If you had a romance with Ash in ME1 and hook up with tali in ME2 and ME3 Ash will comment on that. Tali will say something like "Nice to see you again." and Ash responds "Are you sure about that?" and glares at Shepard. I think this is just awesome consequent writing.

I love it when Shepard and my own reactions completely synch-up, really gets you into the game. The dialogue writers we're downright geniuses imo. x)
James is underrated. He's got that perfect mix between goof jarhead and amazing soldier.
Hes got the same struggle as Kaidan and Ash. Put up against such cool and colorful characters he seems bland by comparison but I like James a lot too.
James is more fun to listen than Kaidan, for me Kaiden was the most Meh character in the first game, at least James is not a balls sucker like Kaidan.

He had a good story and a good plot. But he was just kind of shoved in there for three, there was no build up and he was definitely up against more than he could handle. He didn't have the same two entire other games to build off of like some of the other crew

Yes, they are. From Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 3, those two have always followed Shepard despite the danger. Even Liara and Wrex are up there as Shepard's second best friends.

James is so hilariously awkward when his "tough military guy" front doesn't immediately work, and I'm sad more people don't appreciate his character. He *has* a personality if you bother to talk to him! No, he's not as amazing as Garrus or Tali (who the fuck is?) but he's still an interesting character.
If nothing else, we can all agree that every other individual party member is better than Ashley in all three games combined.
Ashley really got the short end of the stick for 3, she's great in 1.
I didn't mind Ashley's character development in the Mass Effect series. She can be really coy and purposely holds back on revealing too much too soon but some of the way she reacts can be understood based on the context of the world she is living in. She's still better than Kaiden who I thought was the most underdeveloped companion in the whole series.

Garrus can always find another girl for him. It's not because there is a last minute hookup between them that he should be forever alone if you chose to romance Tali.
If it makes you feel better, “Citadel” lets you play “wingman” to him with a female turian.
For Garrus, he is the Turian brother to have if you got a male romancing Tali. For Tali, she is the best sister to need when you romance Garrus with a woman. In either case, those two are still at the top for most Loyal and best friends ever.
If you play Femshep it’s the opposite Tali is the third wheel.

My favorite interaction on the dreadnought comes from Tali and Garrus, is if you play FemShep that romanced Garrus. After the "chocolate" lines, Tali says something to the effect of "watch out Shepard, someone's trying to steal your man"

Tali was always my favourite among all the LIs and I accidently made her commit suicide on Rannoch during my first playthrough. Haven't fully recovered from that until today.
Having played through that, I can see how easy it could be for that to happen. I was a coward and looked up the best outcome, didn't want to make an avoidable mistake I would regret.
