  • How to Fix or Replace a Third Brake Light LED - 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 Honda Civic
*** Updated 5/2017 *** The soldering fix failed again after 5 months (first time it lasted longer). I'm beginning to wonder if the issue wasn't in the wiring itself. I ended up just buying a replacement light for around $45.

Works like a charm. Same process, just replace the old unit with the new unit. No soldering necessary.

Apparently this is a common issue with 8th generation Honda Civics where the third brake light LED will either stop working altogether or work intermittently. The dealer will want to charge you $300+ and a replacement light is around $100. However, the real problem is simply a weak solder point! With a few cheap soldering tools, you can fix this for probably less than $5.
You'll need a soldering iron, solder and a Philips head screwdriver and probably an hour of your time.
This fix should be very similar on other Honda Civics, CRVs and other cars with LED third brake lights.
However, perform this at your own risk. Refer to your service manuals and warranties. I'm not responsible for how it works out for you.
I hope this video helps! Thanks for watching!

The only video I've seen that actually shows how to get at the center brake light on a 2007 Civic coupe!

Repair Update: I repaired my light thanks to this video but a couple of months later the light went out again. It is my assumption that Honda did not put any QC into this light when it was manufactured.
I went to a junkyard and got 2 different lights from 2 different ‘08 Civics and the results were the same, the lights did not work when I plugged it in. I tested both LED lights with a battery but instead of attaching the leads to the soldering points, I place the leads on the terminals that is on opposite end of the circuit board. The lights lit up instantly.
Then I tested the terminals where the wires are soldered to the circuit board. The (+) is good but the (-) did not. This is consistent for both lights.
I conclude that both of these junkyard lights did not work because of poor grounding due to faulty soldering of the ground wire to the ground terminal on the circuit board. I think this is what the problem is for my light.
So for anyone doing this repair, I suggest disassembling the board from the light, solder the ground wire really well to the board and test for function before reinstalling.
Thanks for reading and sorry for such a long ass post. I hope this saved somebody some money.

The part probably went to the lowest bidder and designed to last X number of years which was acceptable to some bean counter somewhere. Thanks for the update!

Thanks buddy. Big help knowing to just yank on the deck plastic, had this done in 10 minutes. I didn't resolder, just threw a part at it and called it a day, but still... $60 versus $260. Great video.

Haha, it always helps to see someone else rip the trim out first so I'm not afraid of destroying it. I'm glad it helped! I ended up having to buy a new brake light anyway as this solder fix kept going out (if I totally desoldered and resoldered it probably would have been fine), but like you said, just throw a budget part at it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks. This was my first time soldering in awhile, and your video helped me get it. I saved 80$ for replacement assembly.

YES. You're welcome. This makes me happy. I'm glad it helped! It eventually failed again so I just replaced it. Hopefully that won't be your fate.

I never thought I would be the type to work on my car myself. I just bought an 08 EX coupe just like yours. Pretty badass car to be 10 years old.
Since buying I’ve had to do some tweaks on it.
    Aux port solder.
    Brake light
Now working on replacing the old and WORN OUT speakers. This video helped me a LOT.
I was so worried removing the back deck of access was going to be a pain in the ass I was going to pay almost 700 to have someone replace my speakers. Definitely DIYing with some Crutchfield magic.
    Thanks for the video!

I'm so glad to hear this. 8th gen civics were really nice and have aged well IMO. Keep doing more stuff. The more you do the more you realize most things really aren't that hard once you get the general idea down.

Skeptical at first since the PCB looked more worn out than the cables themselves, but decided to give it a try. Soldering the cables to the board was a bit tedious but worth it. Thank you! It worked like a charm!

Thank you so much. I was bugged with Honda quoting $300 and local mechanic offering to reduce it to $90 if I get the light. I was all set to go with the local mechanic but final thought of checking the DIY videos pushed me to watch this video. I just spent less than 25 mins and it’s all done. Wow big thanks to you for making a rocket science to comic for me lol. Much appreciated.

Thanks for the video. On mine the wire was not corroded, the mettle standoff that intercepts the PCB had a broke solder joint.
This should have really been designed as a single PCB and not a small PCB connected to a sheet metal backplane. At very least if they drilled some holes in the mettle standoffs so that the solder would form a more solid connection.
I give your video an A+ and this design an F.

Hopefully it helped you. You sometimes wonder why things are designed a certain way and just scratch your head. The more I'm around, even or especially with fortune 500 companies, you realize they don't nearly have it all together and I'm sure many arguments and suggestions from engineers go unheeded by the bean counters and suits.

Had an hevulla of a time putting my deck back on, I broke off the corner stump next the the left rear speaker twice as if the hole is too small edges too sharp what not, until I threaded a fishing line and pull it from under so it aligns the way it should. Whadda pain.

I haven’t dissembled anything yet but if the 3rd break light is out then I’ll have to replace the whole thing? No simple bulb swap? Thanks for the video!

Somehow was this comment missed? I'm sorry! You've no doubt found out that it is an LED assembly and not a simple bulb like in the good old days.

hi, thanks for posting this video. Can you or someone help me with this problem please: I replaced the side brake bulbs (both were dead) and now the brake light goes on and stays on all time only when the headlights are on. When the headlights are off, the brake light doesn't come on when I pres the brake. I checked the switch at the brake pedal, it seems OK, looks like new. I am not sure when the side brake lights died, but after I replaced the side bulbs as described above, my third brake light died. Any suggestions/ideas? Thanks.

Looks like removing the rear deck on a coupe is much easier. On a sedan, you have to take the whole back seat out, the side rear panels blah-blah before able to remove the rear deck. Sedan pain.
