- My tailgate would not open fully without hitting the head to my power tongue jack so I rotated it 90 degrees.

Worked perfect on our 2023 International. Life is so much better when you can drop the tailgate when connected!
I couldn’t open the lift gate on my Cayenne. Facebook AS Addicts member pointed me to your video. It worked! Thanks!!
I padded the screw using the fuzzy half of 'Industrial Velcro'. It came in silver which was a bonus.
that works too! Thanks for the comments and tips!
Thanks for the video. I have a different model but am going to try and tackle it tomorrow. We will be camping in 7 cities over 9 days all on generator so I will need the tailgate down quite a bit during that time.
Good luck...seems like there are a few jacks that folks have trouble rotating. Let us know how it goes and have fun on your trip!
I used to have a Barker Superjack on my Airstream which is the previous model to yours. My Tundra tailgate cleared it using an Equalizer hitch. The Barker failed so I looked around for a new jack. Clearance to the propane tank cover was first priority. Ended up with an Atwood 4K jack similar to what Airstream uses now. Luckily the propane cover fits and the tailgate of my 2015 Ram 2500 clears too with the same hitch. However the truck has to be fairly straight for the tailgate to clear.
I actually was googling to figure out if there was any gadgets to keep chains and trailer cable off of ground while towing (I used a bungee cord now) and saw a picture with the jack turned sideways and I went hmmm. I am glad you were able to do it too. Trying to lift a 50 gallon full cooler into the truck was when I first discovered that my tailgate would not open all the way - and not until the second year of ownership. Up until this mod we loaded the cooler while it is already in truck..which was a pain too.
I had mine turned to mount a flag pole holder. I too padded that bolt head, but after miles of travel, it wore through the padding and put a nice round dimple in the bottle cover.
You have no idea what a PITA it's been lifting 3 big dogs into the bed of my truck with a tailgate that only opens halfway. I need about 1 more inch of clearance. I cant thank you enough!!! I'm doing that tomorrow.
bgdog1960 I am happy to help...it is pretty easy. Thanks for watching!
Any tips on rotating the head with a SP3500 jack? There are no set screws. Thanks!
Rick Mansfield I am not familiar with that model. Good Luck!
You didn't mention the brand. Not all jacks can rotate the head. Plan B is to drill new holes in the flange at the bottom. You'll be 30 degrees away from the existing holes. (Holes are 120 deg apart, three bolts, - 90 degree shift = 30 deg new holes.) I drilled 1/2" holes to allow a little wiggle room. Use a long bit, put the tongue on jack stands.
It is the stock jack that came on our Airstream - if you would like to know what model it is let me know.
if you turn it the other way the light is still useful campside
That is a great idea and should not be any reason it can't be done to that side either. Thanks for the tip!
Thanks! I know what i am doing tonight!
in reality once you have the tools in hand it takes less than a minute - you are welcome and please subscribe if you have not already
What model jack is that? Couldn’t find it in the description
It is a Barker High-Power 3000 Acme Jack according to the manual (I have them all on my phone) but I am not home right now to give you any more info.
Confirmed it is the Barker Levelrite HI-Power 3000
@@AirstreamNerds thank you
What brand of tongue jack do you have on the air stream?
it is what came with the camper from Airstream - Barker Levelrite HI-Power 3000
@@AirstreamNerds thank you!
Cool video
thanks
Why couldn't you just rotate the jack by removing the 3 bolts that bolts it to the trailer frame and mount it sideways?
You could do that but you would then have to support the tongue a different way while you worked. With this method you do not have to do that. Thanks for the comment
@@AirstreamNerds thanks! I will do that the next time the trailer is hooked up to the truck. Appreciate the response!
Jake Dupont BTW you don't have to have it connected to your truck unless you are going to use the three bolts method your first described
Tried that. Once you rotate the whole jack, only 2 bolt holes line up. That is, for you geometry folks, the bolt holes do not make the points of an equilateral triangle. Furthermore, to get those two holes lined up, the head has to be turned more than 90 degrees, making it impossible to get the propane tank covers back on.
Robert DeBlanc thank you for your input...it is so much easier to just rotate the head anyway that I did not even consider the bolt option
