Thanks for the input on some of these sleeping options. I've really been tossing ideas back and forth and can't make up my mind about bivy/hammocks or ground tarps/tents and a sleeping bag/pad. Weight matters since I'm a small dude so your advice for making the proper choice on a long rage trip is great.

An excellent and informative video once again Paul, I esp liked the advise reg the use of bivi bags. Reg negativity i've learnt over time to completely ignore them and don't respond to their comments, if its anything nasty they automatically get banned and I dont think twice about doing it. I find if you leave nasty comments under your videos they become magnets for other nasty comments and thus change the energy of your videos. Keep up the great work ~Peace~

Was that guy really suggesting that people should have to pay to go into the woods? Get a license indeed, a car license, fishing license, hunting license, and now a woodsman/hiking license? Like you said Paul education is the key. Not lining the pockets of the local government for the privilege of enjoying the outdoors, permits to camp in certain areas yes I agree it helps to fund maintenance and to keep the land underdeveloped but a license seems ridiculous.

And then i wrapped myself in the blanket at night

Tyvek is quite noisy as tarp during windy days - could be fixed if Tyvek is washed before tarp creation. I like your podcast and your attitude how you answering all questions.

Instead of washing, because I was afraid it might lose some of its characteristics such as waterproofness I have taken it and balled it up and or folded it up repeatedly. I would do it while watching videos and it really does soften it and quiet it down.

    • @theprophetez1357
      @theprophetez1357 4 года назад +1

Instead of washing, which I did once I prefer to just handle it a lot. I fold it in different ways and crumple it and open it repeatedly. This makes it get softer and quiets it down.
I did this for my homemade bivy and for a unique tent I designed along with a few other simpler things. I have a ten foot roll left over from a job and plan to make a three man tent soon with my new design.

    Hi Paul.
I understand what you are saying about folk who leave abusive comments. when it first happened to me I was quite upset but soon I got a "thick skin" regarding them. Now I just totally ignore them and it's like water off a ducks back.
I had a bad night in a bivi bag once. I was using a Dutch hooped bivi on a sub zero night. Zipped myself in
and settled in for the night but the next morning the bivi and sleeping bag outer were dripping wet. Great tip on using the sleeve of a coat as a kind of elephants trunk.
    All the best

How do they expect to get better? I can take those books into the woods. I can set up my camp. I can read a little bit. I can bring a book about knots and practice those in the wild a little bit not having books is a bad move. Thanks for everything you do Paul, most of us appreciate you!!

Thanks for sharing your views Paul. It's good to hear a voice of reason in an era where such a thing seems to be a rarety. Re criticisms, I have had the same accusations directed to my channel. It seems that some people just like to be obnoxious in an online environment. Not much that can be done about it apart from more education I suppose. Also re tyvek, the waterproof ness of it is in question. The general white DuPont brand stuff used as house moisture barrier isn't all that waterproof. The Henry shires Tarp Tent company used to sell a tent called the sublight . It was advertised as weather resistant and not waterproof for this very reason. It makes for quite a cool tent in very hot and sunny conditions though, due to the white reflective surface. Please don't feel the need to respond to this comment as I know that you are very busy, just wanted to give a bit of feedback, Frazer

Those hater trolls probably couldn't find their way to the other side of town, or cook, just trying to be clever ☆♡☆ blankets are bulky ☆ my tarp loves to get wet ☆ those who don't know how to behave might need a visit from the local wood woser, who might rub their noses in it, then be made to clean it up. So much rubbish is dropped within sight of a garbage bin, including grey plastic bags. Stupidity should not be tolerated (cranky old man speaking )

Hi Paul, great work, your video's and those of Ray's are all and enough education anyone needs. No one has any excuses or justification to mess up the countryside and here in the UK/Eire, we have some of the most beautiful in the World. But as a 'licence' holder of long-standing (guns & fishing) for some 40 years now; for something like bushcraft, a licence would only really work if you had a full time ranger service (with Police powers) like they do in the USA (state parks, inland waterways etc). Think the problem in the UK, e.g. illegal, stealth camping without permission, damage from fires, littering etc stems from the fact that the people who do it know that the law covering it is civil law and would cost the landowner hundreds if not thousands of pounds in legal fees to press a case against them for trespass etc, so landowners will think twice before doing it, just to watch the perpetrators get off with a £200 fine at magistrates court! In much the same way it would be absolutely of no use having a licence card or piece of paper if there was no one to check or enforce it at least! It would need a whole new dept setting up, a lot of admin, legal and outdoor employees to enforce new provisions of a new legislation structure and an enforcement framework and so on, and all that has to be paid for....by you the licensee's! Also the whole essence of bushcrafting is surely to get away from the very bureacracy and tribulations of daily life and to have the freedom to chill out in nature and not have to be constantly thinking 'oh do I have my licence, is it up to date! and so on. In otherwords, not having those things with us as a constant reminder of the very things we are trying to get away from and that we are still effectively 'under someone else's control' for the period that you are outdoors and so on. But think you have hit the proverbial nail; education is definitely the way forward Paul, the ultimate key...steve

In respect to the mess some people leave behind them, disgustingly ignorant, most people respect our land, more so with native indigenous, but we now have a massive foreign immigrant population that has zero respect for us or our countryside, they squat places of land and they do leave everything in a mess in their wake, irrespective of who they are though, iff they carry it in they should carry it back out with them, people need to wake up and open their eyes to the problems immigrants bring to our country, mainly a total lack of respect for everything we stand for, atb, Paul.

As for wool blanket options out there, there is a small nepalese wool/clothing shop in my home city, and they sell yak ox wool blankets. Hi Paul,
Loved the rant on this one, first time I've seen it, really good blog and very informative as always, the last question about licensing, I know this is probably impossible, but if someone had professional instructors verified certificates to say they were trained and responsible, maybe we could be given a chance to access land in England and Wales, this could give a boost to trainers and give security and an income to farmers who own most of the land, I may be waffling, but I think in these times farmers will have to diversfy.
Hope you and Amanda and all your family are doing well.

I'm going for years in the forest, and its more common for the last few years, I think it's a unwanted effect by the survival programs
no offence, it is the education, there is no single program that says you must throw away that garbage, , such as home washing the dishes, also nobody like to do it

Social media .... never feed trolls, never assume people out there are intelligent and nice, many are just there to cause friction (not friction fires). Never apologise to anyone unless its something you feel is genuinely wrong.
You are one of a handful of people in the UK that i feel genuinely has deep knowledge of the outdoors especially bushcraft. It comes across in everything that you do, so if i want real information i know where to go.

I appreciated the questions about the backcountry license and your response. I realize this topic was broached 5 or 6 years ago, but it made me remember experiences my sons and I had in the Adirondacks of NY. (I started each of my 6 children when they reach 10 years old backpacking in that beautiful area) as we emptied our ziplock bags from our repackaged food we each carried a baggie in our pocket to pick up trail litter we found and carry it out. Sometimes I rewarded the kid with the most pieces of litter with a Snickers bar or some such reward. it was fun. I remember finding another father and son washing their dishes in a small mountain lake up there and gently correcting them and telling them that we could both be fined if the ranger for that area came through and found that garbage in the water. he took it well and we cleaned it up together. I think you're right some folks just don't know any better and to be confrontational about it would'nt have accomplished the desired result. Thanks Mr. Kirtly for all that you do to help people enjoy the little remaining wild places we still have available.

I have used tyvek and several other house wraps as Bivy/survival tarps and rain ponchos for some time. The product I like best so far is a roofing underlayment actully. They work well and breath fairly well. Made a minimum weight pack out of wrap also and carried 24lbs of gear for several days successfully. I first would say this--- the seams are the key. I have glued and taped, tried to heat weld ect. I have found several ways that work better than others. Mixing heavier materials with the wrap in some applications has worked very well.

Paul I think your channel is brilliant. I am an avid outdoors person. I have been camping and bushcrafting for many years. I watch and learn from you and other RUclipsrs thank you for sharing your wisdom. As you said some folks just can't contribute and only want to pee in everyone's cornflakes. Don't worry about the malcontents. I had my wife watch your video about stowing your food in your pack side pocket. She is a Registered Dietitian and she said your information was excellent. Thanks again!

Paul. Just a suggestion. It seems every podcast you need to clarify your view based in hundreds of nights in a bivi..thousands of nights under a hootchie..maybe just pin a quick note in vid description..a quick mention in start of podcast. It might save you repeating yourself a bit

For some reason I've missed this episode up to now. Sound advice as always. My tuppence worth regarding tarps ( over or under ). Why buy a tarp with a PU coating and then rub the coating off on a ridgeline? I use the supplied loops which are sacrificial, if they're supplied why not use them? As for the litter louts, it is very hard to reason with people who don't engage their grey matter. My pet hate is people who have a fire and leave the remains behind them as if they are doing everyone else a favour. With all the means of cooking food that are available you do not need an open fire, if you want to use solid fuel you can use a hobo stove and make negligible impact. I'm sorry I feel a rant coming on.

I seen a video with a guy who put a bivy bag inside his sleeping bag and another water vapor barrier over top. Of you are sleeping in a tent do you need a vapor barrier? And does it matter if the bivy is inside or outside the bivy and can you use a thin liner in the bivy with a sleeping bag over top like a 3 part system? Please advise for winter camping. Thanks. For the great video

Seems to me the trolls were not only ignorant of who you are, but also the different ways to learn about the outdoors. Having a good collection of books is important. I would like to see another #Askpaulkirtley in your office and covering questions around books and learning.

Thanks a lot for taking the time out of your day to share your ideas and thoughts on everything. I greatly appreciate and support the sharing of information instead of keeping it sealed since, as you mentioned in the video, new heights and levels of knowledge can be reached through intelligent discussion and by reviewing multiple angles.
Quick question, what jacket are you wearing in the video?
Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Hi Paul, Thank you for all of your great videos. I wish I would have discovered your channel before I moved to Virginia as I would definitely have attended one of your courses. I wouldn't waste your time even answering some of the idiots on the internet as they often do it to try and get a reaction from people as they lead such sad lives they have nothing better to do. Keep up the great work as I'm sure there are many, many people who gratefully appreciate the knowledge you pass on.

Great video Paul. With regards to the topic of wilderness licence and education. Through my life I've took part in a number of activities in the great outdoors one of which requires a licence. For over 30 years I've been a keen angler and always purchased a rod licence and any permits needed. I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a bailiff or had my licence checked. Even with licencing and bailiffs and the threat of very large fines I know there are 100s if not thousands of people fishing illegally in the UK. So with this in mind no type of wilderness licence is going to work. We can only hope that eventually people will learn to be more respectful to the environment through seeing the damage done through poor behaviour.

+Steves Outdoors NE Hi Steve, it's good to hear from you as always. You make a very good point with respect to fishing licences. It's not a connection I made to be honest but it is a very good analogy for what we were talking about. These things are very hard to police. Education is definitely the key but we have to be in it for the long haul. Warm regards, Paul

Absolutely with you Paul and not just because of all the invaluable advice and info I have taken from your vids and blogs. It angers me that such plonkers have nothing better to do but snipe at someone who has contributed so much to the enjoyment of the outdoors and the skills we all aspire to possess. Don't let the buggers get you down and keep up the cracking work. Thousands of us aren't wrong in following and supporting what you do - that's the acid test.

It's human nature, though, to focus on a few negatives when there are thousands of positives. I'll try harder to not let it bother me. There are a lot of people who have my back, yourself included, and I really am thankful for this. Warm regards, Paul

The last part of this vid re "Wilderness Licenses" touched on something I've been thinking about for quite a while now. The sudden upsurge of survival so-called 'reality' shows on TV disturbs me a lot. It draws in a lot of people who wish to appear educated in subjects they aren't genuinely educated about. I think this upsurge is going to cause a lot of problems for the natural environment, and for those of us who wish to enjoy it and are educated in how to live within it's system without scarring it. I am astonished at the vids on youtube where someone will go out into a beautiful area and start sawing down live trees to make a temporary shelter simply to post a how-to on youtube. I do realize that after this fad is over, nature will clean itself up, but it will take years longer for that to happen than the half-day or so it took for someone to saw down all the trees necessary to make their video. Exponential growth of this genre means exponential damage to the natural environment.
I have to praise the people like you, Mr. Kirtley, who have a lineage in teaching these skills, and having been led to Frontier Bushcaft, I'm aware of where your pedigree came from. I hope that as the fad dies out (which can't happen soon enough, IMO) it leaves only those people who really have a passion lit in their souls for bushcraft instead of hormone-fueled "survival". I love it that you take time in so many videos to differentiate between the various necessities one needs to carry, depending on what one is doing: a day-hike, a canoe trip, Boreal forest, summer, winter, etc., and whether or not it's necessary to build a shelter out of trees vs. putting up a tarp. You're a patient man.
I hope that, darwinian as it sounds, people who get their lessons from TV shows are winnowed out before they either are killed attempting some of the nonsense they have watched, or make it so that we do need wilderness licenses and governmental intervention.
This all sounds so stiff, but I can't think of any other way to politely say it. Rant over.

    • @PaulKirtley
      @PaulKirtley  8 лет назад

+pbshelleygirl Thank you for your excellent comment. You may have felt you were ranting but it came across as frank, well-reaasoned criticism of a phenomenon that bothers a good number of people I know who teach wilderness skills. The adrenaline-fuelled approach is dangerous in itself. Many of the un-reality shows are predicated on a misunderstanding of the priorities required to look after yourself in such situations. Cody Lundin is one who has pointed out this on many occasions. He has been involved in such shows, tried to change them from the inside and eventually was spat out by the machine. I've also heard from participants in various survival shows where the production team have purposely tried to match people for potential romance or potential friction. The producers need drama. That's what they are looking to sell. They are not looking to promote good practice, public education or respect of nature. They are constantly setting things up as a conflict, man vs nature, or some other form of antagonism. It is disturbing. Warm regards, Paul

As always, very good answers to interesting questions. Thanks for the video!
Have you come across Forest School lessons in the UK? I give about an hour a week to my son's school to help with these lessons. Basically the kids are taken to a woodland setting for a lesson which ranges from gathering leaves to make collages to lighting a fire to cook over and introduction to safe knife use. It certainly helps instill an appreciation and better understanding of nature in primary school children.
