I have this problem with the voidz where certain bits of songs just sound AMAZING, like there’s no other way to describe it. Like minute 3:30 or the beginning of square wave but they just decide to not capture that feeling and completely deviate of what they were doing, which kinda sucks.
I hope you come to England again brothers I missed out during Tyranny when you came London but nothings going to stop me the next time my wife said I can go 😊
Julian man, music is hard but this is all the same too, auto tune basic background indie beat. There are some great tracks this man has been the writer of. So I’ll respect him forever but this isn’t it man. But who cares what I think as long as you are having fun dawg. I just wish in some way you’d help rock survive, you and many other artists who have basically given up on that dream declaring that’s generic while curating lots of music that won’t stand the test of two months let alone the test of time. It’s low key sad that all the current left over rock stars want to see themselves be the last to do cool shit and write everyone else off as generic while curating iffy underground weirdo stuff with no real vibe. Just kinda sad dawg rockstars of the past killing rock because they are to hipster. Kinda lame. If you are looking for real and honest here it is man. But it’s just one dudes opinion.
Went from: “Is this it.” 🤷♀️ to “Is THIS it?” 🤔 Ok. I think I understand what happened, here… Julian wanted to cash in on the retro vaporwave trend, since he likes 80’s/90’s music, and the whole lo-fi aesthetic… But, basically his whole identity was based on being the opposite of those artists, and what those artists represented, that were popular in mid 80’s and 90’s. The Garage Rock revival - that The Strokes essentially championed, popularized, and were the public face of - was all about a “back to basics” more authentic analog garage rock approach to music and sound. It was essentially a response to synthetic computer generated music - with bands like The Hives, The White Stripes, and The Strokes, making excellent but extremely stripped down music - just like how synthwave, chillwave, signalwave, and vaporwave are a response, or a reaction, to what the Garage Rock revival did for music, (or to music) now. The pendulum always swings, but not always in your favor. Obviously, most people just got sick of the garage rock sound, (it was extremely popular for over 20 years) and felt nostalgic for the retro synthetic music, of either their own childhoods in the 80’s or 90’s, or a time that they never experienced (because they’re too young) but romanticized because it was so different. Essentially, it would be really difficult for an artist so closely associated with one style of music to make the leap to doing a style that isn’t just different - but is, essentially, a response/reaction and rebellion to it. (I get the AI inspired mixing, but I just don’t think it works. When listeners say, “I would listen to this AI generated tune, unironically.” They’re actually being ironic.) Meant respectfully, but that’s just the way it is. Though it doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of young people still interested in the Garage Rock sound. The Voidz first few singles, and The Strokes last album, were really good.
I want to add the lyrics “all the same” might be meant as a cheeky self-aware comment on this phenomenon of sameness, not just a political statement - but if there truly is “Nothing new under the sun,” why not just stick with what you’re best at? This song’s honestly not bad, but the more I listen to it, the more I think its political message might just go over most people’s heads, with not enough of a melody to keep casual listeners interested. All artists need room to grow and experiment, and you obviously can’t please everyone all the time, but public feedback can help you know whether your art resonates or not. ✌️❤
