I love the look created. I was wondering if you had every used a brayer to roll over the wax paper. This may save your fingers in the future. Love this technique!
Thanks for sharing this awesome technique. I love all paper technique. Where do you store the paper after you embose it? And how long does it last Tnks
Shabna Anwar Thank you! I don’t think parchment would work as well. It is much thicker and more rigid than wax paper. Maybe plastic wrap? If nothing else, try it out but use plenty of cornstarch on the wafer paper and on your fingers. Let me know how it goes :)
Thank you so much. have you ever used wafer paper to cover cake dummies. I will try it using the paneling method. Especially with large dummies when you spend so much time rolling out fondant. I have also heard that luster dust mixed with vegetable oil can colour wafer well. I tried and it also work. I really love this video can't wait to texture my papers. Thank you so much
Elaine Rhule Thank you for your thoughts Elaine! You can absolutely cover a dummy with wafer paper. And you can skip the frosting. I’ve done it just using pins. You can panel the dummy, or section the top into strips and fold toward the center over the edges. Also, you should be able to apply the luster dust straight onto the paper with nice results x
Le Michel I applied the wafer paper using piping gel. I demonstrate this application in another tutorial. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/tYmQDm9Ekak/видео.html
Thank you so much, this is a great idea. I assume that you coat the wafer paper with a light layer of piping gel before you put it in the buttercream cake?
Hamideh Orra It might be worth trying the foam roller. Just make sure to dust it a little to avoid any tears. At least it would be a good start. You might still need to use your fingers to really capture the texture
I am using vodka in this tutorial. My guess is water would achieve the same, but need a little more drying time. Either way, just spray a little with a fine mist x
You simply remove the paper. It hardens so it comes off easily. I find that guests are usually curious about it so I’ll put a small piece on their plate along with their cake - and warn them that it tastes like nothing 😂 A short demo on deconstructing a wafer paper cake is a great idea! I’ll put one together the next time I have the chance. I haven’t seen anything out there that shows this x
Great video! I would have liked to see you apply the wafer paper to the buttercream. Did you spray it with water in order to wrap around the cake? Did u put the cake in fridge first to let BC set and put gel in cake or W paper?
Hi Michele! You guessed it. The buttercream cake was chilled and piping get was lightly brushed onto cake. Happy to answer any other questions you might have 😊
Hi! I’ve applied it to meringue buttercreams successfully, but not crusting buttercream like American buttercream. I imagine it would be fine on ABC if you apply before it crusts. I’m not sure about whipping cream because it’s softer. If you try it, let me know how it goes x

Hello- I really enjoyed your tutorial. Why didn't I think of this??? Just a thought-why not try a sponge instead of wearing out your poor fingertips? I also think Paper Potion or one of the other brands might help also. You really inspired me!
chrisfoster13 I’m not sure the sponge could get into all the little grooves, but would be worth a try. I have paper potion, but honestly, it’s not necessary for this technique. And it’s $$$. The paper has no trouble wrapping around the cake. I find that the water actually conditions the paper enough to work with it. I’m ready to give this technique another go. More experimentation!
If you cover the embossing plate and wafer paper with a piece of soft foam, then roll a rolling-pin firmly across this will have it shaped in a few moments.
With several different types and weights of paper, although admittedly, not with wafer paper yet. (Have only just found out about wafer paper.) I have arthritis so embossing by hand drives me to experiment with simpler ways to try things. It's worth trying different types of foam or felt, but even just pressing with a pad of soft cloth can do it. If the embossing plate is very soft an flexible it may need a soft layer underneath as well. Instead of the rolling pin you can use a craft-press (cuttlebug or Sizzix etc) or a bookpress.
Caroline Hawkins Makes sense. Thanks for the fresh ideas! Wafer paper is an interesting medium - many pluses and minuses. I’ve had hand surgery since creating this tutorial so...
Hi! Have you eve tried using Paper Potion instead of water? I will keep your wafer paper flexible after spraying it.Water makes it hard and crispy, and more prone to crack
Dora Moreno I have some paper potion, but i have not used it yet. I’m thinking that if the paper is too flexible with the potion it will not hold onto the pattern from the texture mat, if used for this technique. If you give it a try please let me know how it works!
Edith Salvador as I recall I used vodka. It dries quickly. In thinking about it now, water might actually be a good choice if you want more time to apply the texture. The trick is to use just enough to get the job done. Too much water or vodka runs a greater risk of tearing the sheet. Here is a link to paper potion. It is useful for conditioning your paper if you need flexibility. But I have to say, I’ve had my bottle for about six months and have only used it once. I find that water works very well for me in the work that I do. www.countrykitchensa.com/shop/sprinkles-decorations-toppers/wafer-paper-potion/50/749/1057/649853/
HI! I love the technique! Thanks for sharing. I have a question: what grade of wafer paper do you use? I have O-Grade and it seems it´s way thinner than the one you ´re using.
Lorena Gebrie Link to the paper I used for this project. www.amazon.com/dp/B00P1HRWG2?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf But I just saw this on Amazon. Double thick. Can’t attest to how it will perform. Connie Kimbrell hmm. Good question. I’ve made edible fabric with wafer paper. When I did, I applied the mixture for making edible fabric to wafer paper that was curled and crumpled from having colored it. When I made edible fabric from those pieces the paper remained crumpled. So I’m thinking it would hold the texture. Give it a try and report back!
Make sure your textured mats are rigid, like plastic. I tried to do this process with a silicone textured mat and it didn’t work as well, but it might have just been my particular mat.
The particular mats I used can be purchased through Amazon. Link below. These mats are more expensive than others, but I found the patterns have a nice depth to them so the paper can really capture the texture. Some are quite shallow and results are not the same. Wow! Is an understatement love it👍did you say the cake was buttercream... what are the results covered with wafer paper? Thank you for sharing a new technique😊
Yes. This is wrapped around a buttercream cake. The paper may warp slightly when applied to buttercream, but with the texture it makes little difference. Hope you try this. If so, please post a picture!

Agusta Sister Maybe so. I thought saturating the paper more and laying it on the mat might make it easier, but you’d probably end up with a very curled, stiff sheet. I’ll be experimenting with this technique more. For now it seems the only way to create a nice, deep impression is with pressing it into the paper. If you discover an easier way please share!
