I've been in the storm camping senario & I've had wet bedrooms in the tent & sleepness nights, with drowsy mornings or even had to run out and spend the night in the car watching the tent take water like a thirsty dog & had to down wet in dreadful wet weather. So I know that miserable feeling oh too well, & watching from warm bed as someone else deals with all that cold and discomfort is so comforting.

    You jogged a memory when you mentioned being ready to change plans on the fly. I went on a solo overnight backpacking trip about 35 years ago, picking a place I’d been to before, but not for awhile. I got a later start than was ideal, and once on the trail, well, I lost the trail, finding myself on a steep slope. It was also getting dark and very cold. I realized I would have to make do somehow. There weren’t any really flat places, but I found a spot just big enough for myself and my sleeping bag, up against a tree so I wouldn’t roll down the hill! I didn’t sleep comfortably, but I was warm enough. In the morning I decided that had been adventure enough, and took the shortest route back to my car, a picnic table and hot coffee!

    Hi, I am watching this in June 2022. When you mentioned how quiet it was there except for the jet flying over head, a plane flew over our house just after you said that. Funny. Felt like I was sharing your experience. The good thing about this kind of weather is that no one else is out. So you can drive slow and careful without being tailgated and able to take wide turns as needed. Thanks for sharing

    “It’s been raining quite a bit out here” then you notice the light pond his tent was on. Also I love your attitude towards weather, I’m the same way. It’s the experience, both from the situation and your own past experience. I do camping/bushcraft stuff all the time when it rains or snows just to improve my techniques.

    Seeing that trash in the woods reminds me of the video @bluegabe and @kellyyoung put up about all of the trash in the ocean, the Indian with the tear streaming down his cheek from the commercial in the late 70’s about pollution really hit me hard. It’s so heartbreaking to see how people treat our Mother Earth.

    One good option for freezing rain if you happen to be camping and caught in it, are cave bluffs and caves. Got caught out a time or two on Mt Leconte in TN and stayed under the cave bluffs till the freezing rain was done.

    I woke up at home when I was a kid to having slept through an ice storm. All of a sudden I heard what I would have sworn were multiple gun blasts. I hit the floor and made my way to the window to look out. It was then I saw the spectacular show nature had for us and realized what had happened. Lots and lots of branches broke after that storm. So I totally get the idea of not wanting to be in a dense forest with that happening! So scary to think about!

As you can imagine almost all my work was outdoors so the daily weather forecast was important stuff, not to mention my hobbies of hunting, fishing, camping, ATV riding etc. Basically my life is the outdoors. Cool story about Great Grandpa, and since most of them passed along similar stories, "brutal winters" and people working all year to prepare, plus we kids had similar frozen creek stories: it all adds up to winter being different these days. I bet Grandpa had a big old canvas roll, a wool blanket, and maybe a mule.

    I went thru a winter around 1990-- its the worst one I've ever seen in my 78 years for just cold. About six inches of snow and was minus
    20 degrees Fahrenheit every day for 10 straight days. The thing I was remembering is how the hardwood trees were popping like a 22 RIFLE. All night long. They split down the growth rings and really are loud.

    Come on man, you could have done an hours clean up at that site and that would have made some difference.
    No excuses for the people who left that site like that, but you had the means to tidy the place up and at least have centralised the garbage.
    Payback would have been new ownership of the abandoned axe, which could have come in handy for additional protection and the ropes and lines for sure could have been utilised. Expected better from you. Don’t just test the equipment, test yourself too!

    • @akkiko
      @akkiko 3 года назад

      I feel like centralizing it wouldn't do much as he obviously couldn't afford to carry more on such a long hike and eventually the weather would scatter it every which way again.

      @@akkiko : Sorry, but that’s just a justification for doing nothing.
      The written and the unwritten rule in the wildness or on the hill, don’t litter; then it is clean up if you can and assist by removal if possible, especially plastics. The amount of equipment as well as trash at this site, could never be justified in just doing nothing!
