  • The Practical Slav Defense by IM Tom Bartell: www.chessable.com/book-conten...
    The Slav Defense (beginning 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6) has formed the basis of my Black repertoire against 1.d4 for quite some time, so I was particularly interested in reviewing this repertoire by IM Tom Bartell. In this video I discuss the philosophy behind the Slav Defense and explore Tom's repertoire.

    I'm a Queen's Gambit player so it's helpful to see blacks ideas in the Slav! As of now, I just play the Slav Exhange variation to avoid all this. :) But someday I'd like to play the Slav from the black side so I will keep this in mind! Thanks for sharing.

    Awesome video john. Ill be practicing this. Suprisingly I havent encountered a slav type of game since i usually use e4. I just got into using d4. Hope to become an IM just like you. Im currently at 1703 elo.

      Daniel Jefferson how old are you rn? It's important to start at a pretty young age or you probably won't become an IM. Either way though, 1700 is really good!

    I was very sad to see that Tom Bartell's courses are now longer available on chessable. I was lucky enough to purchase "Practical Slav", but I didn't get "Practical Caro-Kann" on time :( I don't understand why do they remove these kind of courses, which are very good for relative beginners to learn some basic lines and ideas.

      Yes, I want to buy Bartell's course but it's not available in 6/2020.

    Apparently this course is no longer available on Chessable. In fact, there's a noticeable absence of any in-depth coverage of the standard Slav for Black on Chessable at this time.

    Potentially the best quick introduction to the slav by John. Was going to check out the course but looks like it may not be on chessable any more. If it is do send a link

      Thanks, Steve! And unfortunately I think that's correct - I believe Chessable and/or the author took the course down. Maybe check out GM Colovic's course on the Chebananeko Slav? www.chessable.com/lifetime-repertoires-chebanenko-slav/course/37609/

    ( giving their life stories or boring etc) ... Nice Presentation. I have been using the Slav in recent times. My Results are ok, 60/40 at present... Thank you for not being boring and sleepy dull. Good Job.

    Hey John, this video was very instructive for me. I have a question for you. What would it take to persuade you to make basic opening explanation videos? Nothing as thorough as what you can find on Chessable of course, just videos that explain what the basic ideas are for both sides, the main variations, and maybe a few examples of common themes in those openings. So many people at my level have difficulty studying openings, and while there are obviously many books to consider, plus Chessable, I think a lot of people would benefit from a brief crash course video of the basic ideas before looking through the more detailed lines in Chessable or in other chess opening books.
    There was a RUclips channel several years ago called Jrobichess, and he did a short video series explaining the fundamentals of the Sicilian defense, and those videos were the reason I started playing the Sicilian. Unfortunately all of his videos are inaccessible now, I'm guessing he abandoned the channel and has never logged in since. His Sicilian analysis consisted of about five videos, the first explaining the line 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 ... From there the other four videos explained the basic ideas involved in the Dragon, the Sveshnikov, the Classical, and the Najdorf, one video for each. Even though there's obviously a lot more involved in the Sicilian defense than five 10-minute videos can explain, it was still a great way to be introduced to an opening, and it gave me the foundational understanding I needed to get into more advanced analysis from other sources.
    But anyway, like I said I'm not asking for extreme in depth analysis of every variation of an opening, because that's what Chessable is for. I just think that you have a very nice way of explaining things, and given that your channel is mainly for instructive content, I thought it would be really cool for you to consider making videos like this. I guess you could think of it as a preview for a Chessable repertoire. That way you're not necessarily being redundant, but you're helping people get a decent understanding of an opening so they really get the most out of the full Chessable repertoire. What do you think?

      Check out St. Louis Chess Club. Definitely a lot of videos like what you're talking about. Akobian, Ramirez and Schrantz all have videos devoted to the key ideas in various opening lines, as I'm sure do some of the other lecturers.

    Hey JB... love the channel. I found it and it inspired me to rededicate my self to learning the game. I feel like I have better resources than I did way back.
    Speaking of openings did I hear you recommend open Sicilian as opposed to c3 variation to beginners? I was thinking c3 would avoid the theory for my strength (1500 lichess, near the middle of the rating distribution). But not sure yet where to spend my time. If you still recommend open Sicilian what's a good resource? Saw 1 book on chessable but wasn't sure about it. thoughts?

    John, just out of curiosity, how roughly how high is the percentage of people who attempt the IM title and actually get it? A lot of people focus on the GM title, but I feel like the IM title is still no easy task to achieve.

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  7 лет назад +2

      Definitely! Of rated players only a small percentage become IMs/GMs, so it's a tough task. I remember seeing some hard numbers on this once, so if anyone out there knows feel free to chime in.

    • @Veaseify
      @Veaseify 7 лет назад +4

      Its hard to know exactly how many FIDE Rated players there are but it is pushing 200.000. Of those around 4000 are IM's. So a ballpark figure would be 2%, although there are many inactive IM's just like GM's so the actual percentage of 'active' IM's may be something closer to 1% of all rated players...

    • @JohnBartholomewChess
      @JohnBartholomewChess  7 лет назад

      It does not - Tom recommends exclusively the Slav proper (1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 dxc4). Maybe we can convince him to make a companion Semi-Slav repertoire some time ;)

      Okay.I wanted to ask you something.I've been playing the Semi-Slav for a while now,but I've recently started liking the Stonewall Dutch.Should I switch,or not?
