Tommy Ribs - Yes, they were “great” fights, but the punishment they meted out to each other was so heavy that it was no doubt a contributory factor to brain damage and their deaths in their 6O’s and early 70’s. In Ali’s case, for his last 30-odd years he was a mere shadow of his former self.
I enjoyed those fights as much as the next person ... at the time. But the time will surely come when such brutality in the name of sport must end. Few heavyweight prize fighters live to a ripe, heathy old age.
Much as we “shun” what passed for sport in Roman Gladiatorial contests, so will future generations look back on the barbarity of the sport of heavyweight boxing, and shake their heads in dismay at the brutality of our “civilisation” and sporting “culture”.
Other sports are increasingly bringing in measures to protect their athletes from serious head injury.
The big difference between professional boxing and most other sports where serious head injury might be occasioned is that the ultimate object in boxing is to cause your opponent brain injury. That is what a “knockout” is ... and we applaud.

LOL I love how Ali thought at first that Frazier intended to fight him when he stood up. Ali stands up like "back up boy" then realizes he is walking away and then reaches to grab him haha.

People back then had so much more chill. Seriously, it is so refreshing to see people actually behave like adults. You can tell both Ali and Frazier respected each other a lot.

Frazier actually scored a huge psychological victory in using Ali's leverage to drop him in his chair. They were both visibly tense, as is expected, but you can see Frazier ease into his responses afterward, knowing he can turn Ali if he needed to.

I was born in '88 but seeing these shows from the 70's and 80's with the simple set up..classical (Jazz) music to go with that, good, clean questions, no big stages, lights and clowning audiences who don't have a clue. Makes me wish I would have been born 20 or 30 years earlier.
