The difference between Maximalism and Clutter is that Maximalism is having things that are curated, carefully chosen and intentionally displayed, but Clutter is having things that are not.
Thank you for having a single RUclips channel. I am tired today. You are with me while I cook supper, the single channel is a lovely decluttered already gift
I’ve stayed a firm ‘maximalist’ through the minimalist trend. I like decor. It makes it feel warm and homey. I think that is why the tides are turning. Houses feel more like hospitals with their coldness. I like the French Country style. I have refused to change my personal taste for passing ideals. But, I choose wisely. If it is more than I can keep clean easily then it is too much. If it looks like a dumping zone and I can’t remember what is in the pile. The stuff must go! It’s a matter of finding balance.
Thank you Dana for always thoroughly explaining all the concepts to their base root. Living alone in a three bedroom house with a large backyard and full basement, I had no urge to declutter even though my three, now adult children, had moved out. It was the realization of the reality check of moving to a smaller place that I can't and don't want to take all of these unused items with me. Picture a blank horrified stare at the 'box room'. Lol What truly helps me is 'doing the dishes' concept plus 'what could I do in these rooms if these things weren't here'. If I picture the 'things' as 'unwashed dishes' cluttering the space, I know I need to 'wash/declutter' them. I'm not artistic in the sense of beautifying/decorating my home, but I love to write. It's difficult to find a motivation to declutter and clean because I live alone. Recently I went to each room in my house and wrote what my ideal use of each room would be, what would it look like, how could I achieve it? Decluttering was the answer. Daring to dream and hope! Thanks again Dana. ❤
I agree with Ms,J0an 100%. Your methods resonate with so many of us because you get to the psychology of our situation, and you explain practical ways of approaching the little changes we can make to get things under control. You. never present anything as. "All you need to do is..." as if it should all be simple. For those of us who think like you, it is not naturally simple. We need guidance to help us change the way we think. After following you for several years, I hear your voice in my head: "Get rid of the trash," "Where would I Iook for this first," "Take it there now," "It's the container concept, " etc. Thank you, Dana for figuring so many things. out, and then for sharing your pearls of wisdom with us who need your help.
Thank you for sharing your story and what motivates you to declutter. Your ideas can be added to the many I have learned from Dana and help increase my motivation to declutter!😊
I have always identified with your guidelines as they are common sense and not minimalism based. I am not a minimalist and don't want to be, but I do want things manageable. Thank you for sharing your journey. You have helped me and so many others. I'm looking forward to the new book!
Decluttering has given me space to actually curate and display all my kitchy stuff where I can actually see and enjoy it! My vintage tiki collection gets to live on my office shelves now that there's so much less crap in here, and that's just ONE of the spaces in the house where I get to do this now.
You're my hero. Better, Trash gone, unnecessary stuff gone. This makes room for the stuff we love to have out to make our house more like a home. I'm so glad you explained this.
I'm glad this term is being used because having an orderly house doesn't necessarily mean minimalism. Kon Marie method isn't minimalism either. People have really confused decluttering with minimalism.
Exactly! Marie Kondo also encourages people to keep what brings them joy, and to actually display and use those things as much as possible to maximise that joy in a functional way. Her Netflix show really showed that.
And that’s one of the reasons I love your method, Dana! You don’t push minimalism! I don’t want to be a minimalist, and the esthetic of minimalism is too cold and boring for my taste. I’ve done a lot of declutterring, and still trying to get down to my clutter threshold…mainly in the garage (the house is pretty manageable now), but I’m still not a minimalist! Don’t ever see myself being a minimalist. Never never never! I’m too creative and need my stuff to create with.
You have been such a help to me. I just heard you talk about 1974 being your birth year. I suddenly realized that was the year i graduated from college and you could be my daughter. Your wisdom made me not notice how things you are. Thanks for all you have taught me
My problem was always trying to define my style. Seven decades of various styles and repeat styles can get you into such a whirl that you don't know who you really are! Also, having a father who hoarded every nail and piece of wood because he went through hard times in his youth and a mom who could have been a Scandinavian miniamalist made it hard for me to keep my equilibrium regarding what was okay to toss or give away. My mom encouraged buying the best quality you can afford, and my dad advocated taking care of your tools, whatever they were , i.e. car, washer/dryer, mixer, etc. So, keeping decor elements from each style because i could see the value in each piece certainly didn't help me keep space in my cabinents. Dana, you have been so instrumental in helping me free myself from items i held onto because they were valuable. The container theory is genius! And the, Where would I look for this? question has even helped me pass on items while shopping. I now look at items with the question; what will I get rid of to have this? The other question is how soon will I be donating this. Ugh! But it works. It has helped me curate everything, including Christmas items. Thank you for sharing your wisdom with us.
I helped my cousin declutter and organize her house. She was very eclectic! So we grouped the items by theme/style, then decided which rooms would get which theme/style. Then we furnished and decorated every room in a different style so she could still enjoy all her varied tastes. Just a thought in case you don’t want to choose just one style. You can still declutter but keep your various styles. 😁 …anyway, we did my cousin’s kitchen all in a country cow theme, the front living room in Victorian style, and her bathroom in a roman theme. 😅 just to give you an example.
When I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology (before Dana was born), I remember learning that some committee of textile manufacturers would convene and decide the colors of a season (a year or so in advance). I was shocked to learn that the winter colors of that year were pastels. Baby blues, pinks and whites…..strange as it was, that is what was in all of the stores that winter.
Yes I heard that years ago from a Colour Me Beautiful consultant years ago. I could believe it when I saw the same 'waves of colours' in magazines and in the shops. The colour (and shape) sessions really helped me know what suits me no matter what's 'jn' or 'out'. G Ire
I love that you love Jesus!! I'm a Catholic and Jesus is most important! I find decluttering and organizing is helpful in cleaning out my brain so I can have more space for Jesus and prayer.

In your world I would define a maximalist as someone who likes to dance right at the edge of the clutter threshold and a minimalist who prefers to live well below that line.
I’m a maximalist through and through. I love seeing art and beautiful things all around me! I change it up often. I’m whittling down slowly and steadily. I put out at the curb a lot of decor I’m not crazy about anymore, after last Saturday’s marathon declutter. I have 2 eBay rooms full of stuff I’m probably not going to list, and shipping boxes to be flattened. I’ll tackle them after my living areas are 💯 livable.
Thabk you for your definition of clutter. I want to have things that I enjoy have a place and I can easily manage it. I never wanted to be a minimalist. Not a maximist either. Not worrying about drop in’s . Not spending days and days getting ready for one guest overnight .
Thank you for clarifying that you're talking about minimalism vs maximalism AESTHETICS! I'm trying to live more minimalist, but my home is not minimal design. My home has greatly improved with the container concept, love you Dana! ❤❤❤
Hi, Dana, one area where I may always be a maximalist is books. When I started decluttering, I had piles of books all over the place and knew that I needed to donate many. Unbeknownst to me, I started with "duh" donations, books I hadn't enjoyed much, books that were very outdated (What Color is Your Parachute 2001). When I got down to only books I wanted to keep, I unknowingly used the container concept to narrow and weed, and got every book put away or put into a donation box. THE NEXT DAY, no lie, I saw one of your videos about the container concept! Eureka! I felt so vindicated! Thank you!
Forever minimalist here, lol! But I certainly understand to each his own. 😊 I can’t wait to read your Jesus book! ❤️ Thank you for all your words of wisdom, Dana!
I am a minimalist in the sense that I minimise (declutter) the things that don’t serve me at the moment. Aesthetic wise, not a minimalist at all because I have hobbies and I am living with other people. 😊
You are delightful as usual. I love made-up words, including changing a word to be more fun to say. I love that you make me laugh. I have told my girls they are so lucky. One is 17 and the other 21. There is so much more freedom to find their own aesthetic. In the 80s, we did our best to dress in our clique's style. If we didn't have money for Guess jeans, we still got as close to the look as possible. Now, the style is to find your aesthetic and claim it. Cottagecore is your aesthetic, cool. Grandmacore is your aesthetic, cool. Dark Acedamia is your aesthetic, cool. You don't have an aesthetic? Uncool. I love your approach. I love that you are addressing that decluttering isn't about the aesthetic. It is about what you can handle. I prefer a more minimalistic, elegant style but I hate the minimalist empty, hard lines style. Minimalism would tell me I don't need my "Christmas threw up in here" aesthetic every December. My clutter threshold tells me that January comes around and Christmas is away because I can only handle it in short burst and then it becomes too much to dust and clean around. I know I can handle a couple of decorations all year so I have them. Here's what I also know. Cas's bugs, Lady Bugs and Crickets are going to be more drawn to minimalist preferences. I don't want to see my stuff. This does not mean that we can handle our stuff. The clutter threshold helps us realize that we can't handle the amount of stuff we are trying to hide behind closed doors. In fact, crickets can extra struggle because they need to be able to put things away correctly. When they don't put it away because it's too much to handle, those gloriously annoying piles start to happen.
I am definitely a maximalist in home decor style; lots of coordinated color and pattern and artwork. But, it's all tidy now after watching your videos for the last year. There's an intentional plan. I did Declutter a lot of stuff but it's only the stuff that I didn't really like- things that were annoying me and making it hard to tidy. (Like perfectly good clothes but that I'never wore because they are not a flattering color or whatever.) I have several thousand books still for example, but they are all in one room and all fit on beautiful wooden shelves with nothing else on the shelves in front of them and are not on the floor so they are super easy to dust and easy to find a book any time I want. And understanding about "dishes math" changed my life! :)
I love decluttering! I also love the look of a maximalist style. - but it is a very thought-out, specifically curated style. Takes Lots of planning rather than just collecting stuff and putting it together randomly. I'm better off just decluttering and keeping things simple.
😊 You're the best, Dana. I love that you loved hosting the Tupperware parties and being in front of the crowd, the world needs that. For as much as I love Norwex (the rags, not necessarily the rest of the stuff) people suggest being a consultant and I'm like no, the idea of hosting parties and talking to crowds is terrifying 😂. Most of my friends are on your side of the fence, and that's great
Congratulations on your new book 🎉 I am in the middle, I don't like clutter and like things organized. I love to decorate for holidays and have some small collections. ❤
Dana this podcast shows how much you care about your listeners. You heard about maximalism and knew it could be a trap for people who have brains like yours. Thank you for pointing out the truth about both maximalism and minimalism!
If you want to have kitschy or artsy items on display, consider buying glass door cabinets to display them. The cabinets become your container, so that gives you a space to work with. Keep the things you love and let go of the rest.
Ive always preferred a maximalist aesthetic... but i recently realised my clutter threshold is too low these days and I can't have it. As much as i love all those bits on display and having something pretty to look at everywhere, I recently completely cleared my kitchen bench (not even leaving a fruit bowl or air freshener thing) because my 1 year old keeps moving furniture and climbing onto it, and the completely empty bench makes my heart sing and no clutter builds up! As you say it is all about the clutter threshold and when we accept the reality of that it makes for a much calmer state of mind
Yes! I get those thrift store videos, too (and I think they are fun!). I'm so glad that those of us who like creative visual experiences have a term now. (I like yours better...maximum ism. 😊) Looking forward to the new book. Thank you for all you share with us!❤
Haha, I totally watch those Thrift and how I styled it. I think most of the stuff is so out dated it came back around. I think they are crazy and wonder if they just pick up the stuff for show and leave it there.
Here's how I'm looking at it, if maximalism is becoming a thing, that's good for me bc it means more business for thrift stores, which means I'll continue to have a place to take all my clutter 😂
If you’re a maximalist you’ve always been a maximalist and always will be a maximalist. Even when everyone was into the stark modern minimalism I was a maximalist.
Could you let me know what Bible you use when referring to the scriptures in your new book. Dana I would really appreciate it. Thank you for writing a book dealing with Jesus ; for God deserves are the praise.
I am at the beginning of cleaning up a mess that isn’t mine. I am trying your method, but I’m overwhelmed! I can’t do the donate thing, I can only keep and throw away!😣
Not exactly a minimalist but I will NEVER go back to “maximalism”. I was drowning. I do love the look of a perfectly curated artsy maximalist home… but as soon as something would be out of place that would irritate me. Give me blank countertops all day!!!
I like to call myself "minimal-ish". I'm fine to have a minimum amount of dishes, clothes, linens, daily living things....but I am a decorator at heart. But FOR ME there CAN be too much decor. I'm curating my collections of decor for each room & seasonal. The maximalism look of layered decor and no open spaces is too overwhelming for me.
The "Maximalism" esthetic is just too visually stimulating for me. I find it hard to relax in a space that is heavily decorated even if it is well curated.
That's the idea to find the balance for you. I have to stop the fantasizing about what all this stuff will look like in my house, like she just said - so reality is slapping me upside my head right now to find my balance.
After focusing on decluttering and getting my stuff under control, I will never go back to filling all the spaces. Maybe I’m going for Goldilocks-ism - just right!
The difference between Maximalism and Clutter is that Maximalism is having things that are curated, carefully chosen and intentionally displayed, but Clutter is having things that are not.
And yet, a maximally-styled room can feel cluttered to a minimalist - it all goes back to the clutter threshold.
Thank you for having a single RUclips channel. I am tired today. You are with me while I cook supper, the single channel is a lovely decluttered already gift

Me, one😁
I can’t go near maximalism , too dangerous for me! I’m not minamilist but I keep a lot less than before and I prefer less
That's the idea to find the balance for you. I have to stop the fantasizing about what all this stuff will look like in my house, like she just said - so reality is slapping me upside my head right now to find my balance.
😊
Clown figurines 😂💀
After focusing on decluttering and getting my stuff under control, I will never go back to filling all the spaces. Maybe I’m going for Goldilocks-ism - just right!
