Ah, the first guardian, Dedan... Just wow. When I saw Dedan, I knew instantly that they PURPOSELY made his personality like that to make your head think that all of the guardians would act like that. But he was actually really putting on an act, as he was a guardian and he needed to make the Elson work so he went aggressive and that method worked. But the Batter and the players saw only the aggressive side of him. Because he was very nice in the sketch world and Dedan actually thought that the Batter was just an Elson, so he yelled. And he fought you because of protection of the people and himself.
Which means that the reason that he fights you later is because of the Elsens that you killed due to them becoming Burnts. He knows that when an elsen encounters any sort of spectre, their first instinct is to panic, and their seccond instinct is to panic. None of them would ever think of attacking these things, so Dedan realises your not a normal person. But, as we all know, when a burnt is defeated, they revert back to elsen form before disapearing, supposedly having *Died*. Dedan noticed Batter killing these people, and decided that he apsolotely positively had to get rid of him before every one in Zone 1 is *DEAD.* Please correct me if i made any mistakes.
The unfortunate thing is that Dedan wasn't really helping the Elsen's case… nor did the other Guardians, no training or anything like that to boost morale and confidence. He has failed. *_And now, Dedan will be purified._*
@@tonacion he did. Rather than talking things out, he just kills and kills. He even completely insults Hugo, his own son after defeating the Queen. “He has your eyes.” “His are full of fear.” And just because his son is suffering gives him no right to destroy the entire universe because of it.

This is where we can make parallels with gnosticism: Hugo is Demiurge, who, because of his ignorance and lack of responsibility, creates imperfect material world. It's bosses like this that make me think that the Batter ended the world out of sympathy. Cause when you think about it, the whole world of OFF is corrupt with mistreatment and pain. The Batter saw nothing but endless torture and felt the need to put an end to it all. Just a theory, though. I love this game for how much it makes you think.
The world in OFF is broken and full of misery, but it's still (barely) functioning and there are people in it that do want to be alive, but just want things to be better. Meanwhile, the Batter's mission to purify the world is to stop all this misery, and delete a broken existence, but nobody wants that, and whether or not the Batter's actions are the best option is up for debate. The whole thing is a big tragedy.
My interpretation is its just a character of the narrative raging against the heavens, in a kinda Lovecraftian way but still in the confines of the game.
@@KingThrillgore The Batter rages against all horizons. That said, I recommend playing Talia Mair's "Hieronymus Bosch's Brutal Orchestra". It checks most boxes an OFF fan would want to see checked
See the thing is, the first thing you think when hearing this track is from a heroic batter perspective, sounds like a song of a triumphing hero in a way, but the nature of the song is in its own way panicky and scared, like Dedan, knowing that they are up against something very powerful and evil, and knowing that they can't protect the people of the zone
In retrospect, I wonder if Dedan's rage was really frustration. His zone is the source of most of the worlds basic elements, if spectres are constantly appearing while elsen continue being so meek they're incompetent, Dedan getting aggressive sort of makes sense. He may be exhausted, which I feel makes sense paired his state in 'The Room'. Out of the three he seems, to me at least, possibly the least malicious out of the three guardians. Dedan is extremely degrading to his workers, downright verbally abusive to elsens that're clearly already strung out (especially in alma), but for the most part he seems to actually do his job of protecting. Japhet grew saddened by his subjects continuing to worry no matter how hard he tried (which seems to be a lot), leading him to _try_ to alley with the spectres and doing what he did to Valerie. He didn't protect his people, but recognizes his failure, as well as his evil deed(s). Enoch is fair at face value to his workers (according to the zone 2 library), but is actually just extremely deceitful. He lies about the spectres, killing more elsen, burning their bodies to get more workers hooked on sugar to then repeat the cycle. I think he's the worst out of the three, especially given Enoch thinks the queen sent the batter, implying he either knows what he's doing is wrong or even the queen takes issues with his actions.
One of my favorite tracks in the game. I hear a little of a "struggle against fate" type of thing in the music. Dedan may be well aware the Batter will kill him eventually, but decides to go out swinging. *"To the last I grapple at thee; From Hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee." - Captain Ahab* The way the song gets slower and reaching that metal drum thing just before it loops makes me think of someone exhausting themselves, gradually lumbering movements and losing actual force before before falling over and panting heavily (the metal drum beats at the end)
This boss fight was intense. The preludes of him assaulting and insulting Elsen and the meeting in the Director's Office all lead up to this wonderful and suspenseful bossfight. But I think we can all agree this wouldn't be as good without the track. I just like to imagine Dedan has this playing on loop in his house all the time waiting for someone to come in.
i love this theme. it sounds so tense, angry, and bitter. it sums up a bossfight with dedan. i could imagine dedan swiping at you, anger and hate in his eyes.
Dedan has to be the living incarnation of rage. He just does everything a person will possibly do when he's angry: Take it out on someone, attack people, threaten people, and use foul language very often. And I love it!
He's never shown to attack harmless people like Elsens. He only attacks those who he sees as a threat to him or his zone, such as Spectres and the Batter.
Fake Orchestra. Yes, it's fake but real. This tune, it is that of a boss battle yes.... but it is hollow, and something feels missing. Wrong or fake, if you will. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels that way.
Fake Orchestra. Or, putting on a big facade of a show; exacly as Dedan does when confronted by the batter and when pushed by the infuriatingly fearful elson...
lol I've thought the same thing listening to a lot of the tracks off this OST. Peper Steak and this song in particular would make such excellent beats for a really unique-sounding concept album. If I were a better lyricist I'd write it myself.
Airigh Maybe the impressionable young Hugo mistook the Batter for the bad guy from Panic in Ballville, and then went out of his way to try to "defeat" the Batter to help his hero Boxxer. Being the son of the Queen and the Batter, I suspect that he may have control over time and space and that Hugo somehow retroactively reconstructed the Nothingness into various zones, by altering the timeline for the advantage of Dedan, Japhet and Enoch. However, in messing with time and space, it warped the minds of the new Guardians and the minds of every other inhabitant.
“absolute legend rips open coat to fight crazy man in a baseball uniform”
Dedan has his coat closed in one of his concept arts so that sounds accurate.

Absolutely. That's probably part of why Batter dismissed the comic as stupid.
