  • In this video I will discuss the working of Kawasaki’s KIPASS system on the GTR 1400 / Concours 14 motorbike. I’ll demonstrate how the main FOB key as well as the RFID spare key works, and how you can do an emergency start in the event of a flat FOB battery. The sound in my first ever video sucks big time, but I’ll work on that!

    Thanks for this. I have a 2008 which I have owned since 2010 (13.5 + years now). I have had lots of people tell me they have heard (only one first person account, and his problem happen right after a rain storm) that the KIPASS system is a problem. My bike came with two keys and I have never had a problem with the electronics. The only problem I have had is from the rain. I keep my bike sheltered at home, but at work I have to leave it out in the elements. Eventually moisture from the rain, and it rains a lot where I live, works it's way into the ignition, fuel, & saddle bag locks and makes them stiff. I just oil the locks (see a RUclips videos on how to oil the ignition switch) every now and then and they work fine.
    But........ yesterday I left the key laying the bike rather than in my pocket, I later found it on the road, absolutely crushed. I called my local dealer, they are a new Kawasaki Dealer, so they are not familiar with the key/transponder replacement process yet, and the parts person told me there are 6 keys listed for my bike. I watched your video and learned a lot, I have been using the system for more than a decade and didn't know how it worked! I have updated the dealer and they are working on getting me two keys, I know this is going to be expensive, but I am willing to pay for it. In the whole time I have owned the bike I have never had anything break/fail. I have obviously had to do maintenance, but not one mechanical failure. Thanks again for the info.

    Great video, perfectly explained. I have owned my 2011 model GTR 1400 for almost a year now. The seller gave me the owner's pack complete,including some keys and other bits and pieces. It seemed I only had one remote fob and it worried me a little, I'm prone to mislaying my keys sometimes, and I know it's a horror story if yo ulose your keys. I was considering contacting my local Kawasaki dealer and taking the big hit for a second fob. But this video prompted me to seek out that owner's pack again and lo and behold, tucked away inside was the small "card" type fob that needs to be held against the ign switch. I went out to the garage and tried it out as shown in the video, and it worked perfectly . So this has helped me greatly, and saved me a costly purchase. Thanks so much!

    Thank you for an informative video showing how the FOB system works on the Kawasaki GTR.
    The FOB system is very secure and generally quite reliable.
    But as we all know there is a lot of miss information on the WEB on what happens when you lose all your FOBs and can no longer start your motorcycle.
    If you speak to your dealer they will always tell you that you will have to replace the SCU and if you physically lose your stove top key they will get you to also buy a new lock set. This is not their fault but it is how this system and many others are designed.
    As explained there are 2 transponder systems in use on this bike. You have the active FOB which can sense the bike from about 1.5m away. Its control unit with antenna is located under the seat and then you have the passive section of the FOB which is a 4D chip inside the FOB and this can be placed at the front of the ignition switch to sense it and this will allow the bike to also start.
    Of course both active and passive parts of the FOB will have to be programmed to allow it to work.
    Since new FOBs are so pricey now I personally like the FOB key card (21175-0256). It fits in your wallet and you just hold it to the front of the ignition switch to start the bike.
    But the most important question that is always asked how can I start my bike if I have no FOBS ??
    New parts cost many $$$ and some places are out of reach of the KDS system so things start to get difficult.
    (You cannot use the KDS system to add new FOBs if you have no working FOBs or passive card for your bike)
    My company can add a new FOB or passive key card if you have lost all your FOBs. Even if your SCU has reached its maximum allocation we can still get it working and this is all at a fraction of new parts prices.
    All you need to do is supply us the required parts and a new FOB if you have one. Just make sure it is the correct frequency for your bike as there are 2 different frequencies depending upon country.
    If you don't want to buy a new FOB then we will just supply the passive FOB card. You can then always later get a dealer to add a FOB providing they have the KDS tool.
    I hope some of this clears up what can actually be done.
    We are based in Australia and happy to accept jobs worldwide as we quite often do.

    • @RoamingCoastie

      So, if I purchased a bike that only has the emergency card and not the regular fobs, can I get active fobs matched to the bike? Or copies of the emergency card fob?

    • @ecumeistro6152
      @ecumeistro6152 6 месяцев назад

      Yes, a new FOB can be added by us or by your Kawasaki dealer. The emergency card can be copied onto a transponder key using a clone chip inside the key but it is not possible to copy onto another emergency card. If you have a used FOB and its serial number then it can be added to another bike. If you don't have its serial number it still can be done but is very much more complicated as other matching items are required.

    How do you feel, or how secure is to actually have "the key" always inserted and left on the bike? Meaning that they can't brute force the key just to turn? Shall we actually remove the key from the bike if in doubt?
    I felt a lot of insecurities when I discovered that the actual physical key is inserted behind the push button. Any thoughts?

    • @villionsgarage
      @villionsgarage  2 месяца назад +1

      There's no way to turn the key or remove it without unlocking the ignition with the FOB. So I feel comfortable leaving it in - I've never taken mine out. Even if they force the key to somehow turn, the system is completely inactive without the FOB, and the bike won't start. But you are always welcome to remove yours if you want to - no harm done. Thanks for watching!

    Interesting video I came across after buying my first 2013 GTR1400 but without the fob. Is there any hope of getting a replacement fob and getting it programmed to the bike which has only the key in the ignition?

    • @villionsgarage
      @villionsgarage  2 года назад

      Hi Marc. So can you start your bike with only the key in the ignition? Or do you have the small RFID card to start it?
      As long as you can get the bike switched on, you can pair a new Fob. Your local dealer can order and sell you a new Fob - ensure that you get the new Fob's serial number with it because you'll need that to pair it to the bike. Thanks for watching!

      @@villionsgarage Hi, thanks for the prompt reply. I don't have the fob or the RFID card. The previous owner said he lost the fob at the scene of the accident he had with the bike a few months ago. With that context, is there any hope of getting the bike started without having to spend thousands to order a new fob and matching fob unit?

    • @villionsgarage
      @villionsgarage  2 года назад

      @@Cyclizt so according to my research, no you can't. You need to power up the bike to be able to access the control unit via the KDS software to program new fobs and RFID cards. To power it up....you need a working fob or RFID card🙈 You'll need to order a pre programmed unit with fob, install that on the bike, and then use KDS to pair everything. The previous owner only had the one fob and nothing else?

    Even with a new battery in my fob when out riding from time to time the dash tells me No Transponder even though its in my coat pocket, the warning lasts for about 3 seconds then goes out..

    • @villionsgarage
      @villionsgarage  2 года назад +1

      I've had that as well. So I did 3 cycles of putting it against the ignition key, and then 3 cycles of putting it on the seat, starting the bike, and it solved it. As long as I ride it often. After as month or so, I get that message again...

    Can the short range part of the FOB or the card be cloned like any automotive key? In my country Kawasaki never imported officialy this bike so they don't have the equipment to make copys of FOBS, I want to make a copy of the short range key at least, mine is a 2008, two FOBS.

    • @villionsgarage
      @villionsgarage  2 года назад

      As far as I know it is a standard RFID type tag, so I think you might be able to clone one if you have the right reader. I would just buy a new Kawasaki key card and pair it to the bike with the software at a dealer. Even other dealers (not only kawasaki) can also pair the keys with their KDS.

      The fob has two chip, long range and short range chip, long range can only be cloned by Kawasaki, short range can be cloned. I already did it and it serves as an emergency in case of loss.
