in japan, it seems japanese people spend a lot of effort in high school but relax in university.
but in america, it's sort of the opposite. americans tend to study the hardest in university

Because entrance exams? Pretty sure the same thing around asian countries

I believe it's the exact opposite. Their Highschool curriculum do not cover the contents for the entrance exams to universities. They have to go to cram school for that so high school is pretty much useless. Also, they have to pass all the students regardless of their grades. It's pretty bad actually

It depends on the major. For STEM majors, you have to put in major time and effort, while liberal studies less so.

US also has a high drop out rate in College which I think is a really good thing. It accepts lots of students and gives a lot of them chances to make it rather than to reject their applications and never give them a chance. Some majors are extremely challenging and is worth every penny while there are majors that are easy and aren't that useful after college.

Those are asian americans youre talking about. In america other than asian americans they relax from middle schoo,l highschool and no college degree,. They become construction workers, plumbers or worst homeless drug addicts.

For learning English I would recommend watching a tv show or RUclipsr in English, it’ll help with learning new words and how people talk. I just found your channel, I’m hoping for your success!

You are doing very well at speaking English - well done! I recommend listening as much as you can to youtube channels which focus on teaching the English language as this will help you to improve your listening and speaking skills. Also, keep posting videos like these and choose subjects you really enjoy speaking about. That enthusiasm will come through in your videos and help you to keep motivated. Ideally, if you can find an English speaker who is interested in learning Japanese you could help each other by sending draft videos for pronunciation feedback.

I’m sure you’ve practiced very hard, I’m from the us and when most of us learned to read as kids we were told to sound out the vowels(A.E.I.O.U. And sometimes Y.) First and then the consonants (other letters of the alphabet you know them because without a vowel added these letters they can’t make words) hope this is helpful. Oh and don’t feel you have to read quickly you’re not letting anyone down by learning ok.

I'm surprised because my education in America has felt lackluster. And everyone works very hard because there is a ton of busywork and we don't know how to relax

I was actually surprised when last year I was deciding whether to try to apply for a Japanese university as well as UK ones, when I did I was overwhelmed with a high amount of specific documentation and criteria required just to apply alone. And when the result came back, they wouldn't even reply with why they rejected me (unlike the UK they atleast tell you the reason)

It really depends on the university. I am disappointed by the amount of low effort students at my university. Most students do not work very hard and slack off. There is a small community of hard working students. I think in general your analysis is true though.

I’m in Canada so it might be different but honestly 90% of classes are just pure useless crap and on top of that grades makes no difference once you go into the working world as your diploma is just used to put aside candidates more easily. Most of the time school is just something to help you conform not actually be good at anything and the real learning comes from experience, most graduates are completely lost when they enter the workforce. University is mostly a system made to revigorate itself, with that, it’s hard to be motivated.

I'd say the most efficient way to improve your English is to have as many conversations with native speakers as possible.

the best way to get rid of strong accent (if you want to)
    - know that you have one
    - practice the sounds that are unique to american english that nonspeakers have trouble with. the
(ERRR as in FUR) (EAR)(EHHHN)(APP-UHL like apple)(AYE)(AWW like Awesome)(IHHH, like lizard)
(UHHH as in Love , Not ラブ)
try not to think of it like using japanese character anymore otherwise the english will sound japanese.
you cannot use the same mouth movements you are using now, you have to practice changing the mouth movement. make the mouth and jaw movements BIG. It will feel very strange and look funny at first. watch someone say words and repeat after them.

I don't think this is specific to Japan, I think this is a global phenomenon, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. People are supposed to make their own decisions i when they enter college, some may want to focus on academics and some may focus on other parts of lift, as long as they understand that they are responsible for their own actions, it's perfectly normal

Is university a place to study or to network, especially when all the plain knowledge you learn in the class can be learnt online or at the bookstore? The graduate school is where new knowledge is born, and in general has nothing to do with common college students. For a person who takes the path of getting a job after graduating the college, networking is a legit and sensible option, though I doubt they have ever thought about that and the direction of networking can be completely wrong.
