The problem isn't the tv ratings. The problem is the writing. I've said this for a while. At this point we have no idea what ideas are Vinces, and what ideas are the writers, and that's a bad thing. Vince needs to be taken off creative for a couple months so we can determine whether or not its the writers fault the product sucks, or his. We know that he has been rewriting the show as its going on, so until that stops, its going to be the same, regardless of tv rating.

Move to 2 hours and end the brand split. Shit can the dumb ass gimmick wrestlers and focus on storylines that are more serious and mean something as far as their titles are concerned which should lead to better matches that people actually care about. Right now it’s wwe with bad creative and AEW with good wrestling and guess what nobody besides the hardcore fans give a shit. Now combine good stories with good wrestling and characters/wrestlers people can get invested in and bam you have a better show.

When I was a kid PG meant nudity, violence, and swearing. Look at PG movies from the early 80's. There was G, PG, and R which was 18+ and even then I never had an issue renting R rated films as a preteen/teen. It was only X rated movies they cared if you were 18. Seriously people went stupid with ratings for movies, TV, video games and it lead to people getting more and more offended until we got this stupid cancel culture. Glad South Park is immune to it but even comedians aren't allowed to joke anymore without getting attacked. * And music ratings too, when I was like 11-13 we were listening to 2 Live Crew. If you are a youngster and don't know them you should check a few tunes out. For the time they were considered explicit but now they're probably not so much.

Solomonster mentioned WWE is doing this due to competition. I believe and agree with that. I think they're also doing this because they raised a generation of children/kids who are now teens and young adults. They did this with us in the 90s and early 00s where we had the first PG Era (known as the "Golden Era" and "The New Generation" eras) and then after we grew up from our childhood, they gave us the Attitude Era.

A perfect example of a mature rating not always being the solution is Ren and Stimpy. Going from a Nickelodeon show to a Spike TV didn’t work out. Or even Family Guy(still a TV-14 show to this day) but it has less restrictions but it hasn’t made the show better

Having watched WWF in the eighties, I also thought it was silly that we have this PG Era despite the fact the company was PG for many years in the past and the shows were great at the time. The issue is not the PG rating, but that the quality overall is no longer there. There is no one in the roster who is not Roman I can get behind, and the booking is garbage. Till I see a real fix that makes watching WWE great again, I have other things to do.

Yeah when I heard the news it didn’t excite me to start watching WWE again at all. People act like the company was that way the entire time. If we had ratings in the 80s and the first half of the 90s it would still be PG television but it was great television. People using more swearwords and girls walking out in bikinis and people flipping the bird isn’t really what made the attitude era great. It helped decorated some but the attitude era for the most part was made up of people that knew the pro wrestling business. They had been in a while a lot of them had worked smaller territories and really new wrestling psychology they knew what worked and what didn’t work and the ones that didn’t got to work with those guys so the knowledge was still passed on. It’s still going to be scripted and you’re not going to have any big breakout stores like Austin or The Rock , It’s going to be the same crappy television with more curse words and women walking out and thongs and that’s really going to be the difference.

I think what Solomonster is missing is that fans want a more mature setting regardless of language, blood, violence exc... and that goes beyond the TV-14 stuff true, but changing the rating to cather to a more adult audience is a welcome sign. I think the decline for WWE happened when Lesnar left the 1st time and they turned to John Cena to be the next big thing and they turned him into a comic book superhero, something that has alienated a massive chunk of the audience. That happened before the PG Era but that was also a clear sign of the changing of the guard in regard of which kind of audience WWE was trying to capture because while the adults were booing Cena off buildings, the kids loved him and that's probably the demo that is still watching WWE today. So many people identified the PG rating as the reason why WWE became a watered down product and now they hope for a change but I agree that creative minds are the only solution to make Wrestling great again

I have been in the mindset for years that TV-14 is not the end all, be all solution for WWE programming.
Outside of the usual complaints about the current product (writing, booking, 3-hours too long) I pose a question:
What exactly is the theme for Monday Night RAW and Friday Night Smackdown!?
This so-called "New Era" that supposedly started in 2016, is quite indistinct compared to other so-called "periods" of this company's history.
Today's WWE has BTS/Reality Shows/Social Media as it did in the so-called "Reality Era" (2014-2016)
The heavily-scripted promo(s) and watered down violence of the "PG Era" (2008-2014) continue to be presented in today's product (despite the impending TV-14 rating).
When WWE occasionally tries (and that is few and far between), the wrestling is up to or near the quality to what we saw during "The Ruthless Aggression Era" (2002-2008).
Of course, today's WWE can never truly return to "The Attitude Era" (Late 1996- Early 2001) due to changing social norms (PC) and censorship(s) (and yes, as much as I was/am a fan that grew up during this time period, several storylines in hindsight were of bad taste and should be left in the past).
Also, today's WWE is deficient of a top-tier, larger-than-life, star-studded roster that christened "The Golden Age" (1984-1993).
In a roundabout way, this era is undefinable, dare I say rudderless.
To me, this period has been a more lackluster version of the lackluster "New Generation Era" (Early 1993- Early 1996) with rehashes of all other eras mixed in (excluding, of course, much of "The Attitude Era").
There needs to be a driving theme to these shows so that everything will feel important again.
I want another Year 1997 where everyone is pissed off at each other and will compete, scratch, claw, and/or do anything to claim THE TITLE (Just the main title with the IC Title as secondary; Same for the Women's Division; Tag Titles the last tier). That year made some compelling television and it gestated for the ensuing years a bold and fresh direction. I want to see it happen again.
Of course, Vince and his band of writers and execs , (yes-men) will still be there, meaning nothing will change in the foreseeable future (unless scandal that may possibly oust Vince and said writers and execs notwithstanding).

I just want to add something that Solomonster somewhat iterated, but never mentioned directly. WWE is in a state where there are habits that they continue to do regardless of what the rating is. They could make an announcement tomorrow that they're going TV-MA, but guess what? We're still going to have countless rematches and a depleted tag team division that should've been solved beforehand. We're still going to have the shaky cam and 34839 camera cuts. The tired "superstar interrupts other superstar during a promo, so let's make a match out of it" schtick that's been used since 1999. All of this is staying, and will continue to stay so long as Vince and his vision are still around.
Oh...and a side note: Anyone remember the Smackdown episode from 8-14-2020? Wouldn't be surprised if people said no, but it was actually one of the few Smackdowns that was rated TV-14 during the live broadcast. It's pretty indicative of what WWE's iteration of TV-14 can be once they make the change. August 2020 isn't too far off the radar to how they're doing things now, minus the Covid crowd, yet equally as forgettable.

I mean during 2002-2005, Trish Stratus, Lita, Victoria, Molly Holly et al were part of dozens of bikini contests during the shows but was able to turn right around and have very compelling matches and segments, often during the very same show.
So WWE should bring back the T&A segments for the chicks just to give them some range. Nothing wrong with flaunting sex appeal as long as those who are flaunting sex appeal are also taken seriously.

Let me get this straight: WWE is changing its viewership rating after 15+ years of being a PG era. When in actuality, the viewership wasn't the problem, it's the product - itself!

    It doesnt mean anything because....
*1.* It still the same booking as it once was once before turn tv 14.
*2.* Triple H prove that they didnt need to go hardcore of edgey just good wrestling, good characters and good storylines is all you need in a good wrestling show...Triple H NXT was the closest we got to the modern day Attitude Era.
*3.* You really think Vince would give up the family deal just for a cheap pop in ratings remember...he trolled everyone thinking he was stepping down...🎣.

I chuckled hearing Solomonster talk about that 2002 to 2004 booking they went through. I realize that TV PG or 14 really won't make much of a difference especially if people just aren't given reasons to care. If Vince actually treated the talent with any amount of respect then it wouldn't matter what the rating would be.

My compliments to Solomonster for a good critique on the claim that WWE making their content more racy will somehow miraculously save their programming. People keep forgetting that WWE has been PG for most of its near 60-year existence, going back to when Bruno Sammartino reportedly refused to drink alcohol in restaurants if there were kids around. Furthermore, ratings plummeted during the "Ruthless Aggression" era, which had plenty of blood, profanity, and erotic content. Ultimately, what matters is quality of matches and quality of storylines. And those two are not going to be suddenly improved because more people are cussing or more blood gets spilled.

  • @icantthinkofacooname3025

If WWE used blood the right way in big matches or angles it would mean something. AEW at this point is every Ric Flair match ever u know they are going to bleed for next to nothing.

WWE could be TV-G for all I care. Even if it becomes like 1990s ECW and becomes TV-MA, it won't matter. The product will still be Milk Toast Stale.
Wrestling shows need three things in order to truly entertain their audience: Larger than Life (OR relatable) characters, captivating storytelling that gets fans emotionally invested, and unpredictability (OR "feel good" predictability, like Danielson winning the unified title at Mania 30 and Kofi winning the title at Mania 35).
Over the last decade or so, WWE has only shown very small doses of just ONE of these three. One of the reasons why fans enjoy the Monday Night Wars so much was NOT because of how violent it was. It was because WWE, WCW, AND ECW provided all three of those above traits in spades.
The sad truth is that WWE doesn't NEED to provide ANY of these above traits since they have PROVED that they don't need to make their audience happy. They don't NEED to put asses in seats. Wasn't like that 20-25 years ago.

  • @PuroresuFan
    @PuroresuFan 2 года назад +1

Another example of a TV rating not really meaning much to the quality of a wrestling program, is the existence of WCW Monday Nitro from 1995-2001. During the entirety of the NWO storyline and their subsequent peak, the show was PG. The PG rating played no factor in the compelling television fans saw on that show every single week. Then came late 1999/all of 2000 in the Russo era where Nitro was TV-14 and the show was an absolute trainwreck.
So the rating doesn't play a factor in how good a show is. It all comes down to creative. And it always will

WWE were going to go PG long before the Benoit incident, Mattel deal, Linda McMahon campaign etc. Once they became a publicly traded company in the early 2000’s they were going to that route slowly but surely. If AEW were to get as big or even half as big as WWE and becomes a PTC then they will eventually go PG, something to think about.

Even though the WWE still has other things to fix, TV-14 coming back is still beneficial, which means the wrestlers can now be themselves, they can say what they want do what they want and behave how they want and not get punished for it anymore, it also means we can have lots of blood in matches now, we can also have hard-core matches again like in the attitude era and ruthless aggression era, and we can finally have hot sexy diva action, it will also give the creative team the freedom once again to actually be creative and make the storylines edgy like they used to be during attitude and ruthless aggression.

People make WAY to much of the PG/TV-14 thing IMHO. Even at the height of the Attitude Era it was only Raw and the PPV's that were TV-14 and most of WWE's programming was always TV-PG, and even with the higher rating it was always a minority of content that pushed things to that level. WWE's never going to be "edgy" again, they barely got away with some of that stuff back then and lost sponsors, partners etc. That tasteless stuff would never fly in today's world. People need to let that one go.
