    Dave, I was in the home improvement business for several years and I must have had the same customer that you have. I called him Never Satisfied. Either, didn't like the job I did or wanted much more than the original agreement. There must be a club where they all get together and compare notes just to see how much crap they can get away with. I'm still with you on your videos.

The office manager was the vet's wife. She got really upset when I connected my computer to the switch with a CAT5 patch cord. I tried explaining that it wouldn't make any difference, but she knew better because her husband had read some magazines. That is EXACTLY why my shop refuses all but very special cases of car audio repairs such as vintage car stereos that are hard to replace. The average car audio customer knows just enough to be dangerous, wants their errors fixed under warranty, and is usually the one breathing down my neck the hardest while his stuff is in queue for repair. Couple that with the fact that most car stuff is inexpensive enough that repair costs for all but the simplest repairs approach replacement costs and you have a perfect storm for lost profits and unsatisfied customers.

      @@dunebasher1971 then it is incumbent on the tech to give the customer a lesson on electricity insofar as it explains the situation. As in there's no way those fuses could blow unless either the outputs were shorted or the amplifier was driven too high up. Other component failure is ruled out because when reinstalled the new fuses didn't pop. That's all pretty simple.

    That coax connector is an "F" connector, commonly used with RG-59 75 ohm coax for television and FM antennas. If you replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs, you will often need to add a piece frosted or translucent white plastic as a diffuser to spread the light out.

    • @12voltvids

      I did put a diffuser and it was still too bright.

    • @BryanTorok
      @BryanTorok 6 дней назад

      @@12voltvids Wow, well it would probably be a pain, but then you need different LEDs. There are all sorts of LEDs with different brightnesses, different color bands, and different beam widths. Then, you can also use different resistors to limit current flow and regulate brightness.
      Even after looking through spec sheets for the LEDS, there would likely be a bit of trial and error to get exactly the desired result. The one up side is that if you service more of these receivers, or similar receivers, you would be able to use the knowledge on future devices.

    You need to charge by the hour rather than offer a fixed cost. Back in the late '90s early 2000s I used to build web sites on the side to supplement my income. I used to charge a fixed cost, but guess what, they always wanted that little bit more.. Also, it's obvious the blown fuses are user-error and the owner's trying to exploit your good will.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  14 дней назад

      Nobody will pay by the house. As soon as you hit 1 hour they say keep it. There is a local shop that charges 95 for everything that walks in the door and then estimates so high that nobody in their right mind will pay it. When the customer says keep it they fix and sell in their store. My clients never offer to pay up front. If I told someone they had to leave a deposit on the repair they would just leave with it. So when i get an unrepairable unit i make 0 on it. Kind of depressing. That's one of the reasons i left the business 21 years ago. I make a little doing videos and that covers my time. This video might make me 5 or 10 a month but it will do that every month for years. A video I did for the gm car secirity reset has paid for the car over the years.

    Yes, customers can be a pain in the ass and expect you to marry their device. But sometimes, like this one, easier to do what you did, replace fuses, re-install incandescents, run it for a day and send it on it's way and make them happy (or try, some are never effing happy). Wasn't a huge deal and bad reviews travel faster than good reviews. Now, if it comes back again for something totally unrelated again, not warrantied neighbor. For repeat PITA customers, I just charge more and if they stop coming, good. If they are really a PITA, I just tell them flat out. Sorry, not working on your sh*t anymore. Not everyone is malicious and most truly are clueless.

  • @garyh4458

    Why would you put the original bulbs back in for blown fuses? Are you the type of person who changes all the air filters when someone asks to inflate their tires?
    You could have spent 15 minutes to put new fuses in for free and make the customer happy instead of doing extra work that makes YOU happy. I guess I don't know the whole story but watching just this video makes you look like a crackpot. Especially the way you couldn't get the coax cable on then you start jamming it on as hard as you can then start sticking a screwdriver in the hole without even bothering to look at it to see what was going on.

      First I went and bought the incandescent bulbs for the unit. The neighbor that brought it over for his even older friend that doesn't drive looked at it in the really bright shop and asked of led would make it brighter. I said it would so he asked me to put in led so I took out the bulbs and put in a strip of led. They had hot spots as I said they would. First thing the guy that brought it to me said when he saw the led's was that they were different color temperature and there were hotspots as I told them that there would be. He said he would take it back to the owner to let him look at it. He blew it up and it came back. When it came back the guy that brought it back told me the owner said it was now too bright because in a dark room he could see the entire display glowing instead of just the digits because the backlights were so much brighter than incandescent, so they went back in. This time I turned out the lights so he could see that the display was very readable.

      At work we charge 150.00 to go out and change a battery in a security system or program a remote for a customer. 50 bucks is nothing. I had to drive 30 miles each way to buy the light bulbs. A pack of 8 cost 15.00 and i used 3 on this. 50 bucks doesn't even begin to cover my time and expenses to get the light bulbs Sure I could have ordered them add 10 for shipping. Time for you to have a reality check on what stuff costs. I had to bring a guy out to change the spring on my garage door. 275 plus tax and it took him all of 15 minutes to change.

    • @dashcamandy2242
      @dashcamandy2242 13 дней назад

      @@12voltvids I don't think you're charging excessively.
      I know I've been out of school for a while, but I'm still fairly capable of solving mathematical equations:
      If we assume your vehicle gets 30 mpg (a very generous value) and you're paying the national average of $3.67 for gas, the parts run alone cost you $22.34 in fuel and bulbs (for simplicity's sake, we'll omit wear-and-tear, registration, insurance, and other business expenses from the discussion).
      Charging $50 for the bulb replacement service means you only made $27.66 on the job. So that $27.66 gets divided between the hour's drive for the bulbs (assuming a constant speed of 60 mph and zero time spent in the transaction acquiring the bulbs) AND the time actually spent on the repair. If I "optimistically guesstimate" an hour's labor, you worked a total of two hours on this unit for $13.83/hr, which is less than many US states' minimum hourly wages for selling coffee and donuts. This calculation, of course, is to give the "best-case-scenario" result.
      If I was quoted $50 to change bulbs in a receiver's display with OEM, or as-close-as-the-tech-can-get bulbs, I'd jump at the chance. Sure, I could do it myself (and I have done it myself in the past), but a price of $50 would be worth it to me to have someone else deal with the inconvenience and time spent sourcing the proper components and replacing them. Definitely a more-than-reasonable price in my opinion; even if you had all the bulbs in-stock, the price is certainly reasonable for the labor involved in most receivers' front panel assemblies!
      Skilled labor isn't cheap, and cheap labor isn't skilled. 😁
