- I love working with wafer paper, but it can be tricky. I'd been thinking for months about how to make the gorgeous David Austin Rose using wafer paper. I finally came up with some ideas and tried them out last week. Fortunately I decided to record my work so I can remember how to do it in the future - and so I could share with you.
This flower requires some time and patience, but well worth it if you're looking to make something super special for a cake. This flower was for a cake for my mom to celebrate her 77th birthday.
You can find the LIST OF SUPPLIES needed in the introduction, as well as some helpful tips.
This tutorial is divided into sections to make it easy for you to revisit steps if you need to.
- Making the center (0:48)
- Making the petal clusters (inner petals) (2:22)
- Assembling the inner petals (7:33)
- Building onto your inner petals (10:12)
- Filling in the gaps (11:30)
- Making the wired outer petals (13:18)
- Adding the outer petals to your flower (16:50)

Brilliant tutorial!! Just starting to play with wafer flowers..you make it look doable! Thanks
Fantastic work! So talented
Suzette Montano thank you!! x
Hi, thanks for sharing this very detailed video. But at the end, I'm not sure if the last outer 3 layers were all wired? Or just the 1st layer shown in video and then last 2 layers pasted on the wired layer?
Em Mad4Tennis all petals are wired! Since making this flower I have designed a different method that requires only the center being wired. Outer petals are attached with water or vodka. Results in a rounder flower as well. Would you be interested in a tutorial demonstrating this method?
Can you do a tutorial on how you made this style of cake. It looks beautiful
Rochelle Emard thank you! This cake has been wrapped with wafer paper that has been distressed - torn, and brushed and highlighted with bronze luster - then applied in pieces to the cake. I have so many tutorials in mind to make!
Thank you for clarifying. I was wondering about this technique also.
Very helpful. Thanks for this. Is it only vodka you sprayed to attached those petals one by one? Does it not come off easily? Hoping for ur reply. Thanks 😍
Yes only vodka. You can use water if you like :)
Hello. I have watched the video over and over again. It’s so brilliant. Thanks. Can I make this flower like 5 days ahead of time?
Oyindamola Abdulkadri Absolutely! I still have this flower in my vault.
Cutting my circles manually already. Will share a picture when I’m done.
Oyindamola Abdulkadri please do!! I’d love to see the finished flower.
Hello. I’m back. My attempt came out beautiful. Don’t know how to share the picture here. Could you please send me your email address so I can send it via email?
Also, how can I keep it?
And i hope you'll put what colors u used in dusting. Thanks 😊
Le Michel I used a cinnamon brown petal dust and finished it with bronze luster dust.
Awesome tutorial. Do you have a video for the cake on this video? 😊 Thanks in advance.
Charissa Madronero Hi Charissa! I do not. I can tell you it is finished in distressed wafer paper :)
excellent job however can you please tell me more about colors that you used? thx
Elham Vafapisheh Hi! Thank you. I used brown petal dust and a little bronze luster to give it an antique look.
Too complicated using wire.
Elny Widjaja I have since made one using no wires. A much quicker process!
