  • A common on the 8th Gen Civic is the Upper 3rd Brake light in the window stops illuminating when pressing on the brakes. Since many states will fail your car's inspection if the light doesn't work like mine, you may want to know how to fix this. It's an EASY repair. You just a couple of screwdrivers, a 12v battery to test with, a soldering iron, and some solder. I stink at soldering, so skill, is not required :)

This was a super simple and a LOT easier than I thought it was going to be. I'm a 6'3" 300lbs guy myself and these tiny cars are always a pain to work on. But the 07 civic I did this job on just moments ago was a peice of cake.
Removed the 10mm from the cushions, popped em out, laid the backs down, removed the connector, popped out the panel, removed the screws and resoldered the connections and, BOOM! WORKS!
Thank you for the video it saved my friend 100s from getting this done at the dealer. The shop she took it to said she needed to go to the dealer for the part and it could costs hundreds! Glad she came to me first!
Thank you again for the video!

Thanks for the information! I banged out the replacement in under 15 minutes. Hardest part was wedging my overly-large self in that tiny back seat!

I wanted to add a follow up comment. I did this repair for a friend and decided to just put a solder "bridge" between where the white wire is and the "+" on the circuit board. It works great and have seen others suggest it's a more permanent fix
I went ahead and pulled my apart again and did the solder bridge on mine.

Thank you so much for this video and your bridged solder comment. It took me 1 minute to solder the bridge and test it back on the car. You just saved me over $100!!!

I would like to thank D Cloes for posting this video on how to fix the third light on a 2007 Honda Civic. I was able to take apart and repair the 3rd light with a solder iron in just under a total of 10 minutes with all the information he shared in this video. Thank You again for sharing and making this repair super easy and completely cost free.

It works! I didn't do the "bridge" thingy, but I just read comments. Watched the video and after one trip to auto zone for a soldering bun and some solder I was done in under 1 hour. Score another for RUclips and subscribers!! Saved this fat boy about $100.00.

Hey, D, thanks for posting this in 2014, which I needed and used in 2018. First, I couldn't even find where the bulb lived until I watched this. Then the first thing I checked was what you described, and, amazingly, my Civic had the same problem. I bridged the 2 contacts with solder, and it works fine. Thanks for posting.

I soldered the pos and neg points with lead free wire. Works. I've been driving for a while.

Thanks for this very helpful. I just did this on my wifes 2008 Civic. If you dont have a spare bench battery handy, I used a 9v to test and it worked good.

Thanks, great video. Good instruction on the soldering. I just went through the steps and the light works - feeling pretty good about it.

Just did my 2007 civic. Re soldered and everything worked out great. Real panel wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Dealership was gonna do me a favor and replace for $190.00. Yea, f that !!!

I was wondering how I was going to do the 12 volt part of this, so I decided to just solder it and see if it worked. It did. You squeeze the lock on the small part of that plug to release it. Never pry on it! (Never buy anything at Harbor Freight either)
After replacing my second one the Honda dealer suggested just leaving it inoperable as "they don't last." I'm wondering if the resistance in the solder joint causes it to heat up and fail. If it fails again I'll know what to do.
Great info, however the music could be a bit more mellow for my ears, and the video quality is not the best, which might be RUclips's doing.
Thanks for posting this! You got a like from me.

hi, thanks for posting this video. Can you or someone help me with this problem please: I replaced the side brake bulbs (both were dead) and now the brake light goes on and stays on all time only when the headlights are on. When the headlights are off, the brake light doesn't come on when I pres the brake. I checked the switch at the brake pedal, it seems OK, looks like new. I am not sure when the side brake lights died, but after I replaced the side bulbs as described above, my third brake light died. Any suggestions/ideas? Thanks.

That's an odd one....I googled it and someone suggested and it was actually the fix that they had purchased the wrong bulbs for the brake bulbs. Can you verify you replaced them with the correct bulb? Here's the link I was reading. honda-tech.com/forums/honda-crx-ef-civic-1988-1991-3/brake-lights-stay-but-only-headlights-2764132/
