Jason Bateman leaving was detrimental to Silver Spoons, because from what I remember, Ricky’s friends were just a group of generic “‘80s kids”, and you didn’t really have a standout character like Derek for Ricky to interact with. But on the other hand, it let Bateman go on to “It’s Your Move”, which gave us that memorable “Dregs of Humanity” episode (which is really the only thing I remember about it, but that’s enough).

They had a final episode for Derek. His character moves away and he gets to say goodbye to Rick. Thankfully it wasn't one of those situations where the character just vanishes without explanation. Which I think proves there were no hard feelings involved.

I loved Jason Bateman on that show! He was perfect, and they should never have let him go. I watched his show "It's Your Move" (and think I still have a couple episodes on videotape, lol). But unfortunately, it didn't last long. I don't think it caught on or something. But he's always been very talented, even as a kid!

    • @millenniumman75
      @millenniumman75 9 месяцев назад +3

Actually, from what I heard, the demise was the opposite of catching on. The fear was that Bateman's character was so popular on It's Your Move, especially with the Dregs of Humanity episodes, that kids would replicate the antics done on the show. Parents wrote letters to the network. The result was beginning with the 14th episode to the 18th and last episode produced, Bateman's character was caught by his mother and he wasn't allowed to scheme the way he did. The toned down version had the show cancelled. The team behind It's Your Move would launch Married With Children two years later - with David Garrison also appearing on that as Steve Rhoades.

Ricky Shroeder wasn't a comedic actor and it showed big time. Zero comedic timing and he just came off so corny. Bateman was out acting him in their scenes together. I remember reading an interview of Ricky saying he was never comfortable doing comedy and it was a sigh of relief when Silver Spoons got cancelled. Alfonso Ribiero was awful on Silver Spoons. Couldn't act worth a lick. By the time Fresh Prince of Bel Air came around, his acting improved drastically and gained comedic timing.

@@RetroJunkie94 You're exactly right. I've seen clips of Ricky on Silver Spoons and he was god-awful. Cute, likable, and charismatic, but a god-awful actor. Jason was an ok dramatic actor on Little House on the Prairie but nothing special. He hit his stride on Silver Spoons and had ALL the right stuff, and it was flat-out embarrassing to have Ricky be so terrible and Jason so good. Alfonso sucked as bad as Ricky as it was more comfortable for everyone.

I still remember an ep where they were going to do an Ice Cream shop. Derek proposed they combine their two names for the Shop’s name: “Der-Rick’s.” Rick was like, “It would still be named Derrick!!!”
Watched the show all the time. All the guys at school started wearing the jelly bracelets when Rick did. 😂
I don’t blame them for wanting to give Erin Grey more airtime though.
I did follow Jason Bateman to “It’s Your Move.” I only remember one ep where Bateman creates a fake rock band using skeleton puppets. Not a great show but Bateman’s “Arrested Development” and “Ozarks” are two of the best shows of all time.

Schroder once admitted in an interview that his education was poorly maintained. Doing so many projects during his childhood hurt his basically non existent schooling. By the time of Silver Spoons he couldn't read or write or even spell his name. His arithmetic was just as bad and his money had to be managed for him.
I'd guess Bateman couldn't even believe what he seeing in Schroder. By the time Sixteen Candels came along studios were hiring teachers for young actors. That film's cast did have school sessions.

I honestly don't see any proven malice on
the part of the people behind "Silver Spoons" or any injustice committed by them against Jason Bateman. He was on their show from 1982 to 1984. People noticed his rising star potential and offered Jason his own starring sitcom "Its Your Move" during the 1984-1985 season. After it was cancelled, he worked on the 1985 film "Can you Feel Me Dancing ?" starring his sister and produced by their father. Jason landed his part in the sitcom "Valerie" aka "The Hogan Family" during 1986 and the lead in the movie "Teen Wolf Too" during 1987. A very fruitful and productive

This is totally not true. The reason was because Ricky's mother grew jealous of Bateman because he was becoming the star of the show and outshining Ricky. This has been reported since the 1980s. The show was to evolve around Ricky and his mother battled TV heads to axe Bateman.

Very true. I am friends with the cousin of John P Navin and I've heard stories about him and his time as an actor and he said that Ricky had the stage mom from hell, Navin was in a couple season 1 episodes as Ricky's arch-nemesis Ox, and after the taping of his final appearance, the producer took him aside and said that he wasn't going to be invited back because Schroeder's mother felt that he upstaged Ricky and that was a no-no. I've heard that Ricky's mother wasn't a fan of Corky Pigeon either

Bad move to let him go. To popular is a nice problem to have. You go with who is hot not your art. This is T.V. Theres no room for pride. Could you imagine the producers of Family matters saying let's dump Urkil and stay true to the original premise of the show.

@@chazarcola7639 pride as in, being so stuck on what you are SURE is great, and your 'vision', that you are immune to other ideas, or how your audience receives things, or collaboration, etc.
for instance. the original star wars was so great because they let the actors collaborate, change some lines, add some lines, and offer other ideas. if it had remained the original version (often times due to stubbornness/conceit/pridefulness), it wouldn't have been nearly as good or done so well.
it's that adage of thinking you are the expert in everything and too good for other's opinions and above even constructive criticism. you actually can remain true to your vision while also taking on constructive crit. (movies, TV, writing, etc). it's how you grow and hone your craft. but a lot of people just get butthurt or refuse any of that. aka: pride.

Giving him his own shown let him go almost unchecked and was even better than being a mischievous sidekick.

    “Being too popular “:
Maybe they thought so, he certainly was an outstanding Actor, even then [ having done a season of “Little House “].
But it’s up to the Producers , and directors, writers, etc, to actually give direction to the overall show.
Personally I would like to have seen Derek having some serious issues where we could have seen, perhaps some insecurities, and perhaps insight to why he was the way he seemed. But, both actors continued their careers quite well. [ both were good enough to be able to play off of eachother, making for excellent performances from them.
But , that’s just my opinion.

During my time in the service in the late 80s, I missed a lot of tv so I never saw The Hogan Family, but I started to be a fan of Jason Bateman through his film career. He’s actually one of a large group of actors doing numerous movies together; Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader and JK Simmons have done numerous projects together interchangeably.
And Arrested Development is on my list of top 3 sitcoms of all time.

I've heard a lot about this show. I am friends with John P. Navin Jr's cousin (never met John as he lives in another state but his cousin is a great guy I've known for years so I know way more than anyone needs to know about his career because Jake and John grew up together) who told me that after John's second appearance on the show where he played Ricky's arch-nemesis Ox, he was told from the producer that Ricky's stage mom didn't want him coming back because he got too many laughs in the second appearance and that she felt he upstaged her son (the episode where he takes Ricky to court and pretends to be injured). I've also heard she wasn't fond of Corky Pigeon whose screentime was drastically reduced and eventually phased off the show as well.
Jason truly got the last laugh anyways, he's had Ozark and Arrested Development and quite a few successful movies behind his belt while Ricky loves to harass grocery store employees for following guidelines and regurgitates conspiracy theories online when he isn't arrested for abuse. A shame because I used to like the show growing up

They wanted to give him a spin off, but the creator had final say and blocked the show runners from doing it. They made "It's Your Move" in it's place. Which beyond David Garrison as the adult lead, felt like a precursor to Married with Children. As the Spoons and Move show runners later went on to create the only hit the young Fox Network had. I dunno, maybe Tracy Ullman counts
