I'm a pianist and I been practicing arppegiating the diatonic seventh chord up the scale in every major key for about a month and a half and I'm starting to notice some cool patterns. Diatonic seventh chords are really the way to go imo.
Here's an easy way to find the chord that is a tritone interval away for substitution as shown starting at time 13:10 in the video. A tritone interval is half of an octave. Since going once around the Circle of Fifths and Fourths traverses an octave by the time you get back to where you started, the tritone is halfway around. That's the note (or chord) that is directly opposite to the starting note (or chord). For example, looking on the Circle you can see that Db is directly opposite from G, so the tritone substitution for G7 is Db7. Likewise for any other chord you want to substitute. The Circle of Fifths (and Fourths) is magic in so many ways.
Thank you ! This is awesome and exactly what I've been trying to find for years. A humble request - is there any way that you can provide tabs of these progressions in other scales? Thank you, I'm very grateful.
Thank you LJS Brent! I've learned so much watching all your stuff over the years and paid for very little. I took copious notes from this video and have so much to work with now!
Boa sorte! 👍🏽
Thanks for this video. My teacher says the same, you will get to know them because the progressions repeatedly come back in the standards. I am still puzzling how it benefits my play supposedly I have them memorized (or if I can recognize them by ear). Do you have a video on that?
Good stuff. 🍻 (I’m not a grammar snob but.. I do think confusion can be avoided. It should be noted that people often confuse the “with” and “for” when talking about substitutes. Be mindful of this this. E.g. when using a tritone sub for the ii- in C: “I subbed the D- with an Ab7” = correct. “I subbed the D- for an Ab7” = incorrect. “I subbed an Ab7 for the D-“ = correct. “I subbed the Ab7 with a D-“ = incorrect. Hope this clears that up. 👍)
didn't the ink spots commonly use the [I #idim ii V] chord progression? i swear it sounds like every ink spots song LOL. but no, seriously this video has been very informative. thank you for making learning jazz guitar a tad bit easier for us.
It's altered with a #9, which is the same as b3, so I guess it's kind of both dominant and minor 7th at the same time? :D I definitely hear the #9 better than the 3 in this audio too though
@@grammarpenguin hmm I currently only hear the tones F, G and Bb. Back then I must have assumed it was an Gm7 because the Gm7 quality remains even though the fifth (D) is missing.
I don't really hear the B distinctly either, but you can tell there must be something there because the chord sounds a lot crunchier than the shell voicing of Gm7 would. His index finger is on the B on the D string, so the full chord is G B F A#: G7#9 with the 5th omitted.
I don't get it!! Why both Dmin7 and F7 are 2? I don't understand what the numbering is based on! Please somebody explain this to me, I really want to understand!😭
15 years in 15 minutes.. cheers
Quite the compliment, thanks!
Is it that hard?
Hard? No. Time consuming and requiring many hours/days of dedicated practice? Oh hell yeah.

Pure condensed well explained with wisdom. Excellent summary and a refresher of concepts. Thanks!
Thank you so much!
You sir, are a wizard.
Awesome sequence of learning the basic Jazz progressions! Tri-tone sub pops right out of descending Dom 7ths in a blues turnaround!
That's true - especially if we are talking minor blues! Thanks for watching

Great video! The only thing I would add is the backdoor progression as it comes up a lot. (or was that covered in the vid...)
Compact! Lots of good info condensed into a short clip! It is a good thing this is available to review.
Glad you found it helpful Rob!

This is terrific
Great concise summary of the key jazz progressions. Is there a pdf file or printout available for downloading which tracks this specific lesson.
That guitar sounds really good! Smallish, good for my arthritic shoulder. Is it a Jaén? Thanks!
Hey thanks! It's a custom built Victor Baker guitar.
Con mucho thanks! I really enjoy your channel!
You're killing it Brent! Thanks for all the great and concise content!
What chord progression could you use if you want a like a morder twist to it? for example a jazz-pop song. love your content, super helpful!
Merci, it's out of my pay grade but at least it's preparing me for later on.
Watching this drunk and stoned. Lord have mercy on my tempo
Thank you
Such an incredible video - thank you for the wisdom!

This video is amazing. This guy is a wizard.
I've been waiting for someone to do this video
thank you sir
When it comes to jazz, if you see a progression written such as ii-V-I, is it assumed that they would all be 7th chords?
yes
u are the best jazz teacher!
Thanks!
Excellent video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Great to find you.....thanks so much
You are so welcome
Guitar sounds so beautiful. What kind of Guitar is it?
Thanks! It's a custom-made Victor Baker. I made a video on this guitar's specs. You can it watch here: ruclips.net/video/ym2XbAVD9Ec/видео.html

Wow!!!! Good! Like this 🇧🇷
outstandingly helpful content, thank you!
Is it just me or is the minor diatonic series chart at 11:22 wrong?
well, the key of the Autumn leave isn't Bb, it's Gm
4:14 Sounds more like a Gm7 to me
It's altered with a #9, which is the same as b3, so I guess it's kind of both dominant and minor 7th at the same time? :D I definitely hear the #9 better than the 3 in this audio too though
@@grammarpenguin 5 months later... Let's see how my ear was back then 😅
@@grammarpenguin hmm I currently only hear the tones F, G and Bb. Back then I must have assumed it was an Gm7 because the Gm7 quality remains even though the fifth (D) is missing.
@@grammarpenguin For it to be an altered G chord, the B and the D should exist. At least the B, But I don't hear either of them... 🤔

They both contain the notes A and c so they can be used in a similar fashion depending on the key.
The displaying words covered some of ur hand chords, I can't see them well
Hi, thanks for the feedback. If it's the subtitle, you can click CC on the lower part of the screen to turn it off so it won't get in the way.
8.11. there should be written VI. not vi. sorry
Hey, thanks for pointing it out! Sorry for the typo. We must have missed it during post-production.
Kiss
Oh dont take me back to kindergarten...
ah sorry I didn't know you were going to show to this video
This guy's just a talker
Did him so dirty 😭
when someone starts talking in jazz terms, me after 5 minutes: 🥱😴💤
