HOW TO FIX A RANDOM PC SHUTDOWN (CRASH)

  • What was the problem with my computer ?
I struggled with my computer since the start of 2018 and couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it. It was constantly shutting down on me in no particular order. Sometimes I could edit for two hours until it crashed and other times it crashed right after I logged into my windows account. So that was been going on for a longer period of time. Neither the support nor other people I have talked to could help me find a solution, so I tried to fix it on my own.
Here is how to fix it:
I started off by checking the temperatures of the CPU and GPU because in most cases a random shutdown is due to overheating. My temperatures were high but not crazy high. I replaced the thermal heat paste on my CPU, just to make sure but I couldn’t notice a difference at all.
I checked on the overclocking in my bios system and changed the overclocking to automatic. It was on a constant power of 2,4Ghz before and now that I changed it to auto, it regulates itself when the CPU becomes too hot. I tried changing the overclocking to a minimum as well (in my case I tried 1,9Ghz) but I still had the random shutdowns. Ever since then, I thought that it couldn’t really be the CPU, so I moved on. I tried to eliminate any errors of the software, so I restored windows and got rid of everything I had on my computer (after a proper backup obviously). The windows restore didn’t help either, so I tried to use an older version of premiere pro but no luck here either. My next hope was to check whether or not the graphics card had an issue. I got the idea because the crash or shutdown always happened when I was editing in premiere pro, probably because it is the main thing I’m using my computer for. Sometimes the computer crashed with very little actions, such as changing the editing window or clicking on audio. Other times it was when rendering heavy 4K 10bit footage. I eventually found out a way to force the crash/shutdown, by turning the GPU acceleration in the main settings on (within premiere pro) and trying to playback heavy effects, such as VR Chroma Leaks, on a clip. This technique almost worked every time and it was from now on, that I could see whether things have changed to the better or worse. Because it has always done that when changing to GPU acceleration, I thought it must have something to do with the graphics card. I switched my graphics card with an even better one of a mate and tried to force the shutdown. Again, the computer crashed even though it took a little bit longer. I thought of two other options which could help me fix the problem, before I would have probably brought the computer to a professional. The first option was to replace the power supply and see whether that makes a difference or not and the second option was to buy a whole new processor. Luckily I started with the power supply because after exchanging that one (more details on how to switch your power supply in the video), the crash did not occur anymore. That was one of the greatest achievements of the start of this year. I am finally able to edit without saving every 5 seconds again!
    1. Check temperatures of the CPU (overclocking, heat paste)
    2. Check the Software (restore / reinstall)
    3. Check the GPU / graphics card
    4. Check the power supply
    5. Check the main board

Hi, I got this same issue of yours. Geez, I tried anything, replacing cpu cooler, video card, RAM, reseating all the cables, hard drive, fresh installing Windows, anything. Nothing happens, until I watched your upload very carefully, I was like "Wow, I forgot to replace my PSU tho", my PSU is lit since 2010, still kicking and I don't know why my PSU could be a traitor of this unsolving issues to my unit. Idk if you’ll reply to this but when it crashed was it a complete black screen shut off or was it a blue screen or a windows crash. And did it restart automatically or did you have to turn it back on yourself. I think I’m dealing with the same issue right now.

And no random freeze and reboot..I has two 140 mm intakes in the front and a single 140 exhaust in the back. But I don't know if I need both fans in the bottom and in the top ? Could my issue be similar (psu issue) even though it says I have corrupted system files? or would that point to a windows software issue? I assume that means I have a software issue instead considering my PSU worked 3 days ago. I even tried a new GPU and the same thing happens. This is also my 2nd PSU on a 1 month old build, the first one was DOA and didn't work.

    • @ARTVENTUREFILMS

I really don’t know hat causes these shutdowns but I’m 99% percent sure that it’s my PSU and I think this because I took apart my whole pc and found out the fan on my PSU does not spin at all even during start up and everytime I touch my PSU it’s extremely hot like not touchable hot, do you think an overheating PSU is the cause of my random shut downs?

.i have asked someone near me for help and they all said coz of the faulty Psu.However,it is really not too worth to buy a psu right now as the pandemic. Should i just do my own fix (my pc air flow or cpu thermal paste could also be the problem)

    • @ARTVENTUREFILMS
      @ARTVENTUREFILMS  3 года назад

hey man, sounds like a pain in the butt. Sorry to hear that. Read some of the comments too, someone suggested you could have too much dust in the PSU, which can cause power shortage as well. Maybe try and fix it yourself with doing other things too, if you think it could be thermal paste. At least you know it wasn't the thermal paste.
However, i had random shutdowns with a faulty CPU too, so maybe check that as well if you have the opportunity.

I can relate this man's emotion. From a month or so, I've been frustrated from random shutdowns.
My pc just shuts down randomly, opening perticular apps, video rendering, editing, plugin perticular usb devices, even plugin mobile via usb, dual channel rams doest work some times, system doest boot with gpu installed, cabinet fans turned on etc. And I was so distracted from rectifying the root of cause by these silly incidents.
Hense I've Upgraded my mothetboard, Sold Old Motherboard at cheap price, reinstalled windows, returned to old drivers, reinstalled CPU 3/4 times, cleaned CPU, RAM Socket, Altered Rams in different channels. It looked like problem was gone for a short time but after that no success. I was kind a depressed.
After a deep thought, Finally I've figured out that I was using a used repaired SMPS from 1.5 Years which was given from service center as product replacement. I'm going to buy a good quality SMPS which will surely solve my problem ❤
There are two major facts that I Learned here:
    1) Never use cheap local grade PSUs.
    2) Always begin from the root in order to find & fix any problem.

I’m suspecting that my issue is my power supply because mine is a cheapo, a ThermalTake Smart 700. I wish I could get my money back and put it towards a better one but I guess I can’t do that. I’d hope that I can keep getting them replaced over the warranty period when they go out. Maybe there’s something wrong with my house because the OEM PSU in my old system died too, which was when I got my gaming unit. Mine crashed playing RDR2 and then played Forza 7 fine for hours but I was navigating Google Maps yesterday and it started misbehaving and crashed 2-3 times.

I resolved the issue by running sfc / scannow at a command prompt while logged into Windows, then chkdsk /f /r via a command prompt in windows, the next time you reboot the computer, chkdsk will run a repair the system. this worked for me, good luck.

My set up is asrock 570x gaming phantom 4s, Ryzen 5 3600, XFX 5700xt raw II and 600w ps4. I had an issue where my pc should just shut off when playing games only so I thought it was a gpu heat issue or driver issue. Did everything in the video and it still shut down. So I tuned the gpu fans to turn on full max around 65c and the issue still happens. Finally I figured out it was a cpu or psi or bios issue because my card wouldn’t get over 65c gaming. When to the bios found that my cpu critical rage was set to 75 and fans were on standard. I changed the cpu critical range to 95 because that is the range for amd 3600. The. Went to fan settings in my bios to do a custom profile when to kick on fans at full throttle at around 64c. Saved my settings restarted the went to power settings in windows to adjust my power performance to 90% instead of 100% just to test. Play monster hunter max settings with no issues. No pc shutdown. My bios was shutting down the pc because the cpu was hitting Over 75c. AMD CPUs and XFX 5700 cards run real hot and use a lot of power. Definitely a cooling issue for me and the stick cpu cooler is not so great if you want to keep your cpu under 85c while gaming. I am investing in a cpu and gpu water cooled setup. Everyone says it is normal for amd to run at those temps but for longevity I will be upgrading my coolers. This was just my problem so please try at your own risk , just thought I might share how I fixed the issue.

yo so my pc shuts off when i play for 20-30 mins with gpu. but when i run off cpu graphics, I don’t crash, but people still tell me it could still be a bad power supply. any ideas?

    • @ARTVENTUREFILMS
      @ARTVENTUREFILMS  3 года назад

because the gpu and cpu together need more power than the cpu alone? when you switch on the gpu, it might be a little too much for the psu but how would i know 😉

hello, my pc shutdown randomly by itself when i'm in chrome, playing something or doing nothing, this can happen in one minute, hour until days, else i checked my gpu, cpu, hdd, rams, psu and case and everything are working fine, i think that my problem is my motherboard, i saw it but i cant found nothing strange :(

Hey man, that sounds very strange! hopefully it is not your motherboard. did you check all the other options, like overclocking, software and stuff? maybe explore the comments a bit to see what other people have done.

Mines did the same but restarts rather than shutdown....I've concluded that it is indeed my psu as I have a thermal take PSU....
    Not my temps ,
    Doubt it's windows .
Gunna give it a try knew I would regret going with thermal take 😅

hey man, sad to hear! I would say if you upgrade from a 300W to 500W power supply it should be enough. I can't say for sure though, because I don't know your setup.
