Jason Bateman leaving was detrimental to Silver Spoons, because from what I remember, Ricky’s friends were just a group of generic “‘80s kids”, and you didn’t really have a standout character like Derek for Ricky to interact with. But on the other hand, it let Bateman go on to “It’s Your Move”, which gave us that memorable “Dregs of Humanity” episode (which is really the only thing I remember about it, but that’s enough).
There’s another story that went around back in the day…. It was actually Ricky Schroder’s mother that got Bateman off the show. He had become competition for Schroder and it was Schroder’s show, he had first billing. So when Bateman was let go, producers told him they’d find something else for him. And even when that something else “It’s Your Move”, didn’t last, he went on to “Valerie/The Hogan Family.”

I was also a fan of Silver Spoons and was disappointed when his character wasn't on anymore but I followed his career after he left and was glad to see how well he did afterwards. He has had a steady career of being in great shows and movies throughout the years so maybe it was a good thing he was let go.

The 80's was a time for diversity, and a ahow focused on the 2 rich, white, boys was falling out of favor. Including a lot more Alfonso Ribeiro made the show far more diverse. This made much more sense for the times.
I always watched this show, I loved it. Being too popular might be the worst reason I have ever heard to fire somebody!!!!! Bateman was the best part of the show!
"It's Your Move" was a great sitcom. Pretty subversive for kid-oriented show on NBC in 1984. From the same writers that would later do "Married With Children".
The train set was awesome and I was so jealous of it. I also like Batemans character, thought he was awesome in every scene and missed him when he left. After that, never heard from him again and must have drifted off into obscurity. 😂😂
“Being too popular “: Maybe they thought so, he certainly was an outstanding Actor, even then [ having done a season of “Little House “]. But it’s up to the Producers , and directors, writers, etc, to actually give direction to the overall show. Personally I would like to have seen Derek having some serious issues where we could have seen, perhaps some insecurities, and perhaps insight to why he was the way he seemed. But, both actors continued their careers quite well. [ both were good enough to be able to play off of eachother, making for excellent performances from them. But , that’s just my opinion. 📻🙂
I am almost 45 years old and I remember silver Spoons it was a great show and love it so much that I got all the years on dvd. And I think they should have kept Jason Bateman he was good in the show and 1 of my favorites and if the show was on now they would have kept him so I don't think that was right to just let him go. And I just subscribed.
Even though IT'S YOUR MOVE was gone after a single season, midway thru the next season, he got a great part in VALERIE/VALERIE'S FAMILY/THE HOGAN FAMILY then took off from there. I noticed on the later sitcom that he was a good straight man, doing a nice slow burn thru indignities, as I've also noticed from David Cassidy when he was on THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
It’s Your Move was a great sitcom. Should they have fired him from Silver Spoons? As a compliment to Jason Bateman, yes, I think they had to. His magnetism would have made it the Jason Bateman show just as Urkle did to Family Matters 8 years later.
I remember “It’s Your Move” being hilarious. According to an interview with Jason Batemen, it was canceled because it influenced too many young boys to do bad things. I was one of those kids. lol
If he was so popular, the move should have been to spin him off onto his own show with that character, not a new unrelated show. That's likely what would happen now.
Getting rid of Jason Bateman completely was an unnecessary move. They could have given him freedom to do other work and still make occasional appearances or tweaked his role. Many of us really loved the Derek/Ricky relationship...as a child, I got bored of the Edward /Kate blossoming romance 😅

Sounds like an inspirational story....The one who was let go is, as far as I know, is still an A-list actor forty years later.
Long time no see ❤
Its been a while since I have done a shorter video for sure!
Fired for being TOO Popular!?! That's Hollywood for ya!
LOL! Yes it is!
It's a wonder Henry Winkler wasn't fired.
Ricky and Jason's mothers were enemies behind the scenes.
Ricky was driven and savvy.. and understood the rules of power 😮 Jason wished Ricky well and they remained friends I think
Note that the ratings declined after Jason was fired.
Bad move for all involved.
I feel like his character was the most interesting aspect of Silver Spoons. I watched Silver Spoons reruns in the 90s (80s born Millennial).
Imagine Family Matters let Urkel go because he became too popular. Thats the thing with Sitcoms, you have to evolve the show on how the audience responds.
Great video!
Thanks!
I was also a fan of Silver Spoons and was disappointed when his character wasn't on anymore but I followed his career after he left and was glad to see how well he did afterwards. He has had a steady career of being in great shows and movies throughout the years so maybe it was a good thing he was let go.
Another great video!
Thanks!
Jason on SS was unbelievably good actor…for his age…..sharp….funny…..charming af ..in fact Erin Gray would be charmed by him so much ……well, let’s just say she felt “confused”,that’s another completely different story in its self…
The 80's was a time for diversity, and a ahow focused on the 2 rich, white, boys was falling out of favor. Including a lot more Alfonso Ribeiro made the show far more diverse. This made much more sense for the times.
Well done! Great video!
Thanks. Hope to see you and Dave again in August sometime
I show that show to my kids so they can see what my teenage years were like. I loved It's your move. It was Parker Lewis can't lost stole the concept.
It was always obvious why he left imo. He out performed everyone on that show.
It sounds like something he'd put on his resume to explain a hole. "I was just too popular!"
lol!
*he got his own show after called Arrested Development* ⭐️
One of my absolute favs!!!!
Decades after 😂😂
I watched "Silver Spoons" for one reason and one reason only, the lovely Miss Erin Gray.
I actually liked its “ it’s your move” then the actor that played the boyfriend. I thought him and Jason had good chemistry on screen.
El era más popular que el protagonista, como Carlton Banks que opacó a Will Smith
After the show moved from Universal, it was on the same soundstage as Facts of Life.
I always watched this show, I loved it. Being too popular might be the worst reason I have ever heard to fire somebody!!!!! Bateman was the best part of the show!
Excelent video!
Thanks!
I thought Ricky was cute.
But now that I'm older I realize Bateman was cuter. Probably why they got rid of him.
“Being too popular “:
Maybe they thought so, he certainly was an outstanding Actor, even then [ having done a season of “Little House “].
📻🙂
Its a good opinion
Spoons is our fav show. Always love it. I always wondered why Leonard was replaced by whats his name
Better for Jason ... no looking back 🙏
Jason Bateman, good actor. He could have been a leading actor but I guess he got typecast because of his roles as a kid.
I was a HUGE fan of Silver Spoons growing up. It was the having a ridable train IN YOUR HOUSE, that won me over. I mean, what kid wouldn't want that!?
it's your move was a really clever and fun show it was very entertaining and original.
I did watched silver spoon in the back in the 80s of course!!! I was teenager that time
They could have kept him, all they had to do is cut back on his screen time.
Soooo, they got rid of Bateman because he was too good?!? 🤯 Something doesn't make sense about that.
Agreed!
Jason Bateman was fired because he was a better actor!
I remember that train going through living room.
Getting rid of Jason Bateman completely was an unnecessary move. They could have given him freedom to do other work and still make occasional appearances or tweaked his role. Many of us really loved the Derek/Ricky relationship...as a child, I got bored of the Edward /Kate blossoming romance 😅
One of the worst aspects of politics is being too well liked.
And, no good turn goes unpunished.
Rickey and Jason made a cute couple.
Thanks for clarifying why Jason Bateman was let go. I had always thought that maybe he didn't get along with Ricky Scrotum.
I thought that was kind of a strange reason why they let him go
Back then there was so much cocaine flowing through that business the producers couldn’t make sober decisions. Bateman totally stole that show.
I heard that he was just dying to do the critically-acclaimed teen Wolf 2 movie. Shocking how that didn't win an academy award.
LOL!!!
There should have been offscreen footage of Jason Bateman's Mother yelling at Ricky Schroder's Mother for getting her son fired.
