I'm 68 ,as a kid we'd camp out ( no adults) fish ALL WEEKEND and eat what we caught. Blue gill,Sun fish, Small Bullhead cats, Northern Pike. All the kids in the neighborhood wouldbe there, memories!
This makes me cry, INSTANTLY!!! this was my childhood.... fishing The Mississippi with my Grandma. She got me up EXTRA early to go dig the worms then we would fish and cook right beside the water.... This meant bringing a cast iron with us. (And mind you, we walked MILES sometimes through all types of terrain to get to whatever obscure spot she would have us fish from.) We would have all the stuff and had to walk (she hardly ever had access to a car) AND carry back the catch for the day. Which was always A LOT because she was the best fisherman I knew. We would eat a couple along the bank and then fill her freezer at home with the rest. That's if she didn't sell them to someone along the way. Fishing didn't just feed her kids and grandkids, it also provided a small source of income if that day was successful enough. For that reason, I used to try EXTRA hard to impress her. 🎣🎣🎣 Every time I think of fishing, I think of her. And I am FLOODED with a rush of overwhelming JOY, she was a delight and I miss her very much.... I hope fishing brings you joy too 🙏 .... I couldn't even get all the way through this Short without 😭😭...as soon as I saw the 🔥. I could smell those fish cookin. And tears drenched this super cute dress I'm wearing. 😂 My grandmas taught me how to fish AND how to wake up early AND how to dress FABULOUS LY. 🤗🤗 Thanks for giving me such a wonderful memory this morning. We used to catch buckets full of sunfish and crappie at my grandpa's cabin in northern Minnesota, fillet fish till midnight, my grandma would dip the fillets in egg and seasoned flour and fry them, crispy delicious, boneless😊
Depending on how good our knives were, sometimes we would skin them otherwise we would scale them, I actually love eating them with the skin still on, adds flavor
My local fishing spot is just rife with Crappies. There are also plenty of Mudpie Trout and a fair amount of Turdfish as well, so I eat good after every outing!

@@JoshdaKnight not sure but it won't hurt to try it on one. I find it's quicker and more stable with the fork. Just make sure you're using the teeth part of the fork. And if at home I scale under water so they're not all over my kitchen 🎣
When I was a kid in the Philippines, my friends and I would do this in the summer. Just a hook made from a nail, nylon line and worms. We'd catch tilapia about the same size and cook them over an open fire. The scales really prevent the meat from drying out and they cook quick. Great midday snack.
Crappie and Blue Gill (Brim, Sunny) are my favorite fish to eat. I live in Delaware and those caught in cooler water, spring and fall seem most flavorful.
During my youth we always had fresh caught fish at least once a week. We also had chickens and a garden. I recently took my nephews fishing and did a catch and cook. They loved it!

I caught some brim with a friend of my grandmothers one day, he had some ponds on his ranch that he stocked decades ago and have since become absolutely full of brim and bass. We pan fried them and added a bit of salt and squeezed a lemon over them, very basic but wonderful.

I like going fishing with my Dad or my brothers too- the day before we'll go to the supermarket & buy a load of food like sandwiches, crisps, chocolate, pop & sweets, my Dad will take a comfy fold out chair for me & a little pop up tent & a camping mattress incase I need a rest (I'm disabled with a lot of health issues & get tired very easily), take a little camping stove to make cups of tea etc & just fish for carp or pike. I'll even sometimes take my little magpie with me- he just happily sits in his little pram (a little cage on wheels which I take him out in) in the shade of the tent, suntrapping (the bird version of sunbathing) & playing with his toys & treasures. The other people around the lake find it hilarious that I take a magpie fishing with me but he loves the sunshine & fresh air. Me & my dad or my brothers will sit chatting & laughing & have a great time. I want to be able to take my baby crow too as soon as she is old enough. But it's just good to be in nature & spending time catching up coz I don't see them very often. I remember one time with my younger brother we were talking about bait & lures & the best way to attract the fish. I had a box of Froot Loops cereal that I'd ordered off a website selling American sweets & snacks (we do have Froot Loops over here in the UK but they aren't the same as the US ones because they taste pretty bland & aren't as brightly coloured due to the rules over here about sugar & additives etc). We decided to try an experiment by throwing a few Froot Loops onto the surface of the water to see if it would attract the fish & I even put one on the hook & it worked! We both caught a beautiful big carp & lots of little fish like perch etc. Was good fun. But there's something peaceful about fishing & the only thing that matters is enjoying it 💙🎣🐟
@@LaoSoftware I'm sorry- that must be tough. I've heard Laos is beautiful though. My Dad grew up in a large, very poor family in a very impoverished area here in the UK. He told me as a kid him & his mates would make fishing rods from branches & old string or even the laces out of their boots (he wasn't kidding either). Sadly the state of things in the UK are very bad at the moment- people are literally having to choose between eating or heating their homes in winter to keep warm. I really hope you get a good fishing rod one day though & sending best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧🇱🇦

Best fish I ever had. I was on my open water diving certification. We spotted a school of good size bluegill as one spot just off the shoreline near camp. The next day after diving my friends got ready to cook. I and another friend took out fishing poles to that spot. We reeled in 18 or 19 good size bluegill. We went back. Cleaned and filleted them. Lightly breaded and right in a cast iron skillet. In all less than 30 minutes from catch to dinner. They were the juiciest, sweetest, most delicate, delicious fillets I've ever had.
Used to live in the countryside. 5 minute of walk, behind the house i rented, you had denivellation, terrain was going down, there was a river. There was a waterfall. Small one. But it was making a creek. It was s9 quiet. I would go there after work, with a big beer. Fish some small fish lile that. There was a lot of them there. I would fish 3 or 4 and cook them with garlic and butter. To this day, it was the best living i ever experienced.

@@kimlarso *sigh* I'm a specialist carer for disabled corvids- birds that CANNOT be released into the wild- my little magpie is missing one of his wings & can't fly so he wouldn't survive in the wild. They aren't "kept in cages" but big enclosures & they spend most of their time out of these enclosures with me where I talk to them & play with them. My little magpie Jake is only put in his pram when I take him out. Either that or if we are going out for only a short while he either rides on my shoulder or is attatched to a glove with jesses on his anklets. Like I said I'm a specialist carer for disabled corvids- my birds are given constant attention, love & care & are constantly occupied. They aren't just kept in a cages & left to get on with it. Please don't be so quick to judge & jump to conclusions when you don't knoa the context

He didn't say he was in survival mode, he said you can eat these fish that most people don't go for. Of course in a survival situation you'd be eating anything. However, it's not crazy to think you could have a fishing rod. Do you people just walk into the woods for the no reason with no equipment?
Bluegill are easily some of the best eating fish. Comparable only to white perch in the spring, during the run when the water is still cold. That cold water makes that meat sooo firm n sweet. 😊
When I was a kid, I used to tie a string around my toe with a small hook and bubblegum. I'd sit on the end of our dock with my feet in the water and catch bluegill all day.
Growing up I had more fun camping and fishing than going to theme parks. Granted I’ve never liked eating fish, but I sure loved it. My daddy made sure no summer days were wasted. Such an amazing man!

My father taught me how to clean and scale fish when I was 5 years old, but that was at some Northern lake or other. The bluegills and crappie in northern Illinois are nearly all from water contaminated by septic systems or lawn chemicals. The retention pond behind our house is stocked with carp, but I’d rather starve than consume it. Full of Roundup and God knows what else. I’ll go with the canned fish, thanks. If you live near pure, clean water, you are blessed. At age 12, I enjoyed brown trout in the Salmon River country-one of the best meals I ever ate!

I grew up winning fishing competitions at our campground. Bluegill and Crappie the best eating fish ever! If filleted not scaled. I could never manage to kill the poor things, so I'm almost 60 and still starving...😅 So I haven't fished in decades, but you have to be the first person to pronounce Crappie like this.

Crappie has 2 pronunciations. It can rhyme with poppy, or as he said it. It's also called the white perch in louisiana, & is their state fish. Louisianans usually say the poppy pronounciation. In case anyone is curious.
We call them "croppie" and they're delicious! We caught several before our tank dried up one year, and ended up keeping the largest as a pet in our fish tank! 😄 It ate all our guppies, and we fed it worms. Named him "fat fishy" 😊

When you're in a survival situation and the fish are biting, keep catching till they stop biting. Then cook what you'll eat and preserve what you won't. Who knows when the fish will bite again.
I remember I cooked these by deep fry and they weren't fishy at all. I only ate these twice in my life and both times were amazing. Flavor was amazing and not gamey. Reminds me of white bass but just less meat. Great survival foods. These things are easy to fish and are tasty.
Get an electric knife. Lots of small filets but bone free.That's how I do it anyway. Filled a big cooler with them one day and filleted them all. Had several ice block ziplocks filled to the brim. Let me tell you they were delicious. Fried and baked. Enjoyed your video.

For those who don’t know you can scale most fish very easily by using a spoon. Safer than using a knife and you can get your kids to do it.

I ate these fish so much when I was a kid here in South Carolina to the point I stop eating fresh water fish. I only eat salt water fish now.

@@LaoSoftware I'm sorry- that must be tough. I've heard Laos is beautiful though. My Dad grew up in a large, very poor family in a very impoverished area here in the UK. He told me as a kid him & his mates would make fishing rods from branches & old string or even the laces out of their boots (he wasn't kidding either). Sadly the state of things in the UK are very bad at the moment- people are literally having to choose between eating or heating their homes in winter to keep warm. I really hope you get a good fishing rod one day though & sending best wishes from the UK 🇬🇧🇱🇦

Yeah, but butter isn’t on the list of most preppers to have on hand in case of emergency, mostly because it’s impractical, so you are HIGHLY unlikely to be in a “survival” situation and have butter on hand

Best fish I ever had. I was on my open water diving certification. We spotted a school of good size bluegill as one spot just off the shoreline near camp. The next day after diving my friends got ready to cook. I and another friend took out fishing poles to that spot. We reeled in 18 or 19 good size bluegill. We went back. Cleaned and filleted them. Lightly breaded and right in a cast iron skillet. In all less than 30 minutes from catch to dinner. They were the juiciest, sweetest, most delicate, delicious fillets I've ever had.
Used to live in the countryside. 5 minute of walk, behind the house i rented, you had denivellation, terrain was going down, there was a river. There was a waterfall. Small one. But it was making a creek. It was s9 quiet. I would go there after work, with a big beer. Fish some small fish lile that. There was a lot of them there. I would fish 3 or 4 and cook them with garlic and butter.
To this day, it was the best living i ever experienced.

Looks really good! I like going fishing with my Dad or my brothers too- the day before we'll go to the supermarket & buy a load of food like sandwiches, crisps, chocolate, pop & sweets, my Dad will take a comfy fold out chair for me & a little pop up tent & a camping mattress incase I need a rest (I'm disabled with a lot of health issues & get tired very easily), take a little camping stove to make cups of tea etc & just fish for carp or pike. I'll even sometimes take my little magpie with me- he just happily sits in his little pram (a little cage on wheels which I take him out in) in the shade of the tent, suntrapping (the bird version of sunbathing) & playing with his toys & treasures. The other people around the lake find it hilarious that I take a magpie fishing with me but he loves the sunshine & fresh air. Me & my dad or my brothers will sit chatting & laughing & have a great time. I want to be able to take my baby crow too as soon as she is old enough. But it's just good to be in nature & spending time catching up coz I don't see them very often. I remember one time with my younger brother we were talking about bait & lures & the best way to attract the fish. I had a box of Froot Loops cereal that I'd ordered off a website selling American sweets & snacks (we do have Froot Loops over here in the UK but they aren't the same as the US ones because they taste pretty bland & aren't as brightly coloured due to the rules over here about sugar & additives etc). We decided to try an experiment by throwing a few Froot Loops onto the surface of the water to see if it would attract the fish & I even put one on the hook & it worked! We both caught a beautiful big carp & lots of little fish like perch etc. Was good fun. But there's something peaceful about fishing & the only thing that matters is enjoying it 💙🎣🐟

@@kimlarso *sigh* I'm a specialist carer for disabled corvids- birds that CANNOT be released into the wild- my little magpie is missing one of his wings & can't fly so he wouldn't survive in the wild. They aren't "kept in cages" but big enclosures & they spend most of their time out of these enclosures with me where I talk to them & play with them. My little magpie Jake is only put in his pram when I take him out. Either that or if we are going out for only a short while he either rides on my shoulder or is attatched to a glove with jesses on his anklets. Like I said I'm a specialist carer for disabled corvids- my birds are given constant attention, love & care & are constantly occupied. They aren't just kept in a cages & left to get on with it. Please don't be so quick to judge & jump to conclusions when you don't knoa the context

Bluegill are easily some of the best eating fish. Comparable only to white perch in the spring, during the run when the water is still cold. That cold water makes that meat sooo firm n sweet. 😊

When I was a kid, I used to tie a string around my toe with a small hook and bubblegum. I'd sit on the end of our dock with my feet in the water and catch bluegill all day.
Growing up I had more fun camping and fishing than going to theme parks. Granted I’ve never liked eating fish, but I sure loved it. My daddy made sure no summer days were wasted. Such an amazing man!

My father taught me how to clean and scale fish when I was 5 years old, but that was at some Northern lake or other. The bluegills and crappie in northern Illinois are nearly all from water contaminated by septic systems or lawn chemicals. The retention pond behind our house is stocked with carp, but I’d rather starve than consume it. Full of Roundup and God knows what else.

Crappie has 2 pronunciations. It can rhyme with poppy, or as he said it. It's also called the white perch in louisiana, & is their state fish. Louisianans usually say the poppy pronounciation. In case anyone is curious.

I remember I cooked these by deep fry and they weren't fishy at all. I only ate these twice in my life and both times were amazing. Flavor was amazing and not gamey. Reminds me of white bass but just less meat. Great survival foods. These things are easy to fish and are tasty.
Get an electric knife. Lots of small filets but bone free.That's how I do it anyway. Filled a big cooler with them one day and filleted them all. Had several ice block ziplocks filled to the brim. Let me tell you they were delicious. Fried and baked. Enjoyed your video.
