I saw it today, and it was..."a whole vibe." Chillest movie of all time. It felt relatable, and yet something to aspire to. ...It made me feel like solitude is a perfectly viable path in life, and that there's nobility in simply providing for one's self and providing a service to society. It's okay to exist, and to sit & notice and to absorb, to breathe and go about your way.
I am unsure whether I'd describe the film as "chill". There is profound wisdom here. While Hirayama is so content as a toilet cleaner, he can still yearn for fun and companionship. Perfect Days shares with us the perfection of our present surroundings, but teaches us to not neglect the imperfections either. Take a day off work, smile at a stranger, visit your father, dance with a stranger. There is beauty in it all, embrace this and live presently, your perfect days will be endless.....

waited to watch a movie of a toilet cleaner meanwhile you frowned at a toilet cleaner in real life, as long as it's on a screen for you you'll clap and smile along!
The scene with his sister was SO well written and acted.... With the minimum of lines and the incredible facial expressions, we could understand what he had escaped from, what he was never returning to, why he and his sister were different, what the relationship with his father was, how his sister perceived him (with a complex mixture of envy, disdain, sorrow, regret, and more...). Just amazing.
The production cost is said to be $14 million. Unlike the theme of the movie, a considerable amount of production cost was used. Where was the production cost spent?? I wonder.
@@anm8001 I know that Minari was set at $2 million. The production cost of Talk To Me was $4.5 million, and in any case, I think it was too expensive compared to the movie content. It seems like the director's guarantee is big, but it's too expensive and doesn't fit the theme of the movie. and Production costs for Japanese films of this scale are not this high. $5 million at most.
His days were indeed perfect, colors, music, work, sauna, photography and cassette tapes brought extra joy to this daily routine. This is another great example of celebration of life in Japan, a country with one of the highest qualities of life in the world and yet many sadnesses and stresses created by people's thoughful minds. "Drive my car" and "Broker" are another amazing celebrations of life in Japanese cinema, with "Broker" being a South Korean film written, edited and directed by Japanese filmmaker.
Who knew watching a toilet cleaner's everyday life would be therapeutic. It was like being there, enjoying the simple things in life like eating at the park. I watched this at home and it gave me that "cozy" feeling. Plus, those public facilities are a work of art! We don't have those in our country as far as I know. My favorite is the one that turns opaque and transparent.
I've seen this movie at least 10 times now thanks to AppleTV and trust me the ASMR is the best thing about this movie. I've never had a movie that's worth so much meaning and simplicity that it became like white noise to me at this point when I go to sleep.
10 times? I was thinking, as I watched this. "I could get more out of watching this [and movies like it] over and over than I could watching the news every day." Maybe I'll do what you did.
I purchased this film this morning and watched it immediately. Men, I think this seems to be my best movie this year. It touched a lot with fantastic Koji Yakusho san no performance, solid plot, excellent music scores, and stunning cinematography. A great actor starts acting in other people’s lives but finally becomes themselves in their ripest days.
I watched this today on my flight … it’s one of those gems that will be seen by everyone in due course … just like how the movie moves at its own pace in its own vibe … it will reach everyone whom it needs to reach in its own time … and people of heart will see it, will smile and cry at the same time (like me) what a beautiful movie!!!

Yup. This is the moral of this movie and it goes over the head of 95% of the audience. After the scene with his sister, you begin to piece together that this is a very educated man from a well to do family who is now cleaning toilets with a special needs teenager. Clearly, he did something very very wrong. I believe the relevance of the tree was that he HADN’T SEEN one while in prison.

An achingly, profoundly beautiful film. Wife and I just watched it for the first time a few days ago, and it still haunts both of us. And my god, Koji Yakusho has become one of my favorite actors now ,on this film alone. Just the deep emotion he conveys through his facial expression alone are exquisite to watch. A real master.
the ending of the movie, how he was smiling and holding tears in the same time, i feel like the main character feels the solitude, but in the same time he wants to forget about it by smiling and enjoying the little things about his life, bcs if he didn't he would be sad.. and the scene when he cried after his sister and her daughter left, it showed how he was most happy when she was with him
I felt it was about his new beginning, the guy told him to look after his ex wife, he kind of knew there would be a new start, he realised how lonely he had been and missed his family. So he was happy and sad at the same time
The sister scene just took your heart and wrung it out like a dish cloth. It was beautiful. The final scene went on a little too long but it made the point.

Love this movie. Saw it twice in two days. I wasn't familiar with the short story referenced in the movie by the main character's niece, so looked it up and went back to rewatch the film. Let me tell you, knowing the plot of the short story "Terrapin" adds great weight to not only the niece's storyline, but also the main character's back story as well. It's quite easy to see why he may have isolated himself the way he did.
Interesting. I meant to look up why Niko wanted to be like Victor but I forgot until reading your comment. That makes a lot more sense. Thank you for sharing.
A very great film coming out of Japan. Perfect Days shows us a view of life into the underappreciated in our society. It's a story of finding happiness despite our roles in life, and about the day-to-day connections we have.
It's a sad and cold story about an Americanised and globalised world (city) full of estranged, alienated people. It's a docufilm about dying authentic Japanese culture. There is nothing "great" about it.

I loved this movie. At first, after seeing the trailer, I was startled by the absence of dialog thru much of the film but then I got into it. A beautiful story and lesson
The fact itself that a group of people have coalesced, brought a german man to Tokyo, asked him to tell a story about the city toilets and made you cry throught it tells something about the human species.
Brilliant summary, isn't it ironic? I have another one which imho fits beautifully with yours. A group coalesced, brought some random skinny roman woman to Sardinia asked her to tell a story about a castaway fisherman and a middle aged rich bimbo.
This masterpiece deserves more public love and also atleast best picture nomination. This and 'all of us strangers' are my movies of the year 2023. The iron.claw comes close third. I am Amazed to see these 3 movies barely crossed 20 mill box office, whereas as shit like 'anyone but you' had more than 200 Mills just cuz of boobage.
For people who enjoyed watching this beautiful, soothing movie, and are looking for something as peaceful to watch, i recommend checking out Paterson, and Columbus, i watched both of them before watching Perfect days, and watching it made me remember how much i enjoyed them.

I saw this amazing film today, one that I have been looking forward to. So moving, original and thought provoking.
Very calming
Me too. I haven’t seen iron claw
I miss tokyo, my home town.
For people who enjoyed watching this beautiful, soothing movie, and are looking for something as peaceful to watch, i recommend checking out Paterson, and Columbus, i watched both of them before watching Perfect days, and watching it made me remember how much i enjoyed them.
just the trailer made me cry
