- Hey everyone, part 4 of the Honda CB500 tuned engine build series, partnering with BCR Performance and P3 Tuning.
In this video i’m back at BCR Performance to do all the engine mods and tuning. Ben takes us through the process for how he modifies the engine by skimming the deck, porting the cylinder head and cutting new valve seats. Lots of improvements to the engine to gain that all important horsepower & torque!😎
What you see in the video is all part of a tuning kit that Ben offers at BCR Performance, consisting of the following:
- Gas flowed ported cylinder head
- Skimmed deck
- New seats cut
- Lightened fly wheel
- High lift cams
- New stem seals and fully shimmed

The video are making me want to go buy a cb500
@@pearman2477 ha ha yeah I've had a few people come up to me at tracks and say that they bought one, after watching my videos 😬😬😬🤣
I have one. It's a great bike for a great price.
@@dcsynklare Yeah they are a lot of fun, for something so under-powered, basic and old 😎
@dcsynklare hahaha no no no
Tell me more
Another cracking video! Can't wait to see how it turns out
@@coolmancol Cheers mate. Credit to Ben for putting up with me and my camera in his face for weeks on end 😂😂😂
Brill, can't wait for the next vid.
@@RRL551Dynamic cheers mate, it's all ready to post shortly. The next one is building the engine back up, it's a good one 😎
Excellent Video - Good showcase & hopefully attract more into the class
@@debt_slav3381 Cheers mate. Yeah hopefully it does. These bikes are a bit of a niche, but they are so fun to ride. It's nice having a simple bike to ride and work on. Especially as everything is so expensive now too run. Glad you like the videos👍
Nice video series, thanks for the footage
@@mostlymotorized Hey thanks for the comment, glad you liked the videos 👍
wow!!!
What is the year model of this engine.
@@AmrinderSingh-zx9hr it's the cb500 1992-2003 model bike. Mine is from 2002 and it was from the S model bike. But the engines are all the same across 1992-2003 👍
Awesome series.
@@dannyjonze Thank you, appreciate it. Ben @bcrperformance did an awesome job of explaining it all and simplifying it down, so that even I can understand it 🤣
Looking good 👍🏻 We'll be seeing you on the podium soon 👌
@@obionecoyle3295 ha ha, if only that was likely to happen. I think if I had an extra 30hp I'd still not make it 😂
Great work it's good to see the workmanship when I get my vfr750. I know where to come. Shame, I didn't know of you when I had my Honda GB 500TT it was flat in performance. I was very disappointed, so I sold it. Lovely looking bike, but no go😢
Thanks for the message. Yeah Ben did a great job of explaining it all. He does all types of bikes, so I'm sure he could help in future. He's in Liverpool area. 👍
Get rephase crankshaft 273 degrees
Hello Master 😁
Good afternoon, sensational videos.
It has the rear slider link that you placed on the rear swingarm. very handsome.
thanks!!!
Thanks for the comment, glad you are liking the videos so far. 👍 Appreciate it.
Yes, do you mean the chain adjusters? You can buy them here...

good morning! Does not deliver to Brazil. What a shame.
@@magalhaes4153 Ah sorry about that, yeah it is a long way to post It i suppose. 👍
@@SuggyRacingThank you very much, I am restoring my 2002 CB 500. I watch your videos every day. hahahaha
I'll check on eBay to see if it exists for sale. These stretchers look really nice. probably no one has it here in Brazil.
@@magalhaes4153 Glad it's helping you with the build. Good luck with it 👍
Where did you buy the suspension parts from matris? I can't seem to find the parts that fit the bike. Thanks!
@@dcsynklare I got them on eBay, someone was selling it second hand. It's an Italian company who make them, so it's probably been imported. Have a look on eBay as there were other shops that had some for sale that you get made to order. 👍
Good information! Another subscriber... a question: what power do you think you'll get from that engine? Regards from Portugal
@@JeanMelim Hey. Thanks for the follow, appreciate it. We are hoping for around the 60hp mark. Which isn't enormous, but for a small engine it would be quite the percentage increase on what is standard. My bike made 48hp, the maximum these bikes make as standard is around 50hp. So it's slightly under at the moment. There's loads you can do to these, we decided to do it a budget friendly as we could. The next stage is doing larger pistons and much more work. Hopefully this will be a noticeable difference in performance alongside other CB500 bikes 😁👍
@@SuggyRacing thanks for the reply. Yes 20% more it's a huge improvement! Good job!
@@JeanMelim I'll be posting the engine rebuild video soon, so keep an eye out for that one..it's a good video 😁
Hi Suggy, where did you get the chain adjusters?
@@dcsynklare Hi, they are from here:
www.aimracing.co.uk/
when the head was skimmed was the cuts of 20 then 10 in thou or metric? , good videos
@@rosemaryhamilton4726 Hi, Ben doesn't give the measurements away for the skimming as he's had to work it out. There's a few bits in the video were we have shown the process but don't give the measurements away. He has to have some 'trade secrets' 😄👍
@@SuggyRacing fair enough like
What sort of gain does a flow job get. Is it suitable for a road bike
@@andywilliams4063 It would definitely be good on a road bike, it all helps it with performance. Ben can probably answer better than me, but if you only do porting it will help, but not as much as having the other work done too. It's a balance getting it all running well. A good set up on the Dyno would help a lot too. 👍
short guides for exhaust valves. Can it disipate the heat like that?.
I'm not sure to be honest, I'll ask Ben and get back to you. Although assuming it will be fine with him doing it. 👍
Yes without issue. As a percentage I have only removed 5% of the EX guide which is minimal.
You are right in what you’re thinking, it is always better to have valve stability & heat dissipation over the small gain in flow which is why on any heads we do, we would only ever remove valve guide material if there is enough to remove without sacrificing stability & heat dissipation.
