    If you stack them on top of each other, have the binding on opposite sides by having every other comic upside down. This prevents warping of the comics

    Lonnie, I noticed some of the listings have NM and Fine grades on the books. Comic book buyers are persnickety (and I am being kind) when it comes to condition. Generally speaking, that type of grading is an affirmative statement of the grade and backs you into corners if you miss something. If it is super clean and really clear, you can say things like "high grade", but if you say NM then you can't say "I am not an expert in comics". I have been doing this for a while and people fight me over grades all the time. The best thing is to say High Grade if they are and if not, just put down the flaws in the description (e.g., spine ticks, corner deflections, creases, etc.). Even with experience grading is a minefield.

      I've sold a lot of valuable pokemon cards and it's pretty much the same thing. Always a good rule of thumb to be as transparent as can be in your listing. I also mention in all my card listings that you can always request another picture of a specific angle or portion of the card on all my high dollar items.

      The comic folks are picky because a grade of a 9.0 dropping to a 8.5 can be the difference of tens of thousands of dollars in value.
      It’s crazy.

    One more thing about grading. When you put VF or NM in the title, the buyer probably will expect to receive the comic in that condition. You’re using the best mailer, which is great. I recommend attaching the comics Mylar to the mailer, so it doesn’t shift. Geminis do skew, so by using painters tape to secure it to the side panels, you’re increasing the chance of getting the comic to the buyer in the grade you’ve dictated. (Painters tape doesn’t ruin the Mylar or poly.

    I cringed when I watched you taking the comics out of the bag leaving the scotch tape on the flap. Just remove the tape and stick to side of comic bag before you remove and replace it after comic is safely back inside bag. Okay, I won't warn you again! :-) Good luck!!

    That comic price guide is just that a guide, a lot of books get hot quickly based on speculation and the price guide does not factor that in till its to late to adjust pricing. And some books your selling will not fetch the price your looking for. A book is only worth what someone will pay for it.

  • @acesontilt77
    @acesontilt77 3 года назад +3

    From a full time comic and card seller here is some helpful tips. Shipping in the gemini mailers is great but shipping media mail is BY FAR a much better way to sell them. I have heard both sides of media mail vs first class and selling comics that are $50 and under gets MM over gets 1st class. Second SCANNING does NOT get a buyer all the info they need. They want page quality and pics in reflected light to see spine tics folds color breaks etc. You need to list them with nots like White pages or white /offwhite Cream / yellow etc etc. Get a page color chart to help you see what is what. Front and back pics are NOT enough to make an educated buy. I know you probably comp off last solds on ebay but the prices range soo much because of condition you really need to learn how to properly grade a book before you put it up for sale.

    • @DeusExAstra
      @DeusExAstra 10 месяцев назад

      This is good advice. I would likely not buy a comic with just scans of the front and back. Having photos with reflected light on the front and back and photos of the inside are really useful for instilling confidence in what you're buying. Descriptions are often wrong or misleading.

  • @CapedGeekMarcel
    @CapedGeekMarcel 3 года назад +13

    As others have mentioned: it is super important that in your description you mention you are not a grading expert. Grading involves looking at every page, and takes a lot of unbiased experience. Be very careful on how you’re picking the comic up off the scanner bed, you don’t want to introduce flaws after the scans. If a comic is $100+ think about using white gloves. The pricing tool is good, but remember that’s the high price they’re showing.

    • @morrisc4624
      @morrisc4624 3 года назад +1

      As buyer of comics... would you like pictures of the comic? or a Scan? I feel like a scan makes a better "picture" for the thumbnail... but a variety of pictures of edges / corners might be better. What ya think.

    • @CapedGeekMarcel
      @CapedGeekMarcel 3 года назад +2

      @@morrisc4624 if it’s a comic I’m collecting, I want it out of the Mylar or Poly as little as possible, handled as little as possible. I think close up camera shots of corners and spine is industry standard for a reason. It’s nice to see the back because certain ads are rare/valuable. If I can’t see the back because it stays in plastic, so be it. To be completely honest scanning a raw comic is way too much handling for me. That being said, I know collectors who will never bag and board there comics. Everyone prefers something different.

    I would use the even-number grades 2-8 (GD, VG, FN, VF) only until you become an expert at grading. Avoid NM to begin with. If the comic is really NM and you described it as VF, you will have a delighted customer. If you do it the other way, you will have a disappointed or angry customer. You can still price it as NM and let the pictures sell it.

    I started selling using a scanner. Eventually moved to taking pictures. Most importantly I use excel to create the listings in a CSV file in bulk. If I have runs of the same title - especially with consecutive issue numbers I've been able to list several hundred individual comics in a day using a bulk upload tool like Turbo lister that allows you to import using a CSV file. Grading is still time consuming and key to listing comics in bulk. If 90% of your comics are VF that makes it ideal rather than conditions that are all over the map. 99% of the comics I've ever sold (about 30,000 through eBay) were with actual photos of the comics. Each comic has a unique SKU# which are consecutive to the SKU # not the comic title or issue #. That has also been a time saver over other methods I've used over the years.

    If your steps never review the interiors, you may miss coupon cut outs, writing or page damage\staple rust. Coupon cutout were quite often in old comics and will make a NM exterior go completely to a GD comic. Interiors page color can also quickly change grades (there is a white page index to use from Overstreet Price Guides). Also, check for smells is required as mildew or smoke damage lowers grades. And also make sure all the pages are there... Some center fold page(s) could have fallen out and look perfectly fine, but really they are gone. To inspect these possible problems on older comics, never fully open the comic.

    • @TopherPettitGaming
      @TopherPettitGaming 3 года назад +1

      And I would also say... When researching a book, if there is a key in the issue... Like first appearance or major event... you will want to add that to the listing title... but you will want to review ebay listings. Like if you have the 1st of some villain, example Kang (in Avengers #7), that price guide will be wrong because that character has been announced in Marvel movie the guide will say $100 but now it's $500 on ebay sales the day after and maybe go higher if the character is praised in the show.

    7:11 you almost introduced a spin tick here. I would use a backing board to lay it on the scanner and then remove the backing board. Then slide the backing board back under the spine to pick it up. Use another backing board on the opposite side, flip it over and then put it back on the scanner. Always keep the spine towards you. This is how pressers flip books over.

    Nice vid and system you have going on to list your comics. I do agree with having some sort of disclaimer to have the viewer judge for themselves regarding the condition. I don't sell comics but I do sell records and I always state that 'I'm not a record grader' and I try to only give my opinion of the condition and not use the typical grading terms - such as mint, near mint, etc. I'm always concerned that if I list something as 'mint' without professional grading, I could get a lot of negative feedback or returns. As always, great vid and good luck on this new venture in selling comics.

    One thing you might want to consider is that iPhones have a scan feature in the notes app. I think you said before that you send pics from your phone to your computer over wifi (forget what it’s called-airdrop maybe?) but this would be instant.
    Might want to try that and time yourself and see if it helps. I think it will.

    I sold comics, a lot, in late 1990s to mid 2000s. Had a store in 1980s plus collected in 1970s and early 1980s. .Scanned like you are doing but occasionally shot camera pictures on expensive comic books. Had few issues selling as usually undergraded comic books. I would never have graded any that you showed as Fine as " Fine" condition but I have noticed CGC doesnt grade as strict as I did either. Expensive books require more details. I had so many I usually grouped lower valued comics less than $15 value. A lot more tools available now. I may try my hand again to move some of my stash! I know this video is 2 years old but I'm going to comment anyway lol...I sell primarily comics on ebay (thousands a year). I've considered a fast scanner for low dollar books but I still use a digital camera. The main reason is that non-color-breaking defects aren't captured by scanners. You have to take pictures at an angle in the light to show some defects, and that's important for accurate condition data. Many VF books can easily look NM in a scanner. Comics will still sell without extra photos, but you may get more returns or poor feedback. Also, if you state a condition be sure you can estimate well against industry standards. I go at or beneath best estimate, to be safe. At the high end, slabbed 9.8's are often 2x 9.6's, and there's very little difference (sometimes none, as 9.6's sometimes come back 9.8 when resubmitting, or vice versa). 38 minutes for 40 scanned photos is also too slow if you're listing a lot daily. I take around 200-300 photos in an hour, and that includes some bagging. On the other hand, mycomicshop seems to use scanners, but they probably have some super fast ones that cost 10k or something lol

Also, I noticed you have a number of those "Marvel Comics Group; Marvel's Greatest Comics." Those are mostly, if not all "reprints". Scanning picks up more then the human eye can see and may cause problems. People might see something in the scan that they will not be able to see when it is in their hands and cause loss of sales. Best way is to take pictures: Front Cover, Back Cover, All four corners of front, All four corners of back, middle of book and one of the spine.
    Also, I don't quote grades on the comics and let them speak for themselves. Less chance of someone unhappy with a grade you quoted and them disagreeing. Time loss dealing with people who are not happy is a major time suck!

I knew you would most likely have no problem selling them with just the cover photos, however you might still want to consider the centerfold picture. I know that it will add to your time, yes, but you did ask. A book you might want to consider is "The Overstreet Guide To Grading Comics". It is different from the regular price guide because it is devoted to helping you learn to grade comics with each grade listed, what is allowed in that grade, and pictures of comics that have been graded accordingly. I've spend 15 minutes researching a book before because it was so obscure and just nowhere to be found, etc. If I had a stack of 20 that were easy to find and all just cover A first print marvel comics I'd probably be at about an hour, Only because I do it on my phone, listing and photos all very fast. Maybe quicker if I stole other peoples listings. (Not to gloat) I just prefer the speedy process, Listing on a desktop really slows down my groove haha. Looks like you'll kill it on those comics man. Most of mine I had to lot up. Oh and also.. If it looks really nice, I always just say "NM Or Better" and if it looks questionable, I just don't put a grading, I just say judge for yourself. Even when I say NM or better I also say, But I'm no pro so judge for yourself. haha. I don't want a return because they disagree with me.

    I know that comic people are VERY particular about the condition. I hesitate to buy because I just don't know enough about them.

    I really enjoyed watching this. I just bought a huge collection of Comics. I know nothing about them at all. Been putting off listing them. Can't say no to a good deal. 🤷
    Thanks Lonnie!
