Good video Sam. But it's too bad that you didn't discover what is in Genesis 28:15 too. I believe that you are using the Legacy Standard Bible which translates the Hebrew as "not forsake you until", where the King James has translated it into English as: “for I will “not leave thee, until” I have done that which I have spoken to thee of” This is from the Masoretic Hebrew text, כִּי ”לֹא אֶֽעֱזָבְךָ עַד“ אֲשֶׁר אִם־עָשִׂיתִי אֵת אֲשֶׁר־דִּבַּרְתִּי לָֽךְ This is the first time that the Divine have ever Spoken the Words, *I will not leave thee, until*, and this was certainly never spoken to Abraham or Isaac, the other Two Patriarchs. Did you ever happen to notice that the Theophanic Man/Messenger that you're are speaking about here, only stayed and wrestled with Jacob *UNTIL the LIGHT*? The vow (the very first recorded vow) is a Quid Pro Quo vow. The Divine cannot lie, but Jacob didn't trust and have faith in YHVH yet. YHVH had to first fulfill His Promise, before Jacob would consider Him to be his God. So, the real question would be if Isaiah 55:11. is true, then why did Genesis 35:10. occur after Genesis 32:28.??? The reason that YHVH struck Jacob's hip is because it's a foreshadowing (damah from Hosea 12:10.) of the relationship between the future Israel and the Divine. Jacob (the first Israel) was lame and (they) didn’t “walk correctly”. The “striking” of Jacob’s thigh fulfills Amos 3:7., and it also foreshadows all of the punishments that YHVH would levy upon the first Israel for always being “stiffnecked” and “wrestling” with Him. The reason that Jacob asked YHVH what His name was, was because Jacob didn't personally know YHVH nor His Name “El Shaddai” or “God Almighty”. The Name “El Shaddai” was what the other Two Patriarchs, (Abram/Abraham - Genesis 17:1. and Isaac - Genesis 28:3.) knew YHVH’s Name as (see Exodus 6:3.), albeit both of them knew “El Shaddai” as being their “Nurturing Sustainer”. So, God replaces Jacob’s name with *Israel before the LIGHT*. Because God had only replaced Jacob’s name with Israel based upon the following criteria: • Jacob had shown his determination to struggle and to constantly fight against God. • And he had flaunted his rebellious propensity to disobey a Tôwrâh Commandment. This is a damah that warns of the divisive relationship between God and the first Israel, where the LORD “casts them out” (after *YESHUA the LIGHT*), for their rebellion, iniquities, and transgressions. I'd be happy to provide you with more brother, (I am almost 20 years older than you are). We all can learn more, Sam. Just ask.
P.S. The text "he (Jacob) wept, and made supplication unto Him (YHVH): He (Jacob) found Him (YHVH) in Bethel, and there he (Jacob) spake with Us (the Divine);" in Hosea 12:4. is referring to the Genesis 35:10 encounter.
The answer to who Jacob "wrestled" is here: Ephesians 6:12 The victorious struggle took place before God, from which Jacob received the name "Israel". Thus, "Israel" means a victorious struggle ("wrestle") before God on a spiritual level (against dark powers).
@@Lund.J No, Jacob did not wrestle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in high places. Jacob wrestled against YHVW!!! Also, *so you believe that the created can be victorious over their Creator then* Wouldn't this make far more sense? Genesis 32:28.: “And He said, “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power (שָׂרִ֧ית - the root verb שָׂרָה - sârâh; Qal stem, “to persist, to struggle and contend”) with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” (וַתּוּכָֽל - the root verb יָכֹל - yakol; Qal stem, to be “victorious, overcome, prevail and *endure”, where *endured* would be the correct translation.) Why *endured* instead of prevailed is the correct translation, is because it would be impossible for Jacob, or any created being, to somehow be victorious and to miraculously “prevail” over their Unfathomably Powerful, “Creator God”! Jacob *endured* because God simply “spared” his life. (See 32:30.) Genesis 32:30.: "And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my “life” is preserved (the verb וַתִּנָּצֵל the root נָצַל - natsal; Niphal stem, delivered, or *spared*).” Jacob didn’t “prevail” over God! Instead, God simply *spared* Jacob’s life for a future Purpose.
I was puzzling over this just this morning and asking God about it. He has sent me the answer this evening, praise be to his name. And thank you Sam for expounding the precious word to us.

@@nathankupczyk3125 The word Elohim is a species title like Earthling or Martian. Elohim are creatures and a Creator who live in the supernatural realm, the 3rd Heaven, or just Heaven. The angels (messengers) can travel between the world of the Elohim and the world of the Humans. There are other things in Heaven besides the Elohim, just as their are on Earth besides the humans, but these two species, both created by God, were created to live in different realms unless sent on an errand. So the "Angel" was an Elohim. The "Man" was an Elohim. "God" is an Elohim (but that's like saying the young boy who builds a basement full of Lego cities and people is a Lego. He can go into and out of the Lego world, but as the creator he is superior to the Lego creations.) But as far as whether he can enter the realm of the Elohim, yes. He has his throne there.

He wrestled with Jesus. Also the way i think of it since the Hebrew word for angel means messanger and this particular angel is called "the angel of Yahweh" it can be conflated to be "the message of Yahweh" which can also be rephrased as "the Word of Yahweh".

The problem is el and elohim DO NOT MEAN GOD. When are Christians going to understand this? it literally tells you in Hosea exactly what he fought with and it clearly calls this an angel, not God. And it calls this angel, elohim. How much clearer could you get that el does not mean God? It literally spells it out for you.

Spiritual beings are called this because they have power beyond what we have. Yes, the majority of times this word is used, it is referring to God but not always and not even close. And here you see clearly that elohim means an angel. The crazy part of this video is that most Christians bring up Jacob wrestling because they don't know Hosea and they believe the lies they are told. However, this guy actually quotes from there and quotes the very verse which tells you it is an angel. Just incredible that he could do this with a straight face. That is why we mortals can never comprehend God, being the mighty one, he can manifest himself to we mortals in many ways to show us his might. I had been also disturbed by this verse and thought how could God wrestle with a mear man, was prepared food and ate then he was called an Angel, I thought to myself it was impossible but now I perceive it, If God cannot reveal himself in any form as he pleases, the he isn't God and he does this for those with Faith to indeed he is God.

I am so blessed with the Church that Jesus has established. Hallowed be Thy name. I saw on the comments the ongoing debates: both the Jews and Christians are sincere and polite while trying to prove their standpoints. I appreciate & applause both sides. Starting here I am trying to answer questions in the long discussions: Now I see why the Jews struggle to accept Trinity, and what they have been taught that Elohim can mean strength, not always God. But that doesn't change the point: Jacob said "I have seen God face to face yet my life has been delivered." It doesn't make sense to apply this sentence if it was an angel. But the argument from Jews are from Hosea, where malakh (angel) is used. But the Christians have no problem with it, because in Exodus too, there is the angel that bears God's name, who forgives sins, and had to be obeyed. Remember that Trinity doctrine is one nature of God and three hypostasis. It is not contained as number: one plus one equals two. But metaphysics: infinity + infinity = infinity, or even infinity / 3 = infinity. So yeah, YHWH, its living Word, and its living Spirit. Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. In order for human to perceive Him, He needs to appear in some kind of forms: burning bush, light silent sound, pillar of fire, dove, Jesus, and sure an angel. What other form to meet Jacob face to face and wrestle with him.
Question was asked by our Jewish brothers why worshipping Jesus, look at Israelites whorshipping calf in Exodus was so wrong even though they thought its God: remember that the Israelites just came out from Egypt the pagan nation, where one of their pagan gods is Api - a bull deity. They still wanted the old way of worship, old way of living. At the same time it is an attempt to contain & control God to do human will. (I made you god, you do my will). When Moses obediently come to God, Israelites forces God to come to their presence into golden calf to guide them. Lastly, I saw a Jewish brother pointing that all Christian becomes one because of emotion: struggle with life, troubles, etc. Amen, thankyou brother, thats is exactly what Jesus said Luke 5:31-32 [31] Jesus said to them in reply, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. [32] I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”

Nice sermon thanks. I would add two things. Firstly, Yeshua is the visible image of the invisible God, thus any appearance of God that you can see, OT and NT, according to Paul, is Yeshua. Why? Because God is the same yesterday, today and forever. So when Yeshua said that the OT speaks of Himself, He was speaking literally. Yes, that's right, that is Yeshua Himself walking around and talking in the OT. Secondly, the tradition Paul followed for the Tetragrammaton, which is what we have in both the MS, the Peshitta, and the LXX, is the LORD, which the KJ also follows nicely, as well as putting the appearances of the Angel of the Lord in capitals, so it's easy to spot this amazing miracle.

"previously the name of the city had been Luz." Interestingly, "Luz" means "light" in Spanish. How does a Spanish word appear in reference to a city in Israel dating back to 1652-1505 BC?
"Luz" in the Bible means almonds (H3868), also separation or turn aside, and departure (H3869) (Hebrew). As almonds, they were abundant there in Bethel during those times. And almonds talk about God being "watchful" of His word to be performed hastily. As "separation" and "departure" prophetically means Jacob is going to separate ways with his brother Esau and to depart from being just a "Jacob" (in hot pursuit of God, "stalker") to become an "overcomer" (Israel, one who rules with God and with men).
Hey guys. I’ve been watching clips for several weeks now. I’m learning quite a bit. Could you recommend the best bible version I might use to follow the show and your arguments. Currently I’m using my childhood Living Bible. I’d like to try another for contrast. Thanks in advance.
Hi Ed, I would recommend a more literal Bible version to contrast with your Living Bible. ESV and NASB are considered literal by a lot of people, which make it harder to read. NKJV and KJV are good too and fairly literal but also harder to read for a different reason being the older English phrases used there. Sam currently uses the LSB because it uses a form of the divine name, but as literal as the NASB (both produced by the same group). Hope that answers your question!
12:04 I don't think men(plural for man) was referring to God as a man but rather Laban and Esau(men) or maybe it also includes god as man and served as a final test for Jacob to fulfill the part where he has sufficiently striven with men for his name to be Israel. I cannot think it means all men, otherwise it would roughly translate as "all men" or "man".
A different approach to the text could come considering these facts/points: 1. it starts for the context at Genesis 31:53: God of Nahor (Who is that?). see also Joshua 24:2 2. Rachel still has the teraphim (idols from other religions) with her 3. How can Jacob defeat the almighty God? (verse 29) 4. Why does Jacob want to be blessed by the loser? (verse 27) - Hebrews 7:7 states that the lesser is to be blessed by the better (the weaker by the stronger) 5. Why must the loser get away in the morning? (verse 27) 6. The story is told in a somewhat expanded form in Hosea 12:4-7, where the fighter is referred to as an angel [Malak]. Malak can also simply mean messenger or envoy, as in the same chapter Genesis 32:4. 7. a man [ish] fights. This can also simply be someone beyond the human realm (see, for example, Joshua 5:13, 14). God [elohim] is translated by some Jews and rabbis here and in Hosea as deity, which is permissible. Elohim of other nations, for example, are called gods (as already mentioned in Joshua 24:2 above, also here: Deuteronomy 10:17; Psalm 95:3; Psalm 86:8; Psalm 97:9 etc). Our God [Yahweh] fights against the gods of Egypt and executes a judgment on them (Exodus 12:12). It is in this context that the Elohim appear in the NT, for example in Paul's passage “rulers, authorities, world rulers, spirits of wickedness” (Ephesians 6:12). It appears in many texts that different areas/peoples had their own “Elohim”. 8. The sequence of events could be under these circumstances (especially with Hosea 12:4-7) like the following: The Elohim of Edom wants to prevent Jacob from reconciling with his brother, but cannot defeat him until dawn. He fought with the angel (Hosea 12) and was superior. Jacob wept and begged God [Yahweh] for mercy [help]. Our God helps him and gives him strength (that would be according to Genesis 28 again). The foreign Elohim can just dislocates his hip, but Jacob prevents him from leaving. God decides this battle and Jacob is allowed to enter the land. 9. Blessing [barak] in verse 27 can also mean praising someone. So the foreign Elohim had to admit here that he had lost. Blessing is from the higher to the lower. From lower to higher (as here) one should rather translate praise. You can then translate like this: I will not let you go unless you have praised me! 10. The almighty Yahweh-Elohim [our God] has “no idea” of a change of name. Genesis 35:10: “Your name is Jacob”. The encounter with Jacob in Bethel is completely different from this mysterious battle.)
Only those who don't know structure and language of the old testament could say the angel is god...... the prophets were also speaking as God, were they god?..... obviously the angels spoke as God because they are messengers of God and quoting the word of God. How does it make any sense that "God" cannot Prevail a man and "God" asked a man Permission to go?..... the Hebrew text doesn't Necessarily say "God" it says ELOHIM/El which doesn't always mean "God," the Definition of these words means "mighty" which could be angels, so jacob Is wrestledwith an angel, not with God.
Actually the old testament says that. Exodus 33:20. This whole discussion is mute since it all contradicts this clear statement. You can not see God. Period. This negates any notion of Jesus being a divine being.
No one has seen God, but once you meet Jesus you see him all throughout the Old Testament. And many saw God face to face they died to self and we're able to live.
@@nathankupczyk3125 OK. The correct quotation is no-one has seen God. John 1:18 doesn't say face to face. The Hebrew old Testament calls God Elohim. Elohim is divine plurality of persons. We see three persons in scripture who are the Elohim of Israel. His name is YHWH. First el Elyon the god most high who no one sees. He is God in heaven. He is the father in the relationship of Elohim. Second we see the Holy Spirit of Elohim. He is God, a person, but not the father or the son. Thirdly we see the yhwh who appears on Earth who descends and ascends to the throne at the right hand of the father. He appeared to Adam, Cain, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, the prophets saw him and wrote about him. He is Co substantial but also appears in the flesh. He is the King of righteousness with no beginning nor ending he is the word of God he is the likeness of the glory of the lord, he is the one in the fire with Daniel's friends. He incarnated as Jesus Christ. John 1:18 in the Greek says - No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
Be blown away. lol. He needs to relax a little bit. Some of us already knew who the angel was. Sam is a great teacher.. but sometimes he gets a little ahead of himself.
The answer is from 9:33, but you won’t get it unless you watch from the start!
Timestamps:
0:00 Definition of Angel (this will be important later)
1:35 Jacob meets Yahweh at Bethel (keep watching, trust me)
6:34 The Angel of God says he met Jacob at Bethel (getting there, you’ll be 🤯)
9:33 Now the passage you’re looking for (Jacob wrestles a man)
14:11 And now the inspired exegesis of what you just read (Hosea 12)
Good video Sam. But it's too bad that you didn't discover what is in Genesis 28:15 too.
I believe that you are using the Legacy Standard Bible which translates the Hebrew as "not forsake you until", where the King James has translated it into English as:
“for I will “not leave thee, until” I have done that which I have spoken to thee of”
This is from the Masoretic Hebrew text, כִּי ”לֹא אֶֽעֱזָבְךָ עַד“ אֲשֶׁר אִם־עָשִׂיתִי אֵת אֲשֶׁר־דִּבַּרְתִּי לָֽךְ
This is the first time that the Divine have ever Spoken the Words, *I will not leave thee, until*, and this was certainly never spoken to Abraham or Isaac, the other Two Patriarchs.
Because God had only replaced Jacob’s name with Israel based upon the following criteria:
• Jacob had shown his determination to struggle and to constantly fight against God.
The answer to who Jacob "wrestled" is here:
Ephesians 6:12
The victorious struggle took place before God, from which Jacob received the name "Israel".
Thus, "Israel" means a victorious struggle ("wrestle") before God on a spiritual level (against dark powers).
3 temptations of Jesus refers to the same thing.
Advasary will fail in the last of them.
@@Lund.J No, Jacob did not wrestle against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Jacob wrestled against YHVW!!!
Also, *so you believe that the created can be victorious over their Creator then*
Wouldn't this make far more sense?
Genesis 32:28.: “And He said, “Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power (שָׂרִ֧ית - the root verb שָׂרָה - sârâh; Qal stem, “to persist, to struggle and contend”) with God and with men, and hast prevailed.” (וַתּוּכָֽל - the root verb יָכֹל - yakol; Qal stem, to be “victorious, overcome, prevail and *endure”, where *endured* would be the correct translation.)
Why *endured* instead of prevailed is the correct translation, is because it would be impossible for Jacob, or any created being, to somehow be victorious and to miraculously “prevail” over their Unfathomably Powerful, “Creator God”! Jacob *endured* because God simply “spared” his life. (See 32:30.)
Genesis 32:30.: "And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my “life” is preserved (the verb וַתִּנָּצֵל the root נָצַל - natsal; Niphal stem, delivered, or *spared*).”
Jacob didn’t “prevail” over God!
Instead, God simply *spared* Jacob’s life for a future Purpose.
The bible is forever revealing blessings and full of life. ✝️🙏🏽🕊️

This is what i always say to the jews. If Jacob wrestled with just an angel. His name should be IsraMalakh. But he wrestled with God. That's why his name became Israel.
@@nothingbutthetruth613 seriously you know nothing. Genesis 1:1. Elohim created earth and heaven. So an angel created earth and heaven. Not God?? Please stop this.
@@menderkoure6442 So let's go through a little basic Hebrew. Every word in Hebrew has a root. The root of the word elohim is el. The word el does not mean God at all. There is NOTHING in this word that means God. El means strong or mighty. That's it. Look at Psalm 29:1 "sons of the mighty". It is simply conveying the idea of strength and power. Spiritual beings are called this because they have power beyond what we have. Yes, the majority of times this word is used, it is referring to God but not always and not even close. Look at Exodus 7:1 taking about Moses "I have made you elohim..." Is Moses god too? Look at Exodus 21 and 22. Elohim is referring to judges all throughout these chapters. Then you have people that actually still fall for it. It literally says what this being was and it's not any God. What is he talking about? Just amazing!

He revealed Himself as El Shaddai to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. but to Moses He said THE Divine Name (HASHEM is Hebrew for it) “I AM THAT I AM”. or YHWH

I am so blessed with the Church that Jesus has established. Hallowed be Thy name.
I saw on the comments the ongoing debates: both the Jews and Christians are sincere and polite while trying to prove their standpoints. I appreciate & applause both sides.
Starting here I am trying to answer questions in the long discussions:
Now I see why the Jews struggle to accept Trinity, and what they have been taught that Elohim can mean strength, not always God.
Question was asked by our Jewish brothers why worshipping Jesus, look at Israelites whorshipping calf in Exodus was so wrong even though they thought its God:
remember that the Israelites just came out from Egypt the pagan nation, where one of their pagan gods is Api - a bull deity.
Amen, thankyou brother, thats is exactly what Jesus said Luke 5:31-32
[31] Jesus said to them in reply, “Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. [32] I have not come to call the righteous to repentance but sinners.”

Gen 32:29 'Then He said, "From now on you will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have fought with GOD and with men and you have conquered." GOD = 'The Word.' + Hosea 12:4-5. - ' and in his masculine strength he contended with God. He fought with the angel and overcame.'

The Angel of The Lord never rebuked those for worship of Him. There was always a distinction between angels and The Angel of The Lord. Just because He could have destroyed Jacob doesn't mean He wanted to. Like a father who wrestles thier kids and let's them win to build confidence.
@@JD-gw3fp how could you say it's like a father let his kids win when the Hebrew text explicitly says he COULD NOT prevail him? The simple meaning of "could not" means simple like that he COULD NOT prevail! Beside this, if it was like a father who let his kids win why did Damage the Socket of Jacob's hip?? Is this what a father does??.... was jacob like a small kid who was looking for some "Confidence" to show up that he's a "Strong guy"?....
@nathankupczyk3125 Do you always read the text plain? Was that my opinion in the form of an analogy? Yes. But regardless a regular angel could have destroyed Jacob. God, could have destroyed Jacob, but did not? Why wrestle? Is there something deeper to the text? This was not a mere angel, and even Jacob said it was God. You saying Elohim does not defeat my argument. What is the context of this verse is the question you should ask yourself. Elohim can mean one thing and then mean something different somewhere else. This was Christ preincarnet that embodied a man to wrestle with Jacob.
Also the disjoint was probably a reminder of that day. Jacob is Israel, and Israel wrestled with God throughout thier rise and falls.

The Angel of the Lord is also the one that appeared to Moses in the burning bush, the one named I AM, as well Michael the archangel that fought the dragon before the Earth was created (Rev), the one mentioned 3 times by Daniel, the one that fought Satan for the body of Moses, and the one named Israel, who gives Jacob his name.
Jude tells us that Michael was sent by God to deal in some way with the body of Moses, which God Himself had buried after Moses’ death...
Michael =/= God i fear to tell you.
The gateway of God was there. Jesus said I am the door and only through Jesus is the way to life for He is the way. The gate Way. Jesus was there when Jacob anointed the pillar. I love the Lord Jesus. His word is my light

That is the most brilliant explanation of Jacob's wrestle I have ever heard. Interesting, those who follow Judaism call the angel Esau. As an agnostic,Sam really explains in detail.

@@nathankupczyk3125 Not sure what you are saying, do you see Esau in this description? Sam clearly interprets that God can manifest himself as an angel. . Take another example in Exod.23:20-22. Who is this angel? My name is within him. Obey him,for he will not forgive your transgressions. No other angel in the hebrew scriptures is spoken of this way. Read the bible for what it says and try to understand it and not for what others tell you it says.
@@baldeagle-cq2jl rabbinic Commentaries are not always based on the Description. However, you're free not to accept, that's not the point. If I would accept that the angel wrestling With Jacob was god, it's also what others tell me it says, right?....
Regarding exudes 23, I'm just trying to understand. Obviously God forgive Transgressions, if the angel doesn't forgive transgressions how could he be God? According to Christianity that the angel is Jesus, how could this angel be Jesus? So Jesus doesn't forgive sin?...
Judaism calls the angel Esau?? Where do you get that from and what does that even mean?
I read this part in the bible, and it felt immediately different to the sections before and after. I have no idea what was happening.

It’s a coincidence. Luz is not “light” in Hebrew.

A different approach to the text could come considering these facts/points:
1. it starts for the context at Genesis 31:53: God of Nahor (Who is that?). see also Joshua 24:2
2. Rachel still has the teraphim (idols from other religions) with her
3. How can Jacob defeat the almighty God? (verse 29)
4. Why does Jacob want to be blessed by the loser? (verse 27) - Hebrews 7:7 states that the lesser is to be blessed by the better (the weaker by the stronger)
5. Why must the loser get away in the morning? (verse 27)
Very good!!! Yet in the New Testament says no one has ever seen God face to face

@@Andy_Anas all throughout the old testament? Where? Who are the ones that saw God face to face?
John 1:18 in the Greek says -
No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.
