the music was fine. a lot of times people who criticize have never made a video themselves.... it's hard to narrate or talk to a camera, music can help quite a bit.
the video was all the explanation needed, thanks for taking the time

    Hi.
We used a 40 gallon empty metal drum.
Found a safe area for a fire.
We drilled/cut several air holes in the bottom, and removed a large part of the top.
We stuffed the air holes at the bottom with lighting paper (old news paper)
Then sat the drum on 3 builders bricks.
And dug out a spit of earth, half way in under & half way out from under the drum. To allow air flow.
Inside the drum we put lighting paper and lighting wood.
We selected some of our smaller seasoned wood logs.
Inserted a fencing post temporarily into the centre of the drum, to retain air space while filling up with the logs.
We then layered the seasoned logs on top of the lighting wood. Until the drum was full. Then removed the post from the centre, and placed a metal lid on the top of the drum, which we propped up with a log on one side, to allow more air flow.
It was then set lite via the paper stuffed in the bottom holes.
And then left to burn a while, until the moisture from the logs had evaporated. The smoke seems to change from white (smoke containing moisture) to a blue smoke. (least moisture)
Obviously, All cautions need to be taken when working with fire.
The soil was then replaced under the drum, and bricks carefully removed.
The lid was lowered, and fitted flat on the top of the drum, and then sand placed around the gaps to stop air flow. It was also placed around the base of the drum for the same reason. There should be no sign of any smoke.
Leave for 24hrs. Until cool. . Hopefully there will be some charcoal. :) We think ours was possibly a 30%-40% yield.
    Thank you for watching.
I hope it helps some. If not all who watch.
Sorry if you don't enjoy the music. I like it. I feel it would be boring, if we were all the same. It's all down to personal taste.... And there's always the mute button.
    Happy charcoal making!
    Best wishes.
    M

Thank you for the run down. I also found the mute button pretty quick. The only reason somebody would leave the volume is because they where hoping you would explain what you are doing. Nice video though. Audio mmm not so good. still have you thumbs up.

Thanks! :) Let us know how you get on.
We found it a bit 'trial & error' (Like most things first attempted)
It was great using our own lumpwood charcoal on our BBQ.

Ha ha! YES! You got it, exactly!! & the 'final reminders' burn so well! :D .. It was such great fun to try, LOVED IT. End up smelling like a kipper though by the end of it! But I really love the 'smokey ash' fragrance.. I made some charcoal on my own today. Was worried it would just be a pile of ash in the barrel, but no, this second attempt was even better, but of course I don't like to brag! ;) Hee hee

When to close holes..is it with smoke or no smoke before you close the holes..?

    • @Mar-qs2jx
      @Mar-qs2jx  2 года назад

      Hello.
It’s about getting to know when the moisture in the wood has gone., I understand it that the smoke will change colour slightly then too. That’s when to close it. Still being novices Ourselves, I guess it’s just trial and error.
      Thanks for your question.

nice attempt.... I will also try to attempt this style of yours.. but, without the knowledge of forest officers .. otherwise they will claim all the charcoal or have to buy back from them at the market price.... :)

    • @Mar-qs2jx
      @Mar-qs2jx  4 года назад

Hi. I wish I could tell you an exact amount of time to allow the wood to burn, but this is next to impossible. I feel it is trial an error, and depends on the dampness of the logs and size of them. You will just have to use your eyes to see how your wood is doing. When the moisture has left the wood, the smoke does have a slight blue tinge.
Sorry I can’t be more precise. Good luck with any attempts you might make.

pretty complicated. instead of digging dirt, elevate the burn barrel on top of some rocks etc

If you talked about how long you burn the fire and close off the top it would have been better than all that sorry music if that is what you call it.
