Thank you for allowing us to get to know you! It is so interesting to learn how vloggers get their start and what inspires them. I have followed you for a long time and you always are teaching me something new! I hear that Northern Ireland is absolutely beautiful! All the best and I will stay hopeful that a new fabric shop will open up near you soon :)

I’m glad you mentioned about learning something new. I’ve been sewing for 35 years and am always excited to learn a new technique or a better way to improve upon a skill I already have. With sewing it’s all about the process. Even with the sewing fails/mishaps one is always learning. I love when inspiration and creativity is sparked. Enjoying the process and the final outcomes is what makes sewing pleasurable. Thanks for sharing!!!

If you're looking for a lovely weekend getaway, I recommend flying into Norwich, Norfolk, for the weekend. Norwich is gorgeous and there are numerous sewing-related shops and loads of antiques/vintage shops and cafes. Probably because we have an arts university here, the local fabric shop specialising in dress making fabric is really good. Plus, you have a built-in tour guide (if you would like one): me!

I so relate to your reasoning for sewing. I would rather create my own patterns than figure out whether something will fit and hold the design after I adjust the pattern. I find creating clothing patterns that are found in established clothing to work better with my wardrobe. I always buy extra fabric to make a variety of pieces that can work together.
Since sewing with patterns caused me a great deal of stress and still often does, I think learning to make my own patterns and use those patterns to fit purchased patterns has made such a difference for my sewing experience and enjoyment.
Like you, we have a limited supply of fabric stores here in the US. I am in the mid-west, a long way from great fabric stores. I do a lot of mail order. And I have a lot of fabric that I wonder what I can create from it. I can make the fabric work usually. I also relate to your insight on sewing for trends, I am learning to sew more basics and garments that are going to work over many more years.
The older I get the more sensitive I am to fabrics that don't breathe well. And feeling the fabrics does really help. I do sometimes lose when I know I can't use the fabric I bought, and I can't send it back. That for me is the same as making a garment that doesn't quite work or fit the way I had hoped. It happens but not very often and I don't sweat it anymore.
I have the first book by Natalie Bray. I want to try that pattern and make it up myself. I had to go buy a copy of her second book. Thanks for sharing all this information. You are the best.

I really enjoyed listening to your sewing story, Suzanne! I also really appreciate your honesty when you said that you do encounter problems in your sewing because I make the same mistakes. It gets frustrating and discouraging at times since I long to be an accomplished sewist. You are a great inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing!!!

I started sewing for the same reasons! And I was so sick of the lack of sizing for me. I love it,because I get to wear what I want. And I love the learning experience. It is so nice to hear from someone who understands the need ❤ I like the thrift store, because I like sheets, curtains and tablecloths to sew with. You get a lot of nice fabric for the money

Both my sisters sew for a living, but I went in a different direction with my hobbies. I make lots of knitted/crocheted bags and struggle with the lining of these bags. However I really would love to make them more often. I do watch “how to sew bags” videos and learn a lot, but I suppose practice makes perfect. I really love your videos on how to make clothing from scratch, which is giving me the urge to try myself. So thankyou. Love seeing your creations x

Re fabric shopping , there is a great utube link…..beyond the pink door……..the owner, Andrea has a lovely personality and does live utube presentations on a Sunday evening at 7pm. She is based in the south of Ireland and like Guthrie and Ghani really showcases the fabrics. Hope this is useful.

    Hi Susanne
I really enjoyed this video. Probably like many people who have been subscribed for sometime, I have wondered about your life as well as enjoying the sewing/drafting content. I know it’s better to not over share as this may cause it’s own problems. I used to enjoy the fabric stash/haul videos back in the day.

Maybe I’m misremembering but way back in the early days I thought there were material videos. Sorry if I’ve sent you on a wild goose chase. There is an Australian seamstress Janelle on “Rosery Apparel” who has hauls as part of her channel. Another of my favourite sewing channels is the “Closet Historian”. Once again sorry for any confusion from me but I hope you may enjoy these as well as the wonderful Susanne.🦘

I don’t know many people who sew anymore, it seems to be a lost art. All the very best ❣️

Couple more questions for you, just because I'm curious. What is your profession? You spoke about swimming in the morning to give you time to mentally prepare for the day, but I find myself wondering what you do during the day. Also, it seems like you sew on your kitchen table. Or maybe that was just the (wrong) impression I got from one of your videos. Do you have a dedicated space for sewing? Anyway, I sew from patterns (mostly costumes for the kids and skirts for my wife) and got into quilting in 2016 (just a few per year, so nothing crazy). But I aspire to draft patterns like you do someday, so thanks for the info on the book.
