I've written a diploma thesis closely related to the second question. And I have to admit that your answer was superb. Very factually accurate and hopefully equally easy to understand for the common listener

Thanks Paul; that's one of the best explanations on declination that I've ever heard, and the considerations around water purification/sterilisation was excellent.

I have a grayl water filter, which I think is perfect for bikepacking. It would be a bit bulky for ultralight backpacking, but that's not an issue here, and canoeing in the wilderness viruses are less of an issue etc. I might boil or use a gravity filter. unlike most 'pump' filters (it's sort of a pump, but an unconventional one) it filters viruses, chemical pollutants, and small amounts of heavy metals. It's got a carbon filter in it so the water tastes good too. Its one main downside is the cartridges need replacing significantly more often than most filters (because it has an integral carbon filter and is fine enough to trap viruses).
I take it hunting and such when close to agricultural areas etc. for the same reason - I'm worried about things besides bacteria and protozoa like pollutants, and I don't want to take the amount of time it takes to boil the amount I'll need to drink (which can be substantial biking!)

Thanks for mentioning chem/industrial pollutants at roadsides, it was my first thought when the Q was posed given the bikepacking context, and often get overlooked by the woods-oriented crowd.

    This is amazing.
I learned so much from this video.
I didnt even knew that water changes its boiling point as we get higher in altitude. Or that there are actually 3 Norths.
Thank you so much for this!
I'm looking forward to watch more of your videos!

Thanks as always Paul really informative. One thing I thought you may have clarified Re declination is which direction (E or W) is minus and which is plus... something that confused me in the beginning of my outdoor life.
Thank you as always Paul, you talking is still better than most "solo overnighter" videos i see on here. Very useful and informative. Cheers.

Yet more great stuff Paul, great information to the guy going bike packing, not survival but practical.
Each situation needs it's own solution, and you give that freely.
I hope that the man in the question has a wonderful trip, 👍👍☕☕

great vid and timing paul. been considering a filter for about a year now, in particular the katadyn, and feel reassured enough now. survived for months in himalayas, andes, amazon, sahara and malaysia/borneo with steri-pen, straws and pills, but think a lot of luck and just general long term traveling tolerances building up. much older now and a father so taking more precations. thanks again fella!

Hello! I wanted to ask you about stainless steel water bottles. One argument for having one is that you should be able to place it in a fire and disinfect it? I always have my M/40 stove with me but don't really know how to complement it. What's your opinion and then how would a stainless steel water bottle work in cold climates? I don't know which thread the question fits so I'm testing here?

Being prone to gut rot myself I have the Katadyn pocket for many years without a single problem. A superb bit of kit that kills the lot off. How do you feel about Potassium permanganate as a water steriliser. Obviously filter it first or even as an addition to using the Katadyn??

great video! Bought myself a Sawyer mini filter for one specific trip because of the portability but wouldnt recommend that type of a filter for a longer trip/larger amounts of water, a pump style filter might be better as recommended in the video. My filter was also wet inside for weeks after use despite my efforts to dry it, was worried about mold..

With water purification, I was told that a very small amount of Potassium Permanganate in the water ( until very slightly pink) kills off residual threats rather like chlorine tablets but without the taste. Is that correct please?

I usually use Grayl Geopress filter and honestly up to now nothing has beaten that method yet. I do have my water pills Aquatabs, I also boil the water that I will eventually drink...one can never be too careful. And since I am not against redundancy I also have a sawyer mini water filter system and my shemagh to also filter the water direct form the creek in my Grayl Geopress container.

NZ Army Infantry use the silva 15TD compass (very similar to the Silva Ranger - with adjustable declination scale ... and they're pretty much Solider proof = a pretty solid recommendation for a reliable & tough piece of kit.

Yup, Grayl are one of the filter systems with activated carbon in the filter.

    • @PaulKirtley
      @PaulKirtley  3 года назад +4

It should be noted though, you need a new filter cartridge every 250 litres or so. And with any microfiltration system, it's still worth pre-filterning really turbid water with a filter bag or similar. With a closed system like Grayl (or the old Pre-Mac system I also really liked), you extend the life of the cartridges by putting non-turbid water through the cartridge.

Hi Paul, thanks for that, but may I just say the the word declination in this context is incorrect. Declination refers to the altitude of the sun either above or below the eath's equator and is an important element in astro navigation. What we need to consider in our corrections to a magnetic compass is, as you correctly say on occasions in your clip, magnetic variation. As a mariner of many years and a lecturer in maritime navigation, I have had to explain these variances many times. Deviation is another consideration to take into account for those that have a lot of steel/iron around the (e.g. ships!), but for the average hiker this should not be a problem. They should, however, be aware that if they have anything containing a metal element in their vicinity (binoculars, telephone boxes????) this will have an effect on their compass. If I knew how to send you a Powerpoint clip on this subject to you(modified for your audiance), I would gladly do so.
