Oh my god, I didn't know that the "Mary & Max"-team had a movie coming out! Now it's rocketed to one of my top spots! I hope you're right about the Academy shifting gears in this category. I still remember the sour feeling after the article about the 2014 awards with comment from the voters who only vote for what the kids see, and one of the anonymous voters who criticized "these two obscure freakin’ Chinese fuckin’ things that nobody ever freakin’ saw" about the Japanese "The Tale of Princess Kaguya" and the Irish "Song of the Sea". I hope those people have retired and new members are more reflected in their choices. I am torn about "War of the Rohirrim". I would've loved for it to have a unique style, like "The Peasants". But that's just judging on the pictures. Hope it will look and be great. I think you bring some valid points about anime and I wonder if this could be the big animation snub. I loved "Flow". I feel like this one could sneak into the top 5 for its universal message and engaging story.
I'll never forget that anonymous Oscar ballot. The "obscure freakin' Chinese fuckin' things" comment hurt my soul. Then to watch Princess Kaguya lose the award to Big Hero 6 of all movies, it just felt like voters weren't even watching the movies. And that happening a year after Miyazaki's retirement movie (lol) lost to Frozen. It just felt like voters were never going to take animation seriously. The Boy and the Heron beating a sensation like Spider-Verse last year, and Elemental not even being in win conversation (10 years ago, a Pixar movie with mixed-reception would have been a contender by default), makes me feel like the tides are changing. Maybe I'm being a bit too optimistic, but The Boy and the Heron wouldn't have won a few years ago, I'm certain of that. Something's different now.
I loved it! It will almost certainly win the award, and I'll be happy for it. I also loved Memoir of a Snail, but seeing both of the films, this is just Wild Robot all the way to the Oscar. I don't think anything can compete.
I had this in for a while, I love Sylvain Chomet. Last I heard they were waiting for 2025 with this one. Here's an article saying they're aiming for late 2025: www.animationmagazine.net/2024/05/cannes-the-magnificent-life-of-marcel-pagnol-animal-tales-of-christmas-score-international-sales/ Next year, this is top 5 for me EASY.

Thoughts on the chances for the Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol? Aren’t they completed with filming? That director has been nominated before
