I saw her sing this role in San Francisco and she was amazing. Spectacular vocal fireworks and flawless technique. Her Gilda in Rigoletto with Ingvar Wixell was also splendid.

Luciana Serra is a Goddess of singing and having seen her several times on stage I can say that the recording does not reproduce the fullness of harmonics of her voice that was not big but capable to fill with her vibration the volume also of big theatres

I absolutely LOVE Luciana but I just think her voice is just too sweet to play the Queen of the Night. I mean her technique is flawless, her voice is as always inhumanly perfect and she sounds mesmerizingly beautiful and pleasant, don't get me wrong. But she just doesnt give me that "crazy evil queen who urges her daughter to kill a man or she will disown her and hate her forever" vibe, you know. her voice is smooth, light and sweet, even here. idk, just feel like thats not the right role for her to interpret.
Mozart always need a lighter bright voice for the high sopranos, because Mozart has 5-7 voices (soprano-many times a high and a lower soubrette, mezzo, tenor, baritone-sometimes a baritone and a bass baritone, and bass), too dark would fall into the mezzo voice category. It’s not like 19th century bel canto where the voices are required to cover a greater range so you only have three voices-soprano, tenor, and baritone, that’s it. So you can have a darker more dramatic voice to cover those ranges, like Maria Callas. Mozart used more stringent classical harmonious theory so too dark a voice for a soprano would not harmonize well, amongst other things.
I have yet to find anyone else sing the notes so perfectly. Other performances are either sharp or flat. Luciana Serra in this performance is the most accurate.

The singing is perfect. Serra is one of the greatest sopranos of all time. But for overall performance of the Queen of the anight, I prefer Diana Damrau. Not only is Damrau scary, but her clear and perfect pronunciation of the German lyrics makes a huge difference in my opinion.
No comparation in coloritura and powerful. Luciana Serra is perfect in german diction. The only part I prefer Diana Damrau is the psichological interpretation of the Queen like mother...
This is late in her career; it's what happens to the voice when you're older, that white sound. And you can hear how she struggles to keep up with the tempo. However, considering her age, there's still some amazing singing there....her triplets are so much better than 99% of people who sing this.
they should've let Battle perform the role of the Queen, because the current lady rushed the mess outta this aria and failed to engage Battle, actively, because she was so focused on squeaking and squealing those notes out.... such a shame.
