Kris about Shel Silverstein in an interview in 2006: „...Shel was a friend of mine from the start - he just hung out with scruffy songwriters - me and my friends. All the establishment in Nashville were breaking their necks to get him to do things they were into. He was writing for Bobby Bare, Dr. Hook and many others. He was still a cartoonist for Playboy then."
Well, young Kris for the intro verses, some newer pics for the final ones and some scenes for the story between...
Hope you'll enjoy the song and the vid...
The scenes are from the movies
The last days of Frank and Jesse James (1986)
Trouble in mind (1985)
Wooly boys (2001)
A star is born (1976)
and a tiny one from Pat Garret and Billy the kid (1973)
- all available on DVD...
The Winner
by Shel Silverstein
(the original song had 20 verses, but I don't have enough characters for the info box here to add the ones that Kris left out...)
The hulk of a man with a beer in his hand looked like a drunk old fool,
And I knew that if I hit him right, I could knock him off that stool.
But everybody said, "Watch out -- that's Tiger Man McCool.
He's had a whole lot of fights, and he always come out the winner."
But I'd had myself about five too many, and I walked up tall and proud,
I faced his back and I faced the fact he'd never stooped or bowed.
I said, "Tiger Man, you're a pussycat," and a hush fell on the crowd,
I said, "Let's you and me go outside and see who's the winner"
Well, he gripped the bar with one big hairy hand and he braced against the wall,
He slowly looked up from his beer -- my God, that man was tall!
He said, "Boy, I see you're a scrapper, so just before you fall,
I'm gonna tell you a little what it means to be a winner."
He said, "You see these bright white smilin' teeth, you know they ain't my own.
Mine rolled away like Chiclets down a street in San Antone.
But I left that person cursin', nursin' seven broken bones.
And he only broke three of mine, so I'm the winner."
He said, "Behind this grin, I got a steel pin that holds my jaw in place.
A trophy of my most successful motorcycle race.
And every mornin' when I wake and touch this scar across my face,
It reminds me of all I got by bein' a winner.
Now this broken back was the dyin' act of handsome Harry Clay
That sticky Cincinnatti night I stole his wife away.
But that woman, she gets uglier and meaner every day.
But I got her, boy, and that makes me the winner (?)
I got arthritic elbows, boy, I got dislocated knees,
From pickin' fights with thunderstorms and chargin' into trees.
And my nose been broke so often I might lose it if I sneeze.
And, son, you say you still wanna be a winner?
You gotta speak loud when you challenge me, son, 'cause it's hard for me to hear
With this twisted neck and these migraine pains and this cauliflower ear.
And if it weren't for this glass eye of mine, I'd shed a happy tear
To think of all you'll get by bein' a winner.
Now, as I kick in your family jewels, you'll see my left leg drags,
And this jacket's kinda padded up where my right shoulder sags,
There's a special part of me I keep in this brown paper bag,
And I'll show it to you -- if you want to see all of the winner.
Now, you remind me a lot of my younger days with your knuckles clenchin' white.
But, boy, I'm gonna sit right here and sip this beer all night.
And if there's somethin' that you gotta prove by winnin' some silly fight,
OK, I quit, I lose, son, you're the winner."
So I stumbled from that barroom not so tall and not so proud,
Behind me I could hear the hoots of laughter from the crowd.
But my eyes still see and my nose still works and my teeth are still in my mouth.
And y'know...I guess that makes me...the winner.
He put this togethrr in less than a week. Great human, great American, great dad, and one of the best country singer songwriters ever.
I wasn't sure what think about this song when I heard Kris Kristofferson sing the first line ...
"a hunk of a man with a beer in his hand" and then I heard the whole song and I think it's the best country song ever written Shel Silverstein is amazing!
Kris you are the WINNER!!
Kris does an awesome job on this !
Sure does. Maybe because it fits so well with both his priciples and his wit. (And that gorgeously imperfect voice)
DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!!..................THANKS
This is the first time I have ever heard this and I LOVE it. I also love KK. They certainly do not make them like this anymore, shame.
I LOVE Kris Kristofferson!!!
Do you really
Ohhaw
I love you too
Wonderful song.... ALWAYS LOVE Kris's voice.
pure class Living legend Kris
Nobody tells a story like Kris.
Yeah Ricky you going to Shelton's a p**** just like Lance and Kenny
u just can't find great music like this anymore
Only one Kris. Perfection.
Bless him for this acknowledgment to her.
When I was a kid, we used to love his(Shel Silverstein) books "A Light in the Attic", and "Where the Sidewalk Ends". Back then I had no idea this man's influence on popular music in the 60's and 70's. Kris is also another under rated song writer who had a large influence, especially in country music. Good stuff man:-)
StormLaker1975 Amen
I don't think Kris is underrated, too famous, well known and successful. Net worth is upwards of 200 million.
I wouldn't consider having a songwriting legend award aka the Kristofferson Award as being underrated!
This man was never under rated quite the opposite one of the greatest singer song writers of all time
I've only heard Bobby Bare sing this. I love both versions.
Me to until tonight.
These are the real lyrics. Bobby Bare edited it to be more family friendly.
@@jameskuntz3065just thought the same thought. Tense. No water places can be that way.
if I didn't know better I'd say he wrote that song, good job Kris you sing it like you own it. and when he sings his songs nobody does them better
oh, Kris- love your voice forever! And to think Shel Silverstein wrote this song....wow-great message to wanna-be big shots
Shel was a musical poetic genius, both white and black and everything in between, good and bad, same as humanity, just out there for everyone to see. One of a kind!!!!!!
Kris the country music poetic genius and a legend in his own time. Yes, one of a kind!
@@juliekroeger3625 Kris didn't write this. Shel Silverstein did. The guy who wrote "The Giving Tree".
Crouchin on the outside.
They should live forever.
Kris K is simply a huge Country Legend and Genius! Everything he writes, sings, turns to Gold!! Love this Guy! Thanks For this FANTASTIC GENUINE Country Music!!!
Simply brilliant .. don’t get no better 😂
he's simply the best
Well hell Sherlock I know I'm way better than Stone Cold Steve Austin don't you know
Yeah and you ant the people who keeps arguing with me saying I ant kris kristofferson
Deborah caral finely aguing with me every day and Terry Adam Burroughs and morgan grace wilson.
And I never wanted to retire
Love you Kristofferson
A legend.
kris k will someday be aprisated as one of thje best of allllll time a real poet
5454ken He has always been that, writing and women and living his dream, before that he already HAD a great. career, but he threw security away to do what he wanted, and I am so grateful he took that gamble in the mis fo late 60s! HE IS TRULY A WINNER! RARELYsings other writer's songs, but he nailed this! A TRUE AMERICAN, may he be happy and stay well, and CAN NOT wait to see what he hasn't released yet.
5454ken He has always been that, among other things that mist folks have no clue he has done. A real man, a ladies man, actor, boxer, Rhodes Scholar, singer, songwriter, Captain in the Army, helicopter pilot, bartender, and who knows what else? Misdiagnosed and then found out it was lymes disease. He is a true ,talented AMERICAN, and thank GOD, he never went to teach at West Point, BEFORE he quit the army, to be a janitor at Columbia Records! You did really good, KRIS! OTHER than JESUS, my brother, who also writes poetry and songs, thanks to you, and since his birthday is next week, Keith Richards; well, thats my main list if HEROES! JESUS 1st, Sam Cohen, 2nd, Kris, and Keith Richards will be close to a tie---- however, Kris accomplished one helluva resume! But Keith, you are the man I admired first, besides Sam ! JESUS, you are going to be #1, always! But it was later in my life BEFORE I realized that YOU WILL ALWAYS BE THE FIRST!
Love Kris and REALLY miss my Old Friend, Shel! Shel, your wisdom and guidance was invaluable in helping me live my life!
My Dad had a friend that was just like Tigerman McCool. Every time we saw him he was bruised, cut or healing up from something. He always came out the winner though.
Great song and a great video you've made thanks for posting it. Kris IS the real deal, anything from hippy to badass vampire killer & Shel was an amazing writer & poet.
Thank you for your brilliant video, you just made every clip fit the words perfectly. Kris is magic and every time he performs he's definitely "The Winner".
there are still a few that are true to country but not many, that makes me sad.
Polishing maintenance coordinators or weee in trouble
KK shd publish all his songs or include them in his biography. He cld most definitely come up with a poetry book n it would sell like hot cakes n he would be or soo much more appreciated.l Kris to bits n more ❤️🇨🇦
I agree 😉
@@biggestkkfan1506 nudge him gently, Tina, tell him his fans have made this suggestion.
I wish I'd learn mysteries in history all my life or at least long as I got elders with shelders
what do you mean what happened to his voice ,he is still out there singing and doing it well he is 80 FFS don't you know .Love his mind and his will to keep going

Gotta Luv This Song..Sooo True.. Happiness.m🤯💐🎭♀️♂️
I keep coming back to this great song ! In this rotten world I was never 'the winner' either.
Kris is coming to Ireland on January 25, 2016. Check out Ticketmaster Ireland ☺
+biggestkkfan Sadly, I'm still not in Ireland & can't be there at that time. Any dates for mainland Europe ?
+IRISH ROVER AND THE CREW I don't know of any. So where do you live?
+biggestkkfan I'm still stuck in southeastern europe : (
+IRISH ROVER AND THE CREW What country there? :-)
Generally speaking, no one does Shel Silverstein better than Bobby Bare ... but IMO this is an exception. Like all good songs (OK, like most) "The Winner" makes a significant point, and when KK sings it, the words rise above the merely comic.
Glad to hear Kris is still alive :-)
lov this version , Bobby bare nailed it , well written shel
Joe Jr west ham United theres a special part of me in a brown sack.
thats best version.
i wonder what that special part is?
Love the song & all the clips - thanks!

Great songs about Tigerman the winner.
So mote it be!
The best. Superb.
Every young man should here this once
Kris is realy really good in this, as a diehard Bobby Bare fan....
Glen I love Bobby Bare too
Glen Me, too.
who's gonna fill their shoes? country music today is nothing like it was then.
no one. theyre all getting old....
We're all getting old too. Kris & Shel are two great songwriters Godbless them all from Auntgranny
Joe LeMier there's a generation of sissies in this great country with a sense of entitlement who have many a, 7th place trophies that will fill those boots. because it's their right...maybe I'm getting old..
i can sympathies with you on that entitlement, not one of those lazy MF's want to work for any thing, worth any thing
often tried to write a come back for that song...whos gonna fill their shoes...and all i ever come up with...is no one...God bless them all
I watched you when I was 7 years old. And I was taken then, I am taken now. I am 46. You are hot, and soo worldly worthy. Omg. love u Kris.
Many thanks for this nice Shel Song by Kris. Best wishes from France. Jo Luttringer
Thank you. Best wishes back from Germany :-)

Ooh, yes, he sure was
Quanto mais vejo o trabalho desse artista, mais me apaixono...
Bobby Bare was 1st I ever heard this tune
Never heard this before. Great
I love this song by Bobby Bare, Kris does a great job on it as well.
I wish Johnny Cash had recorded this song. It’s perfect for him. Kris did a good job, and so did Bobby Bare. Sheldon Silverstein wrote A Boy Named Sue and this song has that same sort of wit. Silverstein was a great songwriter. Sylvia’s Mother is another of his great songs.
Kris!!
that old guy was me with much less wear and tear at the age of 14 when I decided to do the same thing when someone challenged me to yet another fight. I grew up fighting and the more asses I kicked the more I was challenged. It didn't take me a lifetime to figure it out that all that it accomplishes is more damage to the body and no gain other than false pride.
But the bigger point I think you and others miss is the "spirit" in that old man.
Winner's have "spirit" the challengers don't.
The body is only a vessel and so when body is wrecked you still have the spirit that made you a winner.
I love KrisKRISTOPHERSON
Best man ever tell them to kick rocks Love you
yeah, I agree with you on his voice :-) And thank you...
I thought I was his biggest fan.
Kris....you were a changling. Your beard and dark hair made you so handsome.
Fun then later
Thank you for watching :-)

No contest, it's Kris.

BRILLIANT.
They don't make good music like this anymore.
sometimes you are long way better simply by not playing at all.
if you've never heard Freakin at the Freakers Ball Album by Shel Silverstein you are truly missing out!
Shel wrote most of the early songs performed by Doctor Hook & The Medicine Show. What a brilliant writer!
Thats the story of my life

so what are the words of this song all about then?.
Boxing I think
Bam Dogwood I believe, though I could be wrong, that it's about a rough/rowdy/older man talking to younger man explaining to him how he got all his scars from barroom/parking lot fights while drinking. To me, he seems as if he had to do again, he might not be as short-fused. At least, that's the story I have in my mind when I listen to the song.
