss that sitar. I can't even begin to describe how well they performed this live, oftentimes closing with this song (except for the very last night they played together live in the US as Van Halen, where Roth gathered the boys together afterward for an impromptu acapella version of Happy Trails they did NOT play the two previous nights, as they were heading off to Europe, none of us knowing they were splitting up once they finished the European leg). This is my absolute favorite VH song of all time, and although I'm just one person, I really appreciate you sharing this video. Congrats on scoring that awesome electric sitar, too! Looks like you're already having so much fun with it!
I used to teach with a guy named Paul, almost every night, i would come out of my guitar lessons and he would be playing on the store's guitars and amps and would say "hey man! You know that solo from ?? I used to play it like this *shreds notes* but i listened closely again and it's actually *shreds slightly differently*" and he was so freaking awesome. He could play just like EVH, extremely impressive.
I remember hearing this solo for the first time as a kid and being incredibly confused about what effect he might’ve gotten to get that sitar effect before eventually learning it was indeed an electric sitar, and that just made me love the solo even more because the effect itself just sounded so damn cool in the mix
Ed continues to astound and amaze! I’ve been playing guitar for over 40 years and still can’t get the Runnin’ With The Devil leads to sound exact. The magic that was EVH!
Oh noooo, he's right! I'm never going to unhear that. It's like the "oomph, hey!, oomph, hey!" accenting the snare in Pour Some Sugar On Me - once you hear it, you'll never un-hear it.
Did I know? Yes. For four decades. It was mentioned so many times in various guitar magazine articles back in the day it was considered "common knowledge". Terms like "his sitar laden lead on Ain't..." and such And the double tracking and hard panning left/right made it easily accessible to the ears of anybody who had hear some George Harrison/ Beatles or Ravi Shankar. But I think I have a few years on you, and it's a great piece of information to pass on
Another great video Mike! I remember when I first was learning the solo and was wondering why it sounded wrong and I clicked on your channel and it showed that one video about this song from a while ago. We all love a Van Halen classic! Rock on Mike 🎸🎸🎸
I remember having a magazine with the transcription of that song way back in the very late 80s and yes it says the solo was layered with a Coral electric sitar.
Congrats on 815k Subscribers! Love the new instrument, I always thought the sound of the sitar was pretty cool and unique. As always love the They Live! shirt. I'd recently spent about a solid month listening to this album in my car, this is one of my all time favourite VH songs, I mean the whole album rocks of course. Whenever I hear this song I think of the solo video you did for this song. Definitely one I have to learn. So great to know even more of the detail behind this track, I could really hear the 'something missing', just a little something not quite filling the space in the music, was such a relieving feeling hearing it when it was put back in haha, it sounded complete.
I guess maybe I have a really good ear? I definitely heard the sitar in the mix before and knew it was there. I thought maybe they played an actual traditional sitar to back it up. Didn't know they made electric sitars. But yes, once you catch it, you can't unhear it.
The sitar reverberations were what I thought of when I both heard your solo and then thought of the actual solo. It's easy to hear in the mix. I knew that's what was missing in your solo
Eddy explained that in guitar player magazine around 78' if my memory is correct. He said that he bought the sitar on his way to the studio and recorded it right away . The result was perfect(to me).👍
I knew it was more than 1 guitar tracks. I just didn't know what kind. I'm not great at reading music, but I have a great ear. I can normally tell the difference between multiple layered guitars doing the same riff, and a effect that makes a similar sound.
Yes, I did finally figure out there was a sitar in there many years ago but only after an extended period of "mad scientist" experimentation trying effects, doubling, speed picking, speed picking in tandem with whammy bar, and so on. A sitar was the only thing that made any real sense to me after a while.
That's awesome, I never knew that, despite this being one of my all-time favourite songs. Another possible video idea might be to learn Primary from Van Halen III which is literally an electric sitar solo lol. It would certainly bring some light to one of the most overlooked pieces in their career.
I had read something about EVH using the electric sitar for this, but it's been very recently. Pretty crazy to learn of some of these different tricks bands used! I certainly would have never picked it out. Lol.
I've got one of those myself and I knew about it in Ain't Talkin' Bout Love. You hear it in Steve Vai's music all the time (and he picked it up from Zappa); the arpeggios in For The Love Of God for instance. It's also big in 70's prog rock; Steve Howe from Yes loved to pull one out all the time.
When I heard the solo, I got instantly reminded of Offspring's Noodles playing - I wonder if he was inspired by Van Halen in some way. They have tons of songs with a slight oriental vibe in their guitar parts, especially the 90s stuff.
This guy really has got my Mondino's memories from the beginning and catch that I'm pointing exactly there when I can be 🆓️ from those annoyng tabs. Namastè.
🎸🎸i just checked the song...unbelievable...i never heard the sitar or maybe i just did not expect it to be there...now that i know...i can hardly hear the guitar anymore ! 🎸🎸
Very cool and no I did not know. However Im wondering if a bit of detune or 12 string / sitar effect bled into your patch (if using a multi effect pedal) would provide enough edge for live playing. I may have to experiment now!
@@TheArtofGuitar I replied but it didnt take. It was on his IG about 6 days ago. He was at a studio with a Coral Sitar and he posted a pic and mentioned the Ain't Talking Bout Love solo
I could always hear the sitar in that solo but I thought it was a combination of pedal and Eddie's known reputation for tinkering with sound. I didn't realise it was an actual sitar.
Even when u playedthe solo without the sitar, I still hear guitar come in in the right ear the last measure of the solo? Was that panning of overdub ? Thanks for ur great videos 👍😁🎸
Yes, the crazy thing that is an electric sitar! It really adds a great bit of pizzazz to the solo. If your rendition was more in-your-face it would be just like Van Halen! :)
Damn!! I've been wanting that same sitar for 2 years!! Everytime I try to save up for it though some major disaster happens in my life and I have to direct my funds elsewhere... 😢 I'm curious but it probably does not work.. but would you be able to use an eBow on that and still get the sitar effect?

Good for you taking a break from videos, Mike. It's important for creators to be fresh and not burnt out!

This reminds of that Sanctus lyric, I think it went something like uhhhh "We will attack with sitars of sadness" 😅
Oh man, that would be quite the song. haha. Sitars in Drop D and all.

That is awesome. I always thought there was something missing too. I never thought it was a sitar though. Crazy good job figuring that out.
I like the sound of my 4 string tenor banjo for some leads. It sounds awesome.

I definitely recall reading a Guitar World (or some magazine) back in the late 80s or early 90s that discussed the electric sitar in this song.
That is insane! Immediately heard the connection. Nice work. Who would have thunk it, a sitar!!!
His offset tunings actually make a pretty big difference too when you play songs like this
Cool video. Yes, I remember reading Guitar World back then (cover story 1985) that he did use a sitar on "A.T.B.L". He also said he played one on VH3.
I did know about the Sitar actualy, but I haven't thought about it for years. Cool find though. It really makes the solo work.

How did they handle this live? They just skipped the sitar? Anyway, definitely sounds much closer to the recording than the guitar alone.

Close to the Edge has plenty of the sitar on the verses.
I knew it since the 90's. It's written in my old tab book by Wolf Marshall 😉
I seem to remember you mentioning that it had two parts in your easy EVH solo video. I don't remember you actually breaking out the sitar though.

Mike you want a good song for the sitar, seventeen years locust by Rob zombie and JOHN5
Haha! They live T-shirt! Awesome movie! 😂😂
I knew it was used. I just wasn't exactly sure how it was played underneath.
Any chance it was doubled as they both sound like they are missing the sound a bit but both of them would seem to nail it.
well damn!
I always thought it was an open string ringing, maybe the high E.
I found an isolated guitar track. Can confirm the sitar in the background. That’s pretty cool.

Where the hell did you find that evh?
Sounds like even the low tremolo picking is on the sitar as well…

Mike who? Also, I used to fake it with a chorus pedal in the obvious parts. It worked, mostly.
Always droning on about sitar! And Eddie’s Ragas to Riches story…
Cool, I didn't know about this. I always thought the same, it didn't sound right, my best guess was I wasn't playing some necessary open string. 😂
