It's always good to get experience but even those that have experience got trained first, then they applied what they learned plus what they picked up on the job to gain experience. I would say get training first.

Thanks Germain. The System Owner is responsible for the POA&Ms but the ISSO is responsible for developing the POA&Ms. In some agencies or organizations, the Assessors might create POA&Ms, especially for vulnerability scan findings

Can I study this on my own, or do i need to registered for a course in order to take the exam?

You can study on your own by downloading NIST 800-37 but it is better to take the course because it covers a lot and you can get your questions answered if you need clarity

Does a SCA mostly work by contract? or can you actually work at one company and assess for the rest of your life lol?

A SCA could be employed by a company and assigned to a client/project/contract. Once it ends, you will rotate to the next contract
