Thanks Woody. When we have finally moved, the wheels are turning slowly on this one I am so looking forward to building a more solid obsy and I will keep the high walls, good wind protection
I found your channel BECAUSE I've been searching around for DIY roll-off observatories to research for ideas for my own build. You've got a great channel here, keep it up!
Thank you for this video. I am inspired to do this and I am going to use your basic concepts here in Northeast Ohio, USA. I have limited sky view in my back yard, but I do what I can. My plan is to purchase a 7'' X 7'' shed and go for it! Good job.
Hi Gene and thank you for commenting. That excellent news and I am sure it will enhance your hobby a lot. Please reach out if I can help with any questions you may have, I have a few videos on the build and modifications I have made but may not have covered everything. Clears skies
@@Astrobloke have you thought of second hand (to keep the cost down) garage door opener? I have two, best thing I ever did! I have a remote control in my truck, just have to press a button and the door opens!! Maybe you could adapt that somehow? Just a thought!
@@SimonsAstro thats a great suggestion. I have had a small look but need to do some proper research but I think that could be the right solution for me.
@@Astrobloke Thanks, I will. It's been a dream for 40 years. My pier is in, (Telephone pole) and my shed is built, (Lifetime 7.5'x8'). Just starting the framework. My scope is a Nexstar 8" With a future upgrade now that I have an Observatory.
This is an exciting project on a hobby budget. I was wondering if something like a: $160.00 [Genie Chain Drive 500 Garage Door Opener - Heavy Duty, Reliable Chain Drive - Includes 1 Pre-Programmed Garage Door Opener Remote, Lighted Wall Button, Safe-T-Beam System ] would work? It has close/open limit switches. 😎 Thanks a lot. Doctor's who TARDIS. 🧐
I am sure that could be made to work. I went for this system over chains as I think there is less chance of any failures. But there are many ways and that system could even work better
Hi Glen great videos very helpful. Can you tell me where you got the thermostat plugs from please, maybe a link if possible. Keep the great work up, happy clear skies... K
Hi Keith and thank you. The actual plug I bought is no longer listed hence why I didn’t include a link. It was from amazon and if you just type thermostatic plug there are various option available
Awesome details on your observatory Glenn! You've already given me ideas with the greenhouse heaters. After you've engineered an automatic roof opener for yours, maybe you can help me work on mine lol.
Thanks Joe. Once I have come up with a suitable plan I shall share my ideas and of course help you. Still thinking about it as not yet come up with a good affordable option.
Thanks, very informative. I have just bought a Keter shed and will give it a go. If you were starting from scratch, would you do anything differently? For example, rolling more of the upper section of the walls (or indeed the whole shed), rather than just the roof? Keep up the good work!
Hi Paul and thank you for commenting. I definitely would look at other options if I do it again. I would most probably go larger firstly. Another guy has the same shed and took my ideas but cut the shed in half. He sent me an image I could share with so you can see. If you email me at astrobloke@outlook.com i’ll email it back to you
Hi there, Glenn. I have just finished the first stage of by observatory build and I went back to check this video as I have the same issue with the gantry bringing water in through capillary action. Anyway I have fixed that now (roof sealant on the whole of the gantry) but can I ask about the height of the pier - what is the distance from the centre line of the parked scope to the top of the side wall? I need a bespoke pier as my room is a little higher than yours and trying to work out the measurements of the pier? Thanks a lot. Chris
Hi Chris and congrats on the obsey build. My walss are 6ft high from the floor and floor to centre line of scope parked horizontally is just under 5ft. about 4ft 10" i could have gone higher to clear more wall but my horizon of trees and rooftops would not have allowed any more sky so sat down a bit to get more wind protection. Hope this helps Glenn
@@Astrobloke Hi Glenn, was about to email about the pier height but thought I would check the comments first and found the info I wanted. I'm pretty close to starting out on my own build. Hi and thank you for the compliment. I hope my solution helps you out in some way.
Man I thought home observatories were super expensive builds. You got me thinking now, bloke. Thanks for the very good information.
You are welcome. Some of the solutions are just way overpriced in my opinion. This has been one if the best things I ever did for my hobby.

Hi Mitch. Its without doubt one of the best things you can do as it makes the hobby so much easier. Its a bit of work but well worth it.
Thank you for sharing. Beautiful observatory.
Thank you Amy that’s very kind of you to say that
Great update ! Man i hope you will go through with automating it ...
Thank you. If you look through my videos you will see I did. I now have it fully automated and can remote in from my phone if i want
Good overview of your setup Glenn, you're not wrong about the cost of the purpose made plastic ones.
Thanks Ollie. Some of the solutions are silly prices but people still buy them.
Cool Observatory!! Nice Output!!👍
Thanks you 👍
Great update Glen, good tips!

Brilliant. Keter is the way to go. I like visual - is there enough room in that size to get to the eyepieces?

Basic build with rolling roof was £800. Adding full automation and extras like insulation, cameras, lighting, flooring it was more like £1000.
