Having done this route by road, twenty years ago, the sequence of stations travelling eastwards out of Palermo was familiar. Sicily imakes for the most fabulous of holidays: but it took three visits to familiarise us with the island, and the Aeolian Islands, too. Etna and Stromboli are both worth visiting: as is Enna - the biggest hill-top city you will ever encounter, with views as far as Etna! Thank you for this nostalgic post. Good to know Cefalu is to get a by-pass: although its Cathedral is a must-see.
@@RailRelaxation We're too old now to travel as once we did (72 & 77); but Sicily and the Azores have been two favourite destinations throughout our lives. I love volcanoes: so both destinations have a lot of 'volcanic excitement' to offer. Shame I have missed out on the Circumetnea train!
Wow ! FANTASTIC journey ! It became my new great favorite video , Images excellent, good job , amazing places , never imagined thing like this. Thanks so much .
After a long time I can see a video of this beautiful channel!!!!!!!! The Palermo Messina line is certainly a masterpiece, but in its single track section it is still lacking in terms of passenger flows. Imagine that to go to Catania a train passes through the interior and takes 6-7 hours! Too! Now they are building a new line! Unfortunately for years in Italy we have been thinking about building high-speed lines, neglecting regional lines like this one. The infrastructural gap is there and it can be seen. Much has been done with the 12 km Peloritano Tunnel and the double track sections. The line is beautiful and crosses important centers such as Cefalù, Santo Stefano di Camastra (famous for its ceramics, as can also be seen in the station), Capo d'Orlando, Barcellona-Pozzo di Gotto (not to be confused with the Catalan metropolis) and Milazzo. Landscape of immeasurable beauty. I did the route from Messina to Trapani way back in 2002, almost twenty-two years ago by car! Back then there wasn't even a whole motorway and the SS113 state road skirted the coast and the single-track railway! Beautiful landscapes, beautiful sea, beautiful islands, beautiful people and above all the food is great! You brought back wonderful memories with this line! Another beautiful, very slow but very characteristic line is the Siracusa-Gela, a diesel line that crosses the Iblean Mountains in Ragusa and develops on helical tunnels in Southern Europe! Even the more modern Messina-Syracuse which passes not far from Etna is worth it! Thanks for immortalizing Italy again! Great David!
@wladislaw79 Thank you, Wladislaw, for your very interesting comment. I did not know Sicily before, it is very beautiful. I have one more line from there, for now. I wish you a nice day and it is good to read your comments again.

@francescoditora7180 I am glad that you like this videos. I enjoy very much making them and enjoy travelling and getting to know all those wonderful lines. It is always like this I guess, the old and winding lines cutting the scenic landscapes and faster lines without so nice views. There are some good solutions like the Furka pass....the old line is used by heritage train and the new line is used by the ordinary traffic.
Great video, thank you! But how technology is being improved... I travel from Palermo to Messina, watch the sea, and at the same time listen to music on the FM radio from Palermo. But in fact, I'm sitting 2,700 km from Palermo in my kitchen in the Moscow region and drinking coffee... :) With greetings from Russia.
And my grandpa house is on the left, on the beach, between San Giorgio and Patti Marina. It's from 2019 that i can't succed to pass my vacation there. Sun warm, gentle mistral wind, Aeolian Islands (Lipari) on the left, Milazzo Point in the front and the Our Lady of Tindary's Sanctuary, glowing in the sun on the right. I missed (and is still missing) it very much.
Something something America something elections something something FREEDOM! and DEMOCRACY! something Ukraine something something something Second Russian Revolution. Not blaming you, of course.

It's a fantastic line. I went on 2017 from Palermo to Messina and last year from Palermo to Enna. This year will hope take the Intercity Notte Siracusa-Milano Centrale direct (21h)
What a wonderful drive along the coast, plus the initially soft light of the morning sun... GREAT!!! 👍👍👍 Divided into daily planned stages, it's a real pleasure - rather difficult when viewed in one go, and who wants to set the playback speed at twice the speed... you'll miss out on all the splendor of the landscape 🙄 At the end it was unfortunately clouded by the many tunnels! But that's probably the price you have to "pay" for it: getting from A to B quickly - the fun of traveling and enjoying the view unfortunately takes a back seat, but here in Germany it's no different with the new ICE routes ... 🫤 At the beginning it was apparent that the city of Palermo probably had a garbage collection problem - or the garbage collection had just gone on strike 😝😂 How else can you explain that the garbage ends up on the tracks and not in the container or the landfill... 🤔 And one more question at the end, if it's allowed: the Go-Pro camera was probably attached to the outside of the train again!?? Surely you need a permit for that... and how do you manage to complete the entire journey WITHOUT ANY INSECTS on your lens??? 🤔🤔 Sorry for the long comment, it was a long drive too 😄 Good luck with all the wonderful projects and best regards 🖖
Regarding insects - well, if camera does get hit, video doesn't get published (it's a pure example of survival bias - You simply don't see videos when camera does get hit by insects). Also, putting two cameras next to each other can reduce this risk (or risk that one camera shuts down for variety of reasons - battery, overheating or whatever other reasons).
A very nice video! So since 2001 if you are traveling from Messina to Palermo you think you're on the wrong train for the first few minutes as it looks like you're going along the Ionian sea to Catania. But then the train turns right into that long Peloritani tunnel. Where did the old line go? Did it go all the way around the peninsula or did it also cut across the hills between Ionian and Thyrrhenian sea?
Most of the small rivers passing by look like they have dried up. In some places, there is so little space along the route that it is unclear how the second track will be located there. I don't know about the locals, but I am delighted to see such large infrastructure projects being built and put into operation.
