I’ve spent literally thousands of hours behind a drum set as a touring musician. You study the body language of the people around you and that usually tells me if the feel is right. The bass player actually turns to the drummer and gives him a “look” and immediately you can hear the groove slow down slightly and he finally puts it in the pocket. All it took was a look. This is stuff that can’t be taught but learned over countless hours.
