I would be a rookie at truck driving around there, all my Ford tough trucks had everything on the other side of the truck despite the country I was in.
@@MikeyCunninghamFishing hahaha glad ya got a laugh out of it. Love the content! would be awesome sinking a few tinnies up there with you fellas for sure. Going to the Gregory River later this month after cherapin... no muddies where we are going but coming from the sunny coast it's always a treat heading up north. Keep the vids coming 👍
Mikey mate i remember being a little boy and you teaching me and now i just sit here and enjoy these videos mate. Hope for the best for ya mate love the vids keep them coming!
Mate that was the best mud crab vid i have ever seen. The process you blokes go through to feed us is awesome. Well done to all involved. Quality of the vid was spot on. I am a newbie to this channel from SEQ and caught one crab in 12 months. Sold the shit pots from the bait store for more than i paid for them. Bonus.
If you liked this one, check out my original “Gulf Mud Crabbers” episode I uploaded late last year. It’s a long one but by far my best episode ever. Let me know what you think. Cheers Mikey 🦀👍🏼🤠
Love the channel. Could you do a go pro in the crab pot again like you did a few episodes ago and maybe one on the end of your fishing line? Keep the good work up guy's.
The dry season here is great. The weather is perfect every day. But there are lots of people. The wet season it hot and muddy. But less people. And the Barra fishing can be better in the warmer months. So it depends what sort of trip you want to do. Home this helps mate.
This video was awesome! I loved seeing the process of crabbing from start to finish. The Goldies Before Coldies shirts look great, definitely getting one. Thanks Mikey!
Woohoo Mikeys back 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 Say mikey you should tell Ash to organise a hydraulic pot puller. All the pro crabbers use them here in Port Lincoln SA in their 5 to 7 metre tinnys for blue swimmer or sand crabs. It sure as hell beats the shit out of hand pulling.
Yea, interesting idea mate. They are usually crabbing in water less than 2 metres deep. So the rope is only 5 or so metres long I reckon. Might take longer with a puller?? I dunno.
@@MikeyCunninghamFishing No way, I was a pro crabber for years myself, our water is often only shallow too, sometimes only a metre, believe me Mikey they are brilliant, just gaff the rope, throw it over the hydraulic wheel, and in she comes, it takes all the weight and shallow water is no problem. Most of us only have ten pot’s registered, but we pull them constantly up and down for hours. The professional scale fishermen are only allowed hoop nets or drop nets, so the crabs can crawl off if you don’t constantly pull them. The aluminium arm with the wheel on the end just swings out when in use, then swings back and is locked in when finished. Hydraulic hose is connected to a small generator. There’s not a single pro that pulls by hand anymore 😎👍🏽. PS.. your shirts look great and I’ve already ordered one ☝️
17:50..... young boy finished early.... come over to help, check for empties..... so no , " your my competitor" , all about , we are mates here...... i shoulda moved north years ago
I think you’ll find it’s the time involved in making each pot by hand. It’s a huge job. The fella that made all Ash’s new pots started making them in November. He doesn’t pay $300 a pot. In the video he was saying he wouldn’t let one go for less than $300. Hope that all makes sense mate. Thanks for watching. -Mikey
“Scylla Serrata” is the scientific name. I’ve never seen a Dungeness crab before but after looking them up, I can see they do look a little bit similar.
Absolutely fantastic video mate! I’ve enjoyed watching these over the past couple of years, would really like to make the trip up there and check out king ash bay! We’re planning a trip this time next year! Just ordered a shirt 😉 Tight lines and take care out there Mikey!
In a restaurant the customer would pay $100+ for a dish. The price changes throughout the year dramatically for mud crabs. I would say one individual crab is worth between $10 and $30 to the mud crabber depending on its size and price throughout the year. They are paid per KG rather than per crab.
There are only something like 50 mud crab licences in the whole NT. Years ago there were hundreds… so now because there are so few, they have become quite expensive. A lot of crabbers will lease a licence or 2 for the year. It’s in the tens of thousands. (Eg maybe 20 or 30 grand a year). If a licence becomes available for sale I think you’ll find they will be asking north of $200,000.

I can see that people might be concerned when they see the footage… It’s true that a lot of crabs are taken from this region each year. For over 30 years in fact. Yet they are still plentiful. This area is not overfished. Fisheries and scientists visit the area multiple times each year and gather data.
@Mikey Cunningham well.... I've wanted to try the mud crab And it has been said all my life that dungeness is the best tasting crab I didn't believe it so I have tast tested it up against probably 6 or 7 other crab and as of yet I haven't tasted better hence the interest

Are the Fry boys still crabbing up there at King Ash Bay ?
I’m not sure mate. Not from King Ash Bay. There are other crabbers in the Gulf though.
Great to see you back mate we thought you must have given up or worse moved south.
Just did a bit of travelling around over Christmas. Back in the NT now mate. Back in video making mode.
When I used to go to King Ash Bay the Crab truck would be loaded at the Ramp and they used Horse meat back then
Yes mate, they load at the ramp still. It was too muddy for the truck to drive in during this video.
Good to see you back I’m heading up to Arnhem Land on Tuesday away from the rat race in Sydney
Good to see ya back at it looking forward to the next one.
Great to see the gang again! Still amazes me how they tie up crabs in bare feet, if that was me, I'd be wearing steel cap safety boots ha ha.
Hahah. Me too mate. Although I’ve never seen one of them bitten on the toes or foot before. Only on the fingers.

How is the bait held in ?
There is a spike that they push the bait onto. The spike then is locked into place by pushing it across onto a basic hook/eyelet kind of thing.
I can’t wait for that hat to be released, looks unreal, awesome video as always Mikey
You can pre order it now mate if you like. It’s on the website. They should arrive in the next couple of weeks hopefully.
