  • Will the Ferrari 499P ever race in IMSA? Besides Aston Martin who are joining in 2025, out of all the LMH manufacturers, Ferrari has the best chance of joining, and it could happen soon... In this video, I talk all about the possibilities of the prestigious Italian brand joining IMSA's GTP Class one day.

    With the fact that Ferrari have a current "customer" entry in the WEC this season. The likely hood of seeing the 499P in IMSA is possible because who knows if we will ever get another LMH in IMSA besides Aston Martin

    • @nomiguda
      @nomiguda 7 месяцев назад +11

      It has to be remembered that the "customer" entry in WEC is run by AF Corse, the factory team. They will be highly familiar with the intricacies of how to run the 499P, and have factory support. Risi have no modern prototype hybrid experience. It's a lot to ask Ferrari for one of their cars to come to IMSA and represent their brand with a team that will need factory support, and will likely not do as good a job as AF Corse can do in WEC. This is a big barrier for Risi and I personally doubt it will ever be overcome - and I say this as a lifelong fan of the Scuderia.

    • @nomiguda
      @nomiguda 7 месяцев назад +2

      And, for what it's worth, the Daytona win is the ace up Risi's sleeve. If they win the MEC on top of that I can't imagine they could do any better in Ferrari's eyes. But as Ferrari have cast so much doubt over an IMSA external effort, I remain doubtful.

    It would be cool to see Ferrari join IMSA's GTP class and if Ferrari could possibly do it with a customer entry it would also be cool for Toyota to do the same with the GR010 since at IMSA the only team representing Toyota in a way is Vasser Sullivan where as other Manufacturers are represented by various other teams at IMSA it would be cool to have the two Hypercar giants to come and battle in the states even if it means they can only do the Michelin Endurance rounds but still since both cars are very dominant when it comes to Le Mans, if they have customer entries at IMSA the cars could even take home the Triple Crown

    I certainly agree with you. Not that IMSA isn't doing great as far as grid and audience numbers are concerned, it would open up a new demographic for the championship. If one has a glance at the team uptake of the 296 GT3 from IMSA, GT World even with the NLS, its actually quite positive to believe they might have a renewed vigour in Prototype and GT racing.
    Nonetheless said demographic can be quite combativ.....I mean vehement.

  • @williamford9564

    I don't see Risi as being the team that may eventually do this. In his interview, "the financial commitment" has talked about was sponsorship from outside parties, not his own money. The team doesn't even have the funds to run a full IMSA GT schedule. If there was sponsor money out there, they would be running a full schedule already. It may be AF Corse bringing over a customer entry, financed by sponsors, not the Ferrari factory or maybe someone like Prema using a customer car to break into GTP.

    Doubt that Ferrari would be interested in a full season, but what if they 'lease' the 499P for one-off deals for specific races such as the 24H of Daytona or 12H of Sebring. But even then, I think Ferrari would be hesitant on that arrangement as well if one of the cars is rendered written off due to a crash. IMO once they've built enough 499P's they can sell the older cars to customers, which means that it's possible for 2025, but more likely it won't be until 2026 we'd see a Ferrari 499P in IMSA

    They will only enter if there is a major sponsor bankrolling the program and even then it would be a privateer run effort. Also as we have yet to see an LMH car in IMSA. their BOP might be less favorable to the Ferrari than the WEC's. On the flipside, they have the capacity to build the cars though as they are building the track day spec 499M's, surely one or two of those could be built to P spec instead as customer cars.

    Peugeot don't sell cars in Japan, still they race at Fuji speedway in the WEC. Also, Toyota is the biggest car manufacturer in the world, so I think they the capabilities to race in America. Maybe they are scared to compete with Acura, or vice versa? :)

    • @maxb148
      @maxb148 7 месяцев назад

      IMSA has a specific rule that a manufacture has to produce 2500 cars in North America to compete which Peugeot doesnt do, so thats why they dont race in IMSA. WEC has no rule about having to sell a certain number of cars they just need to be a manufacture of cars, so Peugeot not racing in IMSA is because they dont sell cars in North America not because it is pointless for them to race as they arent selling cars (if that makes sense)

      Good call. In Formula E Stellantis runs Maserati with DS powertrains. Stellantis could take the LMH Peugeot and rebrand it Maserati or Dodge or basically anything they have in portfolio in the US.

      It’s true that Stellantis has brands that sell cars in America. But I’m not sure if Stellantis would want to rebadge the 9x8, especially considering that they are focusing on the WEC with Peugeot. Reports indicated that Alfa Romeo or Dodge could rebadge the car, but those rumors have gone quiet recently…

    might be a stupid question, but do they have to built a new car or use the same car for both championships ?

    • @ivaneurope
      @ivaneurope 7 месяцев назад

      LMH and LMDh are basically competing in the same class - it's just named differently in WEC (Hypercar) and IMSA (GTP). The condition for LMH cars to compete in IMSA is to build 2500 cars per year, which right off the bat excludes the more boutique LMH brands.

    • @FormulaJonah
      @FormulaJonah  7 месяцев назад

      It would likely be a new car for Ferrari! For instance, Porsche has 2 sets of Penske cars competing in both championships. If they had the same car chassis competing in both championships simultaneously, brands like Ferrari or Porsche for example would have to miss events in either WEC or IMSA, plus it would be a pain for teams to change the BOP consistently.
      I hope this answers your question!

      no,they just see the WEC as the priority in endurance racing then if there's possibility they would do IMSA too, to add IMSA is national WEC is international

      @joaquingonzalez834 7 месяцев назад

      glickenhaus and vanwall weren't good enough for WEC, let alone IMSA, and they don't produce cars anyway, so what are the chances?
      peugeot doesn't sell cars in the US, once again we can rule them out
      toyota are too busy screwing around in WEC, after all they've been there for a while now
      isotta fraschini is yet to actually prove their worth, but not that they'd run on GTP anyway, would they?
      that leaves us with aston martin and ferrari, while the former is guaranteed to run on GTP and Hypercar, ferrari is still considering their entry

      If you are talking about the likes of Glickenhaus, Vanwall and Isotta, they dont meet the requirements of producing/selling 2500 cars in North America so arent able to race in IMSA. Glickenhaus did want to race in IMSA as it would have been alot cheaper than in WEC but they couldnt.
