    This is the best explanation of this topic that I've heard. We have absolutely noticed this when we've visited there. Thanks for an excellent summary of this huge social difference between France and (especially) the USA, where we see people who drive cars worth nearly more than their home, so they *appear* rich...

    Before the Revolution, the rich, especially the nobles, treated the majority of French people with utter contempt, as if they were subhuman. They were called filthy dogs, expected to yield the right of way to the rich, taking the mud splashed up from the streets, etc. They killed, raped and injured the lower classes with almost complete immunity in practice, if not in law. The nobles, the majority of the rich, didn’t have to pay any taxes. Funding all the operations of the state and the fancy lifestyles of the royals and nobles was entirely on the backs of the poorest, the peasants! I think this accounts, partially, for the popular anger in the Terror that reigned so long during the Revolution. Partly, it was just the thrill of power to men like Robespierre.

    It’s not “money is the root of all evil”, the actual quote was “the love of money is the root for of all evil”. Money is just a thing, but it’s now necessary for survival, it’s the excessive, overwhelming desire for more and more money, even at the expense of others’ rights, that causes the trouble.

    Here’s another perspective: France’s top rate of tax is 60%. They also use the single currency (Euro). Compare this with your neighbouring country - the United Kingdom (where I live), a country that is about the same size and population as France. We use Pound Sterling as our currency, one of the strongest currencies in the world (worth more than Euros, USD etc). Our top rate of tax is 40%, although most people pay 19% (if self-employed) or 20% (most people that are employed through a company). Self-employed businesses pay 60% tax in France. In the UK it’s 19% because the UK government wants to encourage innovation. We’re not as financially divided as France. Yes there are issues (like everywhere in the world), but when it comes to £££, it’s not one of them! The British mentality towards money is drastically different. Walk down any big UK city, most people are in designer bags (Chanel etc) and driving expensive cars (BMW, Mercedes etc). I’d rather live here with my bad weather, earn 41% more than my neighbouring counterparts, then use the £££ to buy cheap property in France, Spain or Italy and enjoy life there. That’s what most people do in the UK. South of France for example has a large number of British people living there.

    There is a love/hate attitude toward money in the USA, I believe. I was raised Catholic and that ethic or morality is accurate -- humility, humbleness, charity, etc., are valued theoretically in Catholicism (minus the Vatican, notably). Here, it is also considered vulgar to talk about money, salary, etc., and to be openly extravagant, hence the quiet luxury movement, right? I personally like the model of Denmark, in which people live a comfortable middle class life with a nice, small home, a bicycle, a garden, and a robust community center or square. Putting a floor under people and having a ceiling makes sense to me.

    • @Aliceinparisofficial
      @Aliceinparisofficial  Год назад +5

      Quiet luxury is not new I believe it was and still the style of extremely wealthy people. I am French and the one thing I don’t like is this average French mentality towards wealth and success. I don’t like the new rich either but constantly criticizing people who work hard and want to make it is not good. The Denmark model also makes sense to me

    • @LizLyonsPhD
      @LizLyonsPhD Год назад +1

      @@Aliceinparisofficial Well, given the fact that it seems things we all want now are extremely expensive (clothes, cars, meals out, vacations, homes, university, etc.) it only makes sense that people want to and need to work hard in order to afford what used to be accessible to the average person. It is a dilemma, because you need some drive and ambition to get to the point where these are affordable and that drive takes on a life of its own and sometimes becomes the goal instead of the means.

    This is a great video, well explained. I have a question: how does the "anti-rich" ethos compare with what I now understand to be the cornerstone of French chic: a curated wardrobe of best quality items you can afford? I notice that French women (men too I imagine) wear clothes of a higher standard than Ireland for example. These cost more than disposable fashion from cheap high street brands. Any thoughts?

    • @alisatian
      @alisatian Год назад +7

      I also find this interesting. The so-called old money or quiet luxury trend is not something average income earners with rent or mortgage can afford as a lifestyle choice, not to mention loud luxury goods like Chanel and Hermes. If ‘talking rich’ is a taboo, why is ‘looking rich’ or ‘feeling rich’ ok?

    • @TinaB.-fr1hl
      @TinaB.-fr1hl Год назад +5

      This is just my opinion, because I've also noticed this seeming contradiction. But On further thought, I think it id about an appreciation of quality goods, that can last, maybe even for generations. So the love of chanel and Hermes is probably about that and also the tradition of it, not so much the appearance of it.
      I'm glad you pointed that out.

    I understand the French disdain for the wealthy for all the reasons you mentioned. Still, I cannot help but find it ironic that for a society that despises the rich, for many around the world, France, or more specifically, Paris symbolizes elegance and luxury. The French invented Haute Couture, and the French fashion industry is a major contributor to France’s GDP, generating about US $18 Billion in revenues in France annually (and contributing €217 billion to the global economy) and employing over 600,000 people in the industry. It seems a bit contradictory.

While it's true that most of the rich french people I know are beneficiaries of their family's estate but it's also true that only the people with assets can act like they don't care about money. In addition, most Canadians descended, at some point, from immigrants who were generally not the wealthiest people in their homelands and were, actually, pretty uniformly, workers of some sort. Canadians are not fond of people who have somehow gained an advantage that can make life harder for others. Wealthy people are taken as suspect, and very successful people too. They're frowned upon, criticized and resented. Our socialist lite leanings also fuel this attitude. I enjoy the fact that historically, many of our wealthiest people seemed quite down to earth. You misunderstand the Protestant religion, wealth is not a sign of salvation, holiness or being loved by God. It’s quite the opposite, it’s exactly as how the Catholics see it, in fact. Modest prosperity based on one’s own efforts is acceptable, but excess wealth must be used to help others. Strict Calvinism does believe in some outward signs, perhaps, of being “saved”, but these are entirely about one treats others, not about how one treats oneself. These things like charity, honesty, and compassion are viewed as what we receive from Christ, not what our inherent virtues are. All Protestants deny that we can be saved by the good works we do, only Catholics believe that.

    Sorry, but I think this time it shows an idealized version of French.
    France is a competitive society, so at work and in studies you compete to be the best and have the most talent. Not everyone has the same talent, but it's also absurd: even if two people have talent (which doesn't always happen) they don't have to have the same kind of talent.
    Regarding money: all of us who work in strong multinationals have French colleagues (and from other European countries,) and they work the same as everyone else: you work hard to earn more money, you change companies to earn more money and if you get paid 5000 euro you are happy Showing off is another thing, in Europe we don't like to show off wealth, it is considered in bad taste, what's more: not so many years ago the upper classes boasted of not even touching money. But have money? Well of course. And no: the French are not super special about it, they are like everyone else, you just have to see how the containers burn in France if any law touches the wallet.
    To the Americans of this channel: Europe is capitalist, social capitalism, so yes: we like to earn money. Of course: do not show off, that is low class, throughout Europe the upper classes boasted of not giving value and that has stayed with us

I charge and they charge me as they see fit, and I have a salary that I spend on whatever I want. Of course: I have the right to private property, it would be missing more. France has lots of working class and even in history communist and socialist were used interchangeably. Commun itself comes from the Paris commun. The rights of private property are hard to acquire and those french who have property have inherited. French people are earning all the same. The French market is heavily regulated I don't care what statistics show. Elimination of class distinction. Marx says give people based what they need but not what they are worth. In France a PhD and workers have minor differences in wages. There are many elements that show France is a modern Communism hidden under social democracy.
