    I started guitar in ‘65. Played pop/rock (garage/party) band with some passion ‘70-‘90. Took a few decades off. Have started playing again in the last few years in a oldies band. I was doing pretty well teaching more than learning from my band mates.
    At 70 I thought I would like to move into jazz/blues. I have been following you and others. It’s been following you for awhile. I have purchased a package.

      Sorry for the premature ending of previous msg.
      I’m having a hard time finding a jumpstart in to jazz. I clearly understand II V 1 or any other pattern but not familiar with jazz phrasing. I’m picking up a bit but…
      I like you style (and small hands😀 like mine) and large library of lessons. It’s large but I can’t find a “beginning” for me.
      I do need to have starting point (lesson) and progression of development. I can imagine there are others in my situation.
      I have purchased a package from you but there are places that assume I know more and places that are more basic than I need.
      Is I possible to put your vast library of lessons in order? Hit and miss utube selections are frustrating.
      Bill

    You have a real sense of teaching, Sandra. I appreciate your lesson very much. Coming from blues guitar I felt pretty lost how to get started with Jazz guitar. I looked around everywhere but it didn’t « click » for me. But with your lesson you give me a helpful framework for a very good start: the four comping rhythms, how to combine them, a few beautiful Jazz guitar chords and how to play over the A section of Autumn Leaves. And your explanations are so useful. I arrived to start. Thank you so much.

    This is *so* interesting! The insight regarding keeping beats 2 & 4 on the low-down so the high hats right through the mix is something I would not have thought about. So thank you!
    What a great lesson. Many great ideas to incorporate: jazz comping is much different than playing rhythm guitar in a classic rock setting.
    I'm grateful you explained all of the important things we need to keep in mind. And I love the syncopation. That really makes what you played more interesting than just playing the same rhythm throughout.
    Thank you!

    Very nice lesson! I just wanted to point out something: what you (and other musicians also) called Latin, it's actually Bossa Nova, and they do also have tons of variations going on! I do recommend a lot Rosa Passos, her playing is amazing, so rich in terms of rhythm. Greetings!

    • @cesarolavo

  • @edt.5118

    The knowledge is revealed. Showing how the comping guitar meshs with the drummer is like passing on wisdom. This makes practicing chord progressions much more interesting. How would the first rhythm "click" sound be played on an acoustic instrument?

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  2 года назад

      Even easier. I fobs that the /acoustic steing (but not so much nylon strings) kick even better. Same technique.

    Thank you for this very well explained lesson. Just what I needed. I've put together a bunch of 1625 progressions I figured out on a keyboard and, thanks to this lesson, I'm going to try and make them happen on my acoustic guitar. Oddly, I'm finding the right hand technique more difficult than the fretting atm. Anyway, simple question: Can anyone reading this recommend an affordable (sub £500) electric guitar for jazz/R&B comping?

  • @175epi
    @175epi 5 лет назад

    Wow, what a good lesson. So much of what is out there falls into the "You'll Never Be Able To Play Jazz, So Why Bother?" category; but your videos always give the viewer something they can use right away, in an actual tune, and sound good doing it. One of your strengths is your ability to take things that are complicated, and present them in a clear and understandable way . . .the mark of a good teacher.

    Sandra thank you so much I love all your videos you’re such a good teacher two quick questions if I may.
    For your right-hand middle and ring finger are they only playing the strings where we are holding down a note or are we including the open strings as well? I guess it depends on whether the open string is a chord tone?
    Also, does this hybrid picking style work with chord inversions where the root is not on one of the bass strings?
    Thank you so much

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  2 года назад

      No open strings. Yes, sure hybrid picking works for everything. Doesn't have anything to do with what voicing you play.

      Das freie mich sehr. Ich hab mir das Gleiche gedacht. Immer Solo, Chords, aber niemand zeigt Rhythmik. Wobei die Jazzrhythmik auch wirklich sehr schwer vermittelbar ist. Daher rate ich dir unbedingt viel hören! Und zwar nicht nur Gitarre. Bewusstes Hören funktioniert so: Hör mal in einem Song nur auf das Klavier. Versuche die Rhythmik nachzusingen oder zu klopfen. Im nächsten Durchgang konzentruere dich auf den Bass. Dann Drums etc. Dieser Tip von einem Kollegen anno dazumal hat mich so unglaubluch weitergebracht. Ich habe begonnen das Rhythmusfundament des Jazz zu begreifen und habe es dann immitiert und danach analysiert und notiert. Die letzten zwei Punkte musst du als Nicht Lehrer nicht unbedingt machen.
      Viel Erfolg!

      @@GuitarversumSandraSherman Ja, ein Thema, das viel zu oft übergangen wird, zumal man ja 90% der Zeit eines Stückes nur mit Comping beschäftigt ist. Auf jeden Fall vielen Dank für die Tipps ;)

    It's really helpful, maybe I could adapt its rhythm pattern to my jazz guitar chord progression book? Few month ago I bought it and I am just practicing sometimes those I type chords..Maj7 stuffs. And I think in rhythm playing left hand's control is important..String pressure.
    By the way I love your guitar sound. So warm and round!

      You can applay these rhythms to any jazz standard, that has a swing feeling (as most songs have, except for Latin songs). I have a video on my guitar sound. it's calles "Jazz guitar gear recommendations and amp settings". Check it out! A lot of people find it very helpful.

    YES! Great. But my Q: What do you use for background sounds? You start it with footpedal. Can share the secret, of where can I find your used gear? Or what do you recommend for (intermediate) Jazzbeginners..

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  Год назад +1

      I created Backing Tracks beforehand, I pedal invokved firing recording. But when I practice alone I use the Digitech Trii+. It's a looper plus drums and bass comping. Can highly recommend.

    Ok , this helps with my impossible. I hear the rhythms pridectably to the beat, but applying them to my guitar playing was difficult. little cooperation in movement. Is this normal with some of us? I need to loop it it very slow and practice, but I think this lesson is very helpful in application. I'm going very slow at it though.

      Practicing slow is always good! If your brain understand it, it will go into your muscle memory eventually.

    Hi Sandra.....I love all of your vids, and I have a question......have you ever done one on the song Nature Boy by Eden Abez ? I know that it’s a fairly quick, simple song, but am having trouble figuring out the best fingering for some of the chords....thanks for all you do. I looked on your page but didn’t see it.

      I haven't done a toroidal on that I've yet, but I have a performance video of it on YT. Just search for Nature Boy Sandra Sherman and Puddles Pity Party.
