- The decision to use stainless steel tubing for Supporting the Hard Top has taken a while as we have been trying to decide whether or not to use the Targa Mould we have for this job.
The Extra work and old fashioned look was enough to steer us in the newer more modern approach and allowing for a much cleaner look.

I am so amazed at how much you two get done on this huge project, I can’t imagine having visitors too.
She is looking grand. I'm sure its wonderful to see the folks stopping by and I bet its a nice to show her off in "Real Time". But don't worry about it. If anyone can understand its your viewers and patrons!.
Again, she is looking beautiful!
You are doing a brilliant job. I am amazed after all these years of watching you following every step to see how well you do everything you touch. As frustrated as you can get understandable, you do the best you can. If anyone was to buy your boat in the future they would be getting the strongest Cat built in the world. Im proud of you Roscoe.
Having a boat to be designed exactly how you want it is something not many sailors get to experience. Comfort is where it's at.
Everything is looking beautiful and I love the stainless roof supports. Don't forget to put a couple rod holders on the back side of those supports! LOL!
Now I understand how to build a boat.
First you cast a really solid hull with extra reinforcements and so on.
Then you saw, cut and drill a whole lot of holes everywhere.
Step three is then to repair all the holes and build new reinforcements and stuff.
I dare not even think about what happens next! 😊
Good luck with the project, both of you!!!
That helm station is looking bloody lovely in place - well worth the large hole you cut in your boat! Also, the stainless supports look like just the job… Great work all round!
I get the swearing at the job when it dont go right, most people get frustrated when it just wont go. Loving the whole thing as it comes to the bling end of the job. Cheers for letting us look through the porthole into your world.
There is a lot of swearing mate, appreciate you watching the build.Ross
Nice job on the helm, looks “bully for stout”. After she’s done you will struggle with where you want to spend time on the boat because there are so many places on the boat that are so cool and fun to hang out in. I’m guessing you’ll be hanging out on those sugar scoops dangling your feet in the water a whole bunch. Beautiful craft well built, well done sir!
After you sweat and struggle and swear and then you’ve cracked that bit of the jigsaw , that big grin makes me smile too . Well done mate .
I catch up with you every other month or so and am blown away with the progress and the depth of forward planning that you include in your amazing videos. Good luck mate.
I still can’t believe you only have 24k subscribers. Love your build and channel. You should have 10 times the subs
LOVE these glimpses of the future ..its really looking fantastic .
Fame is a 2 edged sword 😎striking a balance with safety and a healthy production schedule you have to make hard love sometimes .
all the fans will understand because we all want you on the water enjoying yourself .
Hi guys, I agree with you 100%. It’s a worksite not a playground and it’s hard when people come and want to chat to you over things that interest them and every time you take an hour away it’s an hour away from getting the boat on the water keep up the good work. Love your videos Cliff from Logan city, Queensland, Australia 🇦🇺 From the big island
Boxing Day sacrifices, helm station & roof supports. Looking sleek.
I dunno Rosco, I think boat builders are a few bricks short of a full load. Fiberglass, wood, steel they seem to spend the first three years of the project making sure everything is smooth, no blemishes and water tight and then the next three years drilling and cutting big holes in them!!
Magnificent work, that helm station looks like it was molded in!
hi the cat is looking very good grate work ,👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😄😄😄😄😄
Thanks mate
Roscoe - that was a tremendous amount of progress covered in this video. Helm looks excellent. I do very much like the hard top supports and the key to their success will be the accompanying stainless fabrications, although as four months has passed since filming - I suspect they are long done.
I was pondering how the boat build evolves throughout. The initial hull build is a sort of linear workflow and then as you fit out it gets increasingly chaotic and ‘interactive’ with two steps backwards to continue forward.
You are both doing a great job.😀👍⛵️
Your fiberglass work is the best I've ever seen, that is one beautiful boat.
Brilliant work Mate
The helm station looks amazing, and those stainless tubes too.
Take care.
All the best.
Looks solid to me. The cockpit area turned out really smart looking. Coming. Together now.
Thanks Ash, we are really seeing some massive improvements fast and furious.Cheers buddy.Ross
Such a huge effort Rossco! A truck I’ve learnt over the years is when putting anything against the pvc ducting is to put a wooden block in at that area that you’re glassing and it will keep the shape
I was surprised when I heard you let people just stop by to check you out. You have been quite gracious with your time . Good on you. I wish I had the time to make it to your part of the world. I would definitely buy you a beer.. thanks sharing.. 🤙
Another great video Rossco - your enthusiasm is always infectious. Well done mate .
Suggestion only. Another build i follow limited visitation to i believe just saturdays. Still allows people to visit in person, creates an excellent excuse to tidy up the jobsite once a week and its a scheduled day to take a break.
Amazing work you do. Cant wait to see you enjoy it on the water.
Yep,in that case Doug and Betsy lived on residential site for Seeker and could manage it that way.I am on an industrial site which no longer allows visitation with induction. Our current insurance will not cover it either.I had a rather scary incident that made me rethink the whole visitation situation, tbh, the site is not suitable for visitors ,never really was.The distracted tion factor is a whole bnother issue when I am working with such chemicals and tools.Cheers Ross
Completely understand on the visitor's situation.
So I guess I'll cancel my flight to Australia. Lol
@@ctown6971 Yes you can,sorry.
Great video mate
I am sure you and your lovely wife will find great joy and comfort on your magnificently built yacht
I have been a keen watcher for quite some time. As it reminds me of the days when my wife and I built a 10m crowther design. We lived on it for 5 years. Wonderful times.
Fair winds mate 😊
Rossco, that is the nicest way I can imagine to tell everyone to "bugger off, mate!" I know you would never say that, but visitation is counter productive to your mission to build your boat and get on with cruising! We are extremely fortunate to be able to follow what you do with the length of time you have to spend filming everything you do! I always thought a simple head band GoPro with 256 GB SD card and 3 batteries is all you need! Do they make one small enough to fit inside your ventilation helmet?
Your helm station is a masterpiece! I'm glad I got to watch it all as it would be difficult to believe it was hand made otherwise!
Once you launch, and go, I predict you will have problems with the "paparazzi" hounding you for stories! Let's hope not!
We'll be right mate.Love the visitors, just need to knuckle down now with a final push for a bit.Cheers Rosd
May not be a high performance cat but whenever there are two sailboats it’s always a race❤
Dear Ross, Looking really good. Why not have a socket welded onto the plate that is fixed to the transom to support the posts. The post can then just drop in with a Bolt to secure. Saves having to make the hole in the seat back larger Regards from England
You are making a fine blue water ship. I hope you continue with segments once you are sailing.
I like the look. Keep on keep’n on.
Thanks for sharing
I am absolutely amazed at what you have accomplished so far! You are an amazing craftsman and boat builder!!! I know y'all will have a great boat when you are done! Hope you have many happy years of sailing! I wish I had your abilities and determination!
You back must be made of steal! My hands would be shaking after about 2 minutes of being in most of those positions that you were in while putting those tabs in!
Great work so far that's going to be a strong and beautiful boat all the best
Thanks Piet, we really appreciate you taking the time to watch our build.Ross.
Well said, I work from home and have the same issue people not understanding I'm at work. All the best X
I feel your pain.It is a challenge not knowing when I can get a good run at things Cheers Ross
Yes I can understand your frustration& concern
Building Motorsport cars has in the past attracted my mates and the curious to drop in
Funny enough I was in your area about 10 months ago and out of curiosity I found your workshop
It was a weekend and sure enough you were in there plugging away
Thought it best to just leave you alone
Cheers
Mate you need to weld a plate on each end of your tube for mounting so you can just slide the tubing between deck and roof ,good luck cheers from California
You are amazing with your skills and determination.
Steel pipe can be cut and put back together in the flanges you are having made, only only one flange needs to be water proof and you having 8” of vertices play makes life happy
New posts look fab looks like you've got strong base to mount them in the tops tops need to be some super strong wide brackets so much lateral movement possible will be fascinating to see what eventuates
Ross to be quite honest I would have thought you would have said from the start of the build, that you where not accepting visitors. Keep up your infectious enthusiasm.
Cheers Paul,I have always tried to show where I am to, to anyone that was interested, I love showing off the build site, problem is it has effectively increased the build time by at least 6 months over the course of 5 years and that is hard to accept when paying rent, working, and the youtube at least another year of time, crazy when I add it all up, then having to work weekends and nights to make up for it and I am not getting any younger.Rossco
The helm station looks great 👍🏻
Ross, I very much understand your position on site visitors. I have a large wood, metal and leather shop and I had to stop letting anyone, but the customer in the shop and the customers are restricted to just a couple of areas. There are so many safety and security issues, there is no way to control the environment. Insurance cost sky-rocket here in the USA if you allow anyone into the shop working areas.
BTW: Have you set a launch target yet?
Instead of a single solid pole, put the bottom section in, have it end in a flange at the top. Then make the top pole have a matching flange at the bottom and through bolt them together.
yeah nicely thought out
I wish the Davits could have been incorporated and give you a much cleaner look Rosco. On the build site I totally agree with you.
Now I've seen ut I understand how you are going to attach the Nav Station . Top Job there. It really looks good and I LIKE the Stainless poles.
Hi Ross , how about thru bolting a piece of stainless angle with gussets either end to the rear bulkhead, you could put a spigot on the horizontal plane to locate and mount the column, you could still use it to drop your cables through as well.
Nice! I like the stainless. Clean lines.
It will be absolutely AWESOME mate.
Cheers Rory
Thanks Rory ,appreciate the support, pardon the punn.Rossco
nice work rossco. Keep it up!
Thanks Steve.
Looks fantastic! A little concerned with the forces the polls are going to endure as the she flexes, bit worried they may torque more than you might imagine. Causing cracks etc. The clean look is awesome, but do think about the flex.
Hi you might what to put a drain in the rope store on your helm station so wet ropes cause an issue . I love your work
Russ get yourself a carbide blade for that Stanley I usually get the Irwin ones you wanna talk about good cutting
Nice work.
Love the channel, Love the build, Great looking boat, sense of humour is brilliant. Probably to late given Vlog release Vs actual work but, would there be some benefit to splitting the supports by way of a threaded connection at the flange on the settee area base plate. the benefits would be that it gives you service options in the future. Whilst being structural it allows removal at some point in the future. Yes there could be "sealing concerns" but easily remedied. There may be a cost factor but that may prove beneficial at some point in the future. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Andrew.I am still considering my options with the supports. The flanges I have are perhaps too wide for the setee top and may need to modify it all in any case.I get the serviceability idea though.Stay tuned. Thanks for taking the time to comment.Ross
You got to protect yourself Rosco and get the protect finished.
... nicely done ... those stainless posts, to my mind at least, look far better than the targa ... simple yet elegant ... yes, nicely done ...
Thanks mate.
Hi Roscoe, just wondering if it would be worth getting the stainless fabricator to add a grab rail to the side of post to assist move up or down the sugar scoop when it's a bit choppy. Love your drive and commitment to the boat a lot of people would run out of puff by now
Hi Ross. Have you considered a beam between the 2 new SS poles holding up the cockpit roof? You have the front to back support covered. Just wonder if side to side support at the back would be prudent. If you box it could provide opportunity for wire chase and traveler support as well.
Your cat must be at least three to five times stronger than spec. It is overbuilt and that is a solid safety margin I would have to believe. You are to be commended for all the years of hard work put in !
Thanks so much ,I love hearing from you every week.Stay tuned it's gonna get interesting at last.Ross.
Mate, you need to keep the boatyard safe for yourself and family. With the roof posts make sure you cap the bottom of the posts so they don’t rub a 100mm hole through the deck. Add a Tom and a Jerry style 50-60mm mouse hole at the base to get all your wires through that you need. Everything moves on a boat. She will squeak and talk to you and you will get to know what’s going on and what’s not normal👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 the helm looks a million$$$$.😎😎
Thanks Nick The posts actually don't bottom out as the chamfer panel drops away before they meet the rear bulkhead.I hear you on the squeeking and will make sure there is plenty of access for wiring.Am now thinking plumbing up through as well for outdoor shower at the top of them .Ross
Is there a drain for your rope box? Don't have to worry about me dropping in on you, it's too expensive from Florida to Australia.
Wish I could visit, wishing you good times
Thanks Gordon.
When Rosco says to piss off, I ask which direction! 🙂
I've got a 4m length of 76 x 2mm 316 tube in the garage that I'm tripping over if you need some more.
The exterior aft mounting plate could be slightly thicker than needed and add mounting points for eg a cantilever shade and possibly power cable outlet for any sundry day / utility craft battery charging jump starter or shore power, (electrical port and starboard)teeing off the conduit since your using it as a solar run anyway.
Many boats have the mast stepped on the deck. Below deck there is a post to transfer the load either into the keel or into a structural bulkhead. It would make sense to do the same with your posts.
They are bolted to the structural bulkhead at the stern. There is a welded fish plate on the upright poat that is through bolted so in effect that is the same as you indicate. My Mast is also supported by a Mast compression post on the central bulkhead.Cheers.Ross
I can understand.
Cut the pipe in half and tig weld together then polish, this way all the plates etc can be done off the boat.
'Visitor Policy' is a good move. I worked for an Aero-Space Company making parts for the Space Shuttle and Commercial airliners, visits by French and Japanese investors were necessary for our business, but disrupted production for days and were a logistical headache. I'm surprised you waited this long, but I'm sure most will understand the need for safety and uninterrupted work progress. Crack on Mate! If the makers of $750,000 Cats finished their craft like yours, they'd have to charge $1,000,000...
Should have made a compression post. Flange on the compression post attachrmex to the rear bulkhead. A flange on the top of the compression post. A flange on the bottom of the overheads support post.
Bolt the overhead post flange to the upper flange on the compression post.
No oblong holes to repair. Plenty strong. 😅
Its probably to late now but if you made a frame under the fibre glass that goes down to the bottom of the cavity and cut the stauncheon to the exact size and sandwich the fibre glass with stainless base plates
Also when you have the base plates welded on to bolt through the transom you will not be able to get it back through the hole you drilled
I do ss parts for boats . What i do is get a sheet of 316ss polished , then i send it to my laser guy when i need parts made to my drawings. Sand and polish the edges.
So it’s built for comfort not for speed
Where have I heard that before………..?
Looking good Rossco
Too funny mate Cheers Rossco
I know you are months ahead of this video...but I think that each stainless support could have been made in two keyed pieces ...one above the settee and one below...would have made installation much easier and once bolted together..would carry the load below.
This video just saved me from thinking it was Wednesday.
It is a bit like that these days, like grounding day here Tim.
slow and stedy is best you get to engoy the time
Definately slow and steady mate.
The project is starting to look like you could sell the house and move in. Think of all the commuting time you would save and the money you would free up to spend on the boat! ;->
Cheers Peter, not quite choosing the drapes, but will get there. Ross
⛵⛵
Why don't you make the posts in 3 pieces one piece from the target to the deck one piece from the deck inside with a fish plait on top and a bracket the bolts to the back of the boat inside this would make it a lot easier to assemble and make true
Well the 2nd pipe went in lot easier
Why would people just rock up unannounced, just odd.
I live your name mate.
See what happens when you get interwebs famous lol. I am sure people will understand and I think your DM's and messages will become more frequent...lol I'm sure your have bigger problems to tackle, go get them young man!!😅😅
It’s the 120th day since you filmed this one, you must be into woodwork fit out by now OR your u been a slacker 😅
I wish mate,120 days of work later and I am in fairing hell.Haha.Getting there Gaz.
@@LifeOnTheHulls I think Zac is you’re answer 😂
He has just headed back to nz with Ellen thus Wednesday not back till December now.
I promise not to visit until you've splashed and taken on provisions and beer. Hurry up, though. Edit: Also, you really show us everything regarding the actual building, but you hold back so much on all the swearing. I will pretend to speak on behalf of everyone here and ask for more swearing.
Why not ask for fiberglass professionals to come visit you Rosco and work there arses off for a few weeks 🤔
That is a great idea mate, but pretty much finished the bulk of the glassing,it's sanding and fairing now o me.Yuk work.
Still impressed!
Rosco tell ‘em to piss of you should tell them this is a industrial work area no a day care centra
Do people really want to see another boat or do they want to see the crazy Aussie that is building a boat himself? Barnum and Bailey could've made a fortune dude ;) Come see the horned children and crazy aussie for a nickle ;) When do Aussies think Christ was born?
That is too weak construction. That is more or less a tupperware cat. Now start making firstly the hulls strong enaugh.
You clearly haven't seen the hull build videos.
Build a support out of lego blocks😅
unfortunately ya a fiberglass wasteland isn't really a place to be for fun lol
Another great video Rossco - your enthusiasm is always infectious. Well done mate .
