    Holding them in the well is a great idea. It keeps them close to the water temperature so they don't stress too much. I remember when I worked for Ansett Airfreight and the crabbers from Stanage Bay would bring in their live crabs to send south. They layered mangrove leaves in the styro boxes to ease stress on the muddies.

      Good question. We have covered this in other videos and talked about it in detail on our “Guys in the Gulf” Podcast. Basically the mudcrab population in the Northern Territory isn’t highly impacted by fishing or over fishing. It is completely dependant on wet seasons and how much rain each particular system gets.
      We don’t have a mudcrab population problem here.
      Professional crabbers have worked this river for over 30 years and there are still miles of crabs available for everyone after a good wet season.
      There is no science or data available that would suggest it’s a good idea to bring a law to stop jennys being taken here.
      Ash explains it a lot better than me on the podcast.

    Does he throw the old bait on deck instead of in the water? Why is that?

    • @MikeyCunninghamFishing
      @MikeyCunninghamFishing  9 месяцев назад +1

      He would keep the old bait in a tub. Then dump it somewhere away from his pots on the way home. His theory is that he doesn't like throwing the old bait over the side near the pots he has just rebaited. Because he doesnt want the crabs having a free feed instead of going inside his crab pots.

      He goes through an agent in Darwin. The agent can send crabs anywhere I reckon. As long as it’s decent quantities and regular.

      I’m not exactly sure mate. But what I can tell you is the 3 Curados I have are all different. None of them are DC models. The oldest one is over 12 years old and the newest is around 6 years old.

      They have their own license ... you can lease the license or buy it out, right..

      The crabbers are all their own bosses that work for themselves. But most of them have “agents” in Darwin that they send their crabs to. The agents re-package the crabs ready for the plane and deal with selling them all over Australia.
