    Hi, Will: It is dangerous any time, anyone puts a camp stove on a fabric covered shift gel foam mattresses, they aren't impervious to fire. You might think about buying or building a small collapsible wooden table which can store away when not in use, to prepare food on and cook on.

    • @WillsWhereabouts
      @WillsWhereabouts  3 года назад +2

      Great idea Linda

    • @tonuhot
      @tonuhot 3 года назад +2

      I immediately thought this when I watched the video.
      Here are two ideas that came to me:
      1) Have wooden cover the size of your kitchen slide out drawer. Use this cover/plank as a table. Put it on the bed and then the stove.
      2) turn the board you have put pictures on, into a fold down table. You can sit on the bed to do the cooking and also keep the window half open right next to the stove.
      I think 2nd one is a better idea.

    Hey Will, great vids man!! Just a note on the gas. At night when you are sleeping, if gas leaks you can get a layer of gas sinking to around the height of where you will be breathing. This can give you carbon monoxide poisoning and can kill without you even knowing it. Two options, keep the gas/burner in an air tight container once it’s cooled or store the gas outside over night. It’s more prevalent in cold weather. Stay safe dude and keep on moving, inspiring stuff!

    Hi, another person doing the same as you, places a fire blanket under the gas stove to keep a bit safer. I noticed you turned the gas on quite a few seconds before using the ignitor, therefore the gas could be leaking causing it to flare as you said it did. Turn on gas right before ignition instead and open windows etc for fresh air. I personally would use a little table preferably outside but inside if I had to. Happy travels

    Ha you stayed in my town. There are a few places bit further up on the downs you could park over night for free. Often campers parked up. Love the simplicity of your set up and especially the front seat that turns around. I would defo put a board under the gas stove and get a co2 detector for peace of mind just incase as super dangerous in confined space.

    Haven't read all the comments but i
    I was you I would be inclined to have a large fire proof blanket to place on the bed beneath the stove, not because of the heat but to stop the fat splashes going on your covers, you only have to look at your cooker top at home after making a stir fry.
    I just love watching the whole process of seeing the journey unfold and the inside of your tiny home is brillian
    Take care and stay safe

    I just was thinking about your setup, you can put a pvc soft glass table cover on your bed and a mdf plate on top to put your stove on. It would help with the smell and grease from the food and should be a little bit more safe.....I hope

    I did some work for a customer on his vehicle that he uses like you. I fitted a second battery and a slip charging system to give power for lights etc without risking discharging the starting battery. A swivel unit was fitted to the passenger front seat to allow it to face backwards for use in cooking etc in foul weather. A locking tough box was fitted for securing laptop camera wallet phone etc in the front footwell and hidden from view behind the carpet. Wire mesh vents that could be fitted into windo arpeture that offered secure ventilation the window was wound up to secure in place,removable when not needed. Extra button fitted in rear to lock/ unlock the doors without setting the alarm. Button in rear to only open / lock tailgate independent of other doors. Diesel fired night heater, Chinese from eBay,works well with good temp control.

    While cooking like that probably isn't the safest it looks fairly stable. I'd be more worried about grease/oil spatter on the sheets. I'd probably make a small folding plywood base that covers an area around the stove by about 12" either side just for caution's sake...saves your sheets and would provide better safety for cooking than straight on the bed

      My Mom grew up on a farm and she talked about how they would take a heavy rock wrapped in fabric which had been heated by or in the stove fire, which would keep them warm all nite.
      Rocks can store a lot of heat. I wonder if a rock like heated on the exhaust manifold or by the car’s heat vent could be used to keep warm while sleeping.
      People living in vans often use a propane buddy heater to keep warm but the carbon monoxide is a concern in small tight places.
      My first choice for heat would be to take me along if I was near by ;) cheers (without mind machine warping alcohol lol)

    I love your videos. Personally, I'm bored to death with all the slick, glamourous vanlife videos. They aren't realistic. Ok, some of vanlife/camping is fabulous, but much of it involves all the mundane daily activities, just like sleeping in a house. Your videos are realistic and interesting. I love seeing what it's really like driving around looking for a place to sleep, cooking in your van, and dealing with things like going to the bathroom. You toss in enough lovely drone shots, in my opinion. Also, your simple set-up is refreshing and encouraging. All the time, effort, and resources some people put into their campers to make them all artsy-fartsy does annoy me sometimes. Your approach is 'throw a bed in the back, grab some food, and hit the road' -- fantastic! And you crack me up with all your funny little disasters, like doing the splits to tape up the curtain that subsequently fell off. And the cooking on the bed. That's hilarious. Thanks for the videos.They allow me to have stealth camping adventures vicariously, until I can get my own shit sorted out. Have fun!

I had bad luck with having my cooker on the cooler. melted it a little bit . But i also forgot the rack or the other part that is for your cooker. Its a must to sit the pot on. :)

    Hey Man,i'm an English Sth Londoner who retired to Rural Saskatchewan Canada 5 yrs ago.I discovered your Channel tonight,Canada is excellent for van life,though stupid cold in the Winter,but i'd rather have the cold,the snow and Sasquatches :0)than the poxy rain tbh ;0).I've got a huge 4WD pick up truck with a removable camper roof which is on the list to be converted into an expedition truck ;0)keep up the good work Brah,its nice to see you driving through and doing your shit/stuff ;0) in my beloved home town and country,keeps me connected ;0)I'm thinking maybe us subscribers should issue you some stealth camping challenges of specific places to camp.So heres one for you Lingfield East Surrey,i lived there for 14 yrs before i emigrated.Some nice little spots to hunker down and a couple of nice boozers as well eh,i'd recommend down by the church and graveyard,its near a nice country pub and no one will fuck with you cos the graveyard is proper spooky ;0).If i was back in "Blighty" id probably do a RUclips Channel on stealth camping in rural British Villages tbh,country village walks meets stealth camping with descriptions of amenities pubs good places to eat,and hunker down spots for the night etc etc ;0)

      You should check Steve Wallis channel out mate.He's a total Canadian nutter and popular.He does "Merch" as well,something to think about.The "Merch" has been generated from a couple of catchphrases he uses namley "Hunker Down" and "Step 2" give him a watch,he's got some good ideas,he's funny and it will give you an idea how we roll camping wise up here in the great white North :0)

    Great video mate. I'm dying to do this. Have the van nearly finished. Always interested in how to shower as I would need a shower and a coffee every day to make me feel good. I watch a few of these type of videos and I think yours is the most accurate and balanced mate. Keep it up. But the way the isle of sheppey and rochester are general shit holes. Keep to the SE part of the coast. Lol

    Great stuff once again Will, really enjoy watching your videos! Very nice to see where it has gone since Nepal! And it's pretty inspiring as well, thinking about buying myself a small combo as well dedicated for trips like this. What are the regulations like in England, can you just sleep in the car on public roads?
    And do you have any plans to go up north? Cheers and all the best! Michiel (Mardi Himal Trek)

In England you just have to find specific places to stay for the night I use an app! Send me a message on Facebook if you need any help or information!
