- The Mad Mullet. He is a Gulf Mud Crabber, and he loves life. But when two cyclones (Lincoln & Megan) came charging through, the aftermath threatened Mullet's livelyhood. Along with some of the other Gulf Mud Crabbers, there was a worry that with such MAJOR flooding of the McArthur River, the mud crabs might not come back in this season. So I hopped on board with The Mad Mullet on his crabbing boat to go and find out... have the mud crabs come back in yet?

With the Mullet holding down so many crab with his foot each day it’d be strong enough to crush a coconut
I was there during 2011 and 2013, hanging out for my last trip.
Here in New Zealand we got smashed with the worsted cyclone in the last 100 years . The tons of silt has smothered alot of reefs and these millions of tons of logs and other stuff sitting on the sea floor. This will have in time a massive impacted on our crayfishing and wetfish industry

I remember Ash talking about the difference between a slow long rain vs dumping back in the early episodes. I was wondering how this was going to impact the muddies. I guess I'll tune in to find out!

Loving the vids mate FYI in NSW you’re allowed to keep female crabs so long as they aren’t carrying ova(eggs) and they are over the legal size just in case people keep saying you shouldn’t be allowed to keep females just tell them in the most populated state in the country you’re allowed to keep female mud crabs as well.
Soooo happy for the Mad Mullet that the crabs have not gone missing post cyclone. Happy days all is OK. Big hit on the Mud Crabber huts. Stay happy all will be ok.😊

You guy’s really are true blue Aussies, my wife and I are currently in Cooktown with our car, boat and caravan and are just waiting for the roads to open so we can get to the tip of Australia and then we head to our buck list destination of King Ash Bay 😁😁. Great to see you and mad mullet survived the cyclones that pulverised the area, we coped it hear in FNQ too at Port Douglas and we're cut off for a while after our road in was destroyed but we made it too, hopefully the barra are going nuts too

Awesome video mate. Can't believe how flooded King Ash bay got. As far as Jennie's go from what I've been told at legal size in the NT they don't breed anymore so why the other states don't allow it I just don't know 🤷. Hope to get up there next year after the wet and hopefully catch up with you guys 👍 and looking forward to the next podcast 😊👍

Hey Mikey and Mad Mullet, top trip to begin the year with after a crazy NT Wet season.
Quick question lads, after pulling a rock solid full crab from the system , tying up and transport then to table, do they lose meat content from being rock solid out of the water on catch to the table ?
Also can the Mad Mullet predict after doing a round on the pots where the movement is of them given some sections of pots have more than others in them for his next drop of pots to follow them ?
Also how many crab to average a full basket legends ?

To answer your first question, everything happens so quickly that from the time Mullet catches the crab, it can be on a restaurant table within a few days. Probably maximum of 10 days. So they are stil l going to be top quality by the time they are consumed.
And predicting the crab movements... years ago he used to put a small cable tie on a few empty crabs that he would be throwing back. If he caught one of them in the next week or so in another location, he would know where they are moving. But he doesn't do that any more. He just hunts around with his pots and if some come up empty, he will just stack them on the boat and move them to a new location.

Only when he needs to mate. They service them regularly and run them for thousands of hours.

When they are soft, he throws them back. If they are soft, they probably don't have much meat in them and won't survive the trip to the restaurants.

Some people tie their boats down. Most people try to find some shelter for their boats.

How many hours mate does mullet usually run his yammy too before he trades them in there a great engine the 150
We just swapped the motor on his boat a few weeks back. The old one had over 3,000 hours.

It varies throughout the year depending on the market price of crab. Can be a few hundred dollars. But can be over a thousand.

Micky Last I was at king Ash Bay crabbers were using Horse meat Now your using chicken was it price ,available or another reason ?
Yea they have used the hen wings for a few years now. I think it’s a combo of reasons… price, availability and also very convenient to rebait pots with the hen wings.
