      Most of the video viewers have never worked with metal or they are just starting out. Ive worked with metal all my life! Both in welding and forging. You say the idea is good but the execution is not. Thats an unneeded comment. For what is being accomplished his execution is fine. I dont recall him saying he is the foremost expert in the field of metal work. He's a guy very much like most who enjoys what he's doing and likes to share. If you think the execution is not good then at least share how it could be better so that we can all learn from your expertise. Just saying.

    Even without the pipes and fan, I can attest to the effectiveness and heat output of this arrangement. With the pipes and fan, this would be significantly more efficient in heat distribution. And contrary to other opinions, a standard 55 gal drum will not "burn out". I used this for years in a steel yard shed with no issues. A friend used this to heat his cabin (1000 sq ft) and you had to keep the front door to the cabin ajar and one window slightly open to keep it from getting too hot in the winter (15°F - 30°F), even with smoldering embers. But a caution: the stove must be on a totally fireproof base and cannot be within 2-3 feet of a bare wall because of the residual heat output (much more than a normal wood stove). I also had a chimney sweeping business many years ago and cannot recall anyone having a problem such as creosote build-up in the flue (it's too hot even if you use unseasoned wood or pine).

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  Месяц назад +2

      It sounds like you have extensive experience with this setup! It's great to hear how effective the system can be, especially for heating larger spaces like cabins. Your points about the fireproof base and maintaining proper distance from walls are crucial for safety. The heat output and efficiency you've described make it clear why this method can work so well, even with unseasoned wood. It's interesting that you didn’t see issues with creosote buildup-definitely a plus for anyone considering this type of heating. Thanks for sharing your insights!

    • @MrSteve280
      @MrSteve280 Месяц назад

      @@lmtn The fundamental trick in dealing with creosote is keeping the flue/chimney hot. Creosote forms primarily when hot smoke makes contact with a cold/cool chimney or flue wall. I was asked to clean the chimney of a small cabin where they had burned only unseasoned pine for over 30 years. Because the stone chimney was short (15') and large in diameter, it had a good draft, heated up quickly, and there was no (zero) creosote build-up except on the chimney cap (which was cooled by snow and rain). I forgot to mention, once you get this kind of stove going, it takes a remarkably small amount of wood to keep it hot. Because of the fan, it might go through wood faster. I have no experience with this design but I would have thought that 2-4 pipes are going to be more than enough.

    • @ChristopherJGallagher
      @ChristopherJGallagher 29 дней назад

      Exactly right. I ran fire tube boilers for seven years for a living,. Efficient combustion, clean burn with forced draught from the fan. Even without a fan if the chimneys tall enough natural draught is enough to do a good job.

      Si el barril de chapa está dentro de la casa, sin contacto con la lluvia ni otros agentes corrosivos, y la humedad es del 50%, su vida útil será significativamente mayor. Bajo estas condiciones controladas, la corrosión será mucho más lenta. Aquí hay una estimación más específica:
      Primeros años (1-3 años): La chapa podría empezar a mostrar signos muy leves de oxidación superficial, especialmente en áreas donde el metal esté expuesto al aire de manera uniforme.
      Medio plazo (4-10 años): La oxidación superficial podría hacerse más evidente, pero aún no afectará significativamente la integridad estructural del barril.
      Largo plazo (10-20 años o más): Dependiendo del grosor del metal y de la calidad del acero, la chapa podría empezar a mostrar signos más pronunciados de corrosión. En general, podría durar de 10 a 20 años antes de que la corrosión comience a afectar su integridad estructural de manera significativa.
      Para maximizar la durabilidad:
      Mantén la chapa seca tanto como sea posible.
      Asegúrate de que el ambiente tenga buena ventilación para reducir la acumulación de humedad.
      Considera aplicar una capa de aceite ligero o un recubrimiento anticorrosivo para ralentizar el proceso de oxidación.
      En resumen, bajo condiciones de humedad del 50% y sin exposición a la lluvia o agentes corrosivos, un barril de chapa podría durar fácilmente de 10 a 20 años o más antes de que la corrosión tenga un impacto significativo.

      Using one from thin steel for over ten years. It's upright, inside clad with a few common bricks. Positioned in the corner of the shop, with curved sheet half way around at 2" distance. Using old squirrel cage fan to move the air. Flue is to the other wall, 35' long which adds another big heating surface.
      Using the air condition fan to push the hot air down.
      This is the practice you can still see in old bar and shops picture. Flue temp just before the wall is around 150F, meaning I am able to get almost all of the heat. Have plans to make horizontal batch rocket, but never got the time...
      Need to sweep the smoke tube twice per winter. Still getting just small amount of smoke. If I would insulate the part that is outside, I would get better draft.
      Sometime in the future ...
      With all the "new tech" pushed on people in EU, I am still heating the shop and house at about 1/3 of the price. Green idiots have driven the price of all energy sky high and reliability to the ground. What EU needs, is ONE brutal winter like the US gets, thousands frozen and maybe this madness will stop? But due to stupidity of the commoners, I am not sure.

    Line the fire box (exposed to the direct flames) of the barrel with ~1 inch of clay/sand mix. This improves combustion a lot and protects the thin sheet metal. The hot air tubes however will deteriorate quickly.

      Why would cast iron tubes deteriorate quickly? Fireplaces have metal vent louvers in the direct line of flame and they do not deteriorate. Grills have metal grates exposed to continuous flame and they do not deteriorate. Smokers are also built from 5 gal drums and they do not burn through.

      It's crucial to consider the durability of the barrel stove, especially if it's based on the Bullerjan stoves. Thin sheet metal can indeed be a concern, as it may not withstand the harsh conditions of winter. If possible, you might want to explore reinforcing the drum or consider alternative materials that offer better longevity.

    The problem with most of these kinds of stoves is that they are taking heated air from inside the structure that you've already warmed up and putting it up to chimney because obviously combustion needs air. it would be really good if it had an outside source of air so you won't be sucking cold air in every crack or door jam to replace the air that goes up the chimney. Even some high end tents now come with a round silicone hole near the bottom for outside combustion air.

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  7 месяцев назад +2

      That's a valid concern. Ensuring an outside source of air for combustion is important for efficiency and to prevent the stove from pulling in cold air from inside the structure. This can be achieved by incorporating an air intake duct that draws air from outside directly into the combustion chamber. It's a feature commonly found in modern heating systems to improve efficiency and comfort. Thank you for highlighting this important aspect of stove design.

    An added step to improve efficiency is separate the burning chamber from the tubes and fill in the area around the tubes with sand and copper dust mixture.

      Great suggestion! Separating the burning chamber from the tubes and filling the space around the tubes with a mixture of sand and copper dust is a clever idea to potentially enhance efficiency. This method could contribute to better heat retention and distribution. What does your insurance company think of that ??? Barrels are too thin to stand up to the heat of a wood stove then you have the corrosion during the off season. Creasote is very corrosive to mild steel. Wood stoves need to be made from cast iron and or quarter inch plate steel for a reason !!!

    I didn't see what you did to keep the hot coals and ashes from falling on the floor. A bucket? A grate as well? Here in Alaska we have to keep the surrounding area of the stove insulated to prevent the walls from catching fire. Assuming you did something similar.

      @lmtn  11 месяцев назад

      Thank you for your insightful comment! It's crucial to consider safety measures, especially when dealing with hot coals and ashes. While the video may not explicitly show the setup for handling the ashes, it's common to use a metal bucket or ash container to safely collect and dispose of ashes without causing any damage to the surrounding area. Additionally, having proper insulation and fire-resistant materials around the stove is a smart practice, as you've mentioned. Safety is a top priority, and it's great to see your attention to these important details. If you have any specific safety tips or experiences to share, feel free to do so!

    • @oscaroscar5336
      @oscaroscar5336 11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes I was going to add that there is research that supports that. In that it’s best to separate the burn chamber from the heat exchanger to get the most complete burn of the wood. And to get the most heat out of the exhaust. So if an insulated inner pipe or box was added, and a secondary burn shelf with the burn chamber exhaust exit at the front then across the heat exchanger to the back it would make the appliance more efficient. adding refractory cement around the heat exchanger tubes would add thermo mass with its benefits. Few simple things that would reduce the amount of wood needed to burn. Great video

    • @lmtn
      @lmtn  11 месяцев назад +2

      Absolutely, your research-backed suggestions make a lot of sense! Separating the burn chamber from the heat exchanger for a more complete wood burn is a fantastic idea. The addition of an insulated inner pipe or box, along with a secondary burn shelf, could significantly enhance the efficiency of the appliance. Routing the exhaust across the heat exchanger as you described is a smart approach to extracting maximum heat. And incorporating refractory cement around the heat exchanger tubes adds valuable thermal mass. These thoughtful modifications not only improve efficiency but also contribute to reducing wood consumption. Your insights are spot-on, and I appreciate your contribution to making heating systems more effective and eco-friendly. Keep up the great work! 🔥🌿

    We had a cheap woodstove where i worked, and the top and bottom were cast iron, and the sheet metal shell was very thin steel. It lasted for years. A layer of tiles bedded in mortar would make this stove last a decade, and only needed in the bottom 1/3 or 1/4 of the drum.

      @lmtn  10 месяцев назад

      That's a great suggestion! Adding a layer of tiles bedded in mortar to the bottom section of the drum could indeed help improve the durability and longevity of the stove. The added thermal mass from the tiles would contribute to better heat retention and distribution, making the stove more efficient.
      This approach can also help protect the thin steel sheet metal from excessive heat, reducing the risk of warping or damage over time. It's a practical and cost-effective way to enhance the performance and lifespan of your DIY wood stove. Thank you for sharing this valuable tip!

    bizim oto sanayii çevrelerinde zaten oldukça yaygın kullanılan, kapısı olmayan her açık dükkanda veya atölyede kullanılan soba !!!... motorcularda genellikle atık motor yağı yakılan tiplerini tercih ederler! ve bunları her dükkan sahibi zaten kendi yapar bu iş bir proje gerektirmez!.. Lakin ev yani konut için çok başarısız bi iş. ilkel bi uygulama! kül nereye yığılacak, nasıl çıkarılacak, o boruların arasından curufları temizlemek işkence olur!!!... varilin altında keserek çıkaracağın bir bölümün altına kül birikmesi için çekmece gibi bir hazne ilave ederseniz biraz daha kullanışlı olur yoksa hava deliğnden kül alınmaz! küller birikince içinin temizlenmesi eziyet olur

      Bu önemli geri bildirimin için teşekkür ederim. Evet, bu tür bir proje genellikle daha endüstriyel veya atölye ortamlarında kullanılmak üzere tasarlanmış olabilir ve ev ortamında kullanımı daha fazla zorluk ve sorunlara neden olabilir.
      Kül birikimi, temizlik sorunlarına yol açabilir ve kullanım sırasında ortaya çıkan çeşitli zorluklarla başa çıkmak gerekebilir. Geri bildiriminizle bu tür konulara dikkat çekmek önemli ve başkaları için faydalı olabilir. Eğer başka konularda yardıma ihtiyacınız varsa veya başka bir konuda görüş belirtmek istiyorsanız, sormaktan çekinmeyin.
