    Hi Sandra, I have been playing guitar since 1968 (mostly finger style acoustic and some blues/rock with a bit of Celtic thrown in every now and then) but am a complete beginner when it comes to jazz. I just want to complement you on your lessons. They are clear, articulate and easy to follow. Thank you so very much for putting these lessons out for us all to benefit.

      But then again, a lot of people don't listen to originals anymore and learn just by watching YT vids. I think it's important to listen and transcribe a lot.

    Sandra, this is an enriching introduction into the complex subject of Jazz chords. As a beginner, I can follow your explanations very well, how you came up with the chord families, the E string and A string chords, the changes from major to minor and the difference between half diminished and fully diminished chords. This makes sense to me now - for the first time !!! It’s amazing how well you can explain. And your recommendations how to practice these chords are also very helpful, gave me new insights and are now my roadmap for practicing.
    To have a basis material for practicing, I bought your starter pack chord melody and starter pack II V I and I can highly recommend it to every Jazz beginner.
    Thanks a lot, Birgit

    First, thank you very much! Finally, I found the systematic and step by step way to start playing jazz music with guitar. It is a long journey to find it. I have started with some books those I bought from Amazon and Hal Leonard. However, I made very slow progress. Then, on parallel, I start searching in RUclips for learning jazz guitar. A lot of information, and I found near all of them, are good and amazing. But the problem is that I need to find one from all available that is suitable for me, who has a slow learning phase. I found you are the best. It is motivated me a lot. Thank you very much. From today, I can stop searching for other methods and focus learning from your channel. My hope, I can make significant progress ❤.

    Sandra, I have learned from you more than I thought I could learn from any other instructor. For a long time I have been stretching out my fingers by putting my opposite hand in between them and open them almost to break them. Now I can play anything, I can reach any hard chord easily. And you have become my favorite instructor in this jazz style.

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  4 года назад

      Oh, but that sounds cruel on yourself. It's usually not the finger sketch, but the angle of the wrist, why people don't reach far. Great you solved it and are free to play whatever you like now! 👏

    Sandra, thank you! I played guitar a lot when I was young, and loved it. You’re too young to remember the ‘60’s, but I played the usual R&R garage band crap (pardon me, please). I haven’t played at all for 40 years, but decided to pick it up again, and try to learn something more sophisticated. I have always loved and wanted to learn jazz chords, but they seemed difficult and elusive. But they’re not-when you explain them. If you, and RUclips, had existed back then, I could have been playing, and enjoying, elegant chords like Gm7, and Cdim7, 35 years ago. I’m elated that I found you. Keep doing what you do. As you say, “Greetings from Kansas City”.

    Sandra - Greetings from Florida. Kudos for the outstanding videos you posts. I have always loved Jazz and in high school played my lap steel guitar in our Jazz Band in the middle 1950s. We placed first place in many event with Glen Miller's In the Mood (lead on the steel guitar). After high school, I basically didn't play again until 2011 and since have been relearning the Steel and the Standard Guitar. At age 78 I am still learning. I ordered your "All of Me" and will be working on that, but first I plan to become proficient with all of the chords in this video. Just playing those chords makes some beautiful sounds coming out of my Godin 5th Ave CW Kingpin II Cognac guitar (Thomastik strings). You are tops!

    You probably aren't checking comments on this lesson anymore, but just in case, I wanted to say thank you! Very well done and I've printed the pdf for future reference. I am not an aspiring jazz player, but am always looking for "different" sounds (and to improve on reading chord charts). This helps immensly. Thanks again!

      Thanks Russell. I'm glad that you look into other genres and playing styles for new impulses. There's so much to be learnt. I have a very eclectic music taste and it influences all my playing.
      Enjoy experimenting with the new sound, my friend. Btw, I read every single comment 😉

    Ted Greene's Chord Chemistry (most important jazz chord book) talks about noticing "chord synonyms". I noticed the Cmaj7 is also am Em/C chord.
    You're a great teacher. Thank you!

      Absolutely. These are also called Superimpositions. Play an Em7 arpeggio over the Cmaj7 to get a Cmaj9 overall sound.
