- Official audio for the Pioneers' 1971 UK chart hit
Written by celebrated Jamaican-born singer Jimmy Cliff, ‘Let Your Yeah Be Yeah’ provided vocal trio, the Pioneers (Jackie Robinson, George Agard and Sydney Crooks) with their first UK chart since their 1969 breakthrough single, ‘Long Shot Kick The Bucket’.
Produced by the group, along with the assistance of Chalk Farm Studios sound engineer, Vic Keary, the record entered the British Top 50 on 31 July 1971, eventually climbing to Number 5 on 11 September of that year.
Partially inspired by Matthew 5:37, which states, "But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil”, the song was covered by US rock band Brownsville Station whose version reached 57on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.
Since then it has been recorded by Jimmy Cliff himself, as well as a number of other performers, most notably UB40's Ali Campbell whose 1995 cut reached Number 25 in the UK in 1995.

LET YOUR YEAH BE YEAH LYRICS
Written by Jimmy Cliff
You keep telling me yes, but you don't mean it
You keep telling me no and try to lean it
You're giving me buts and maybes
You know this will drive me crazy
Why can't you tell it like it is?
Let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, now, baby
Let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, now, mama
Because I'm on my guard and I'm watching you from head to toe
You'd better let your yeah be yeah and your no be no
You wear a plastic smile, I know by your eyes
You speak with indefinite style, you're telling me lies
You've got to face reality
What is wrong with you and me
Why can't you free your honesty
Let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, now
Let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, now
Because I'm on my guard and I'm watching you from head to toe, so
You better let your yeah be yeah and your no be no
You keep telling me yes, but you don't mean it
You keep telling me no and try to lean it
You're giving me buts and maybes
You know this will drive me crazy
Why can't you tell it like it is?
Let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, now
Let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, now, oh
Because I'm on my guard and I'm watching you from head to toe, so
You'd better let your yeah be yeah and your no be no, no

Had to come and listen to this. I was 6 in 1971, and my Mum used to listen to it all the time when she was doing housework. She passed away yesterday aged 82. I need these memories
Sorry to hear about your mom, she had a great taste to music, My mom was only 58 and she was gone, my mom she never played this songs, when I played this song toward my mom she smiled, all songs from Trojan records
Memories are made of this
I too was brought on the Trojan sound, I lost my Dad in May 2022...it brings me some degree of comfort to recall precious memories of days gone by. They life on with this music

It's tunes like this that make Trojan records such an important label.
Its songs take you back and make you feel young again.
Yes..those were the days...the '70s!!!! I remember that when I played in a band then , I wore platform shoes , bell-bottom pants , floral shirts , and sported an Afro Hairstyle ...with a Jimi Hendrix-type of cap ! Roll on '70's !!!
Damnnnnnn that was the outfit then.
I'm 78 and listened to this in the Caribbean club in Chapeltown Leeds back in the 60's. When real reggae ruled and we were happy 😊 😂😊 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My all time favourite. So uplifting. The old bones still have to move to it. Utterly brilliant.

My favorite tune in 1972 1973.
Gotta love this song.
Takes me back to my youth on the streets of Hulme and Moss Side in early 1970's Manchester , this version by the Pioneers is by far the BEST version of this great reggae song ..... the only version that even gets anywhere close to this is the song writers version, Jimmy Cliffs excellent effort.
Takes me back to the '70s...when I used to enjoy reggae music at the Havana Nightclub in Derby England!!
The good days in hulme and moss side.brilliant music.and clubs.jimmy cliff a legend.

There go the Pioneers!!!!!belting out that classic reggae.!I'm extremely proud to have experienced the reggae revolution in the '70s.remember the good ole days where it used to happen, when the reggae explosion occurred,in the Havana nightclub in Derby England?who's with me on this?
Well i wasn't in Havana nightclub , as i'm a Manc ... but i totally agree with you ..... the 70's and reggae were unforgettable, such a brilliant time.
We used the Cambridge Pub in Derby for reggae music nights in the early 70s
Yes,those were the days....the days of the Reggae Explosion in the UK in the '70s! My favourite haunts in Derbyshire were the Normanton Pub and the great Havana nightclub in Derby ,not forgetting the Rose Hill Street reggae parties.I also frequented the Roebuck Pub n Swinburne.
Thanks Barry and Mike for your comments.
Unfortunately,I never frequented the Cambridge Pub.guess I missed a great vibe!

Let Your Yeah Be Yeah
The Pioneers
Tu me dis des mensonges

Life back then was a lot less complicated
Destroy all copies of the Ali Campbell version. I'm sticking with this.
I didn't know he had covered this... Sad just sad. That man single handedly butchered more of the songs I grew up loving than any other person on the planet!
