First and foremost. You poor Brits and your taxes. I thought it was bad here in California…Second, thanks for your thoughts. Super cool that you got to review it for the launch. Looking forward to the full review. I got the white enamel on the J and will be using it as my “dress” watch. I know some people disagree with me, but my only criticism is that I think they released too many dials at once. Thanks as always!
It’s a nightmare mate honestly, we get taxed on tax and it’s become ridiculous. Am very happy to have been able to get hands on with the Ascent and I think it’s a cracking watch, you’ll love it I’m sure 👍👍
You said it Simon, the import costs via DHL are likely to be around £100 pushing up the price into the £400/£430 price bracket depending on spec. Nice and all as this watch is, it kills it for me. I'm not sure if there's any way for Erebus to avoid this by using a different shipping service. Helm for example invariably end up in the UK via Royal Mail with zero additional charges.
That is definitely going to be the BIG stumbling block for people buying this watch, as it’s not an inconsiderable amount of money. I’m still on the waiting list for a HELM (for all of them) and it seems like it’s been an eternity. Thanks for watching man 👍👍
I had wondered about the same question. Phoibos (HK) has UK and Europe (maybe USA as well?) delivery hubs to mitigate those issues.
@vicfg8052 good point but my understanding is the Phoibos no longer has a base in the UK, was too expensive. Perhaps as Erebus become more established, this could be something they look at 👍👍
@@WatchtheTime do you now have to pay import duties on goods from Europe. I rather like the new Argo from Phoibos.

I was tempted to buy the dive watch when it first came out, was put off buy the waiting list, can't remember exactly but Jody was promoting the watch, however it wasn't available for a few months later. The import tax is a deal breaker for me. Love the channel - keep up the good work.

Found the complaining about the dive watch hilarious. Clearly a well made and lovely looking watch. It seems to be with the constant reviews and never ending new watches that unnecessary granularity and critique is obsessed over. Just how I see it!

@@WatchtheTime just bought the black dial Origin. Made it to the USA in 3 days. It got to my house yesterday, but I am away on a dog sitting job until Monday. It is killing me not to drive an hour home to go get it lol
Jody said in his launch video that this asend was originally his first idea, and first watch he wanted to make. But didn't for the diver.
I'll ask you this who was Jody selling his watch to? His audience, not the general public, so he knew eveyone who watched him had divers. It's ridiculous to think that a diver would sell more, as it wasn't going to some big box store for non watch people to buy.
Thank you reviewing the watch, I got the blue one on an O-style bracelet on preorder a couple weeks ago and been looking for videos with the blue one being displayed longer.

I think there are some lovely options in this model. I don't mind the size and i think the case is lovely. But I already have a nice GADA and a backup, so I just don't have the space in my watchbox for this one. Still - this is a stunner !

In my opinion the star of the show is the purple helix, however I could never wear it as id have to count all the squares every time I looked at it....overall it's a belter for sure....🏴⌚🏴⌚

I’ve shared my reason why I don’t feel the need to buy one, but these are fantastic looking watches for sure, I would be getting the purple dial one if I were to pull the trigger and the helix dials look incredible. @@WatchtheTime I don’t understand why any would not like the variety of dials, he’s got it so dam near everyone can get a dial that they prefer, and down the line I’m sure you can get a nice little discount on the colour variations that aren’t moving as fast as the others. Definitely a solid watch my fav is the purple or the black and orange fume dial

I’ve ordered the purple fumé on o style and black strap pack on launch day. Now with about 40 hours left on pre order I’m seriously considering a black or white enamel on j style!

It’s a Smart casual ie Office , night out , good for formal if you don’t want to buy a dress watch and every day wear. It’s not a beach, outdoor activity watch due to finishing
Perhaps but if you fit to a rubber strap, I think it would work in those situations too, so should be ok for most things (bar diving). Thanks for watching mate 👍👍

The fact you plan to add both to your collection tells us all we need to know. I much prefer this to the Origin, and I'm sure it will sell well. I'm trying not to buy at the moment and with tax it's a bit more than I usually pay, but I can see myself regretting not buying in the future.

This is a much better effort than the diver but I'm not a fan of paying up front and waiting months. Adding the import taxes on top takes the shine off for me. I'm only buying affordables like this on a one in one out basis at present and there's nothing in my lower tier collection that I want to part with which is a happy place to be. I think this one will sell many more than the diver. I wonder if Jody will tell us later.
I hear you mate but I think it’s either like this through them or they do something similar on Kickstarter. It’s funny you mention, one in, one out as that exactly what I do, it takes a lot of being strict but ultimately it’s quality as you actually get to wear your watches, as I don’t like too big a collection tbh. At 8:13, the paint around the date window is flawed. Would this consider a warranty item if it was a production model? You may want to stay away from the enamel models.
I’m certain that any problem(s) won’t be evident in production models but yes, I’d assume it would be covered under warranty 👍👍

I don't understand, why can't we just ask Jody to underdeclare the cost of the watch (like just list it as $60 or whatever) when he ships it so we can avoid the import duties?
You raise a good point but I can only assume that it’s for insurance purposes, as at least this way, you and or Erebus would be covered for any losses 👍👍
Because that's illegal, serious penalties apply both for the seller and, I presume, for the buyer
My san Martin has just arrived direct from them : they declared it at $99 ( it was plenty more) , but it wasn’t picked up for duty anyway … delighted 👍

I believe they are genuine mineral dials, at least that is what has been said 👍👍
It’s hard to compare as in Uk AliExpress watches imported seem to avoid Tax and Vat by declaring watch value at $30. It’s a sense of perspective. These watches are of similar cost to Smiths watches which are also made in China maybe in the same factory. I’ve always liked the Monta Noble but that’s £1450 and the Blue Helix gives a very similar vibe for a third of the price. Nearly all micro brand watches are made in China or at lest all the parts.

@@WatchtheTime yeah... watch is perfect otherwise. Simple dial, amazing case, choice of bracelets, on-the-fly-adjustment clasp... but it's below 39mm. I tried, I really tried to wear smaller watches, but I 40mm seems to be an absolute minimum for me. My 3 fav watches in the box are between 40 and 42mm

They put out too many models in one go. They shot all their bullets. They should have kept a few bullets in the chamber for later. It's bad brand management IMHO. Anyway they aren't bad, but I bought another Christopher Ward instead. The Erebus logo looks like a cat's behind, according to the Mad Watch Collector's wife, and now I can't unsee that cat's bunghole. That and "Ascent" sounds like "ass scent' also puts me off
I respect your opinion mate but I stand by my comments. Entering the game strong with something for everyone after their first watch was slated so much, is a good move IMO and the stuff you mentioned is exactly the reason I don’t watch other peoples videos, especially before producing my own, I don’t want it to influence my opinion and subsequently the review. It's good that you mention the import duties and such, but it's the same when RUclipsrs point us EU citizens to Jomashop or any other shop outside of the EU, except Ali Express. At least here in Sweden we pay the prices including VAT directly on Ali. And then if an item is above around 145 Euro or 158 USD, we pay import duties when the item arrives at Customs.

Just recieved my San Martin SN0113W V2 from then. Great spec and finishing , blue dial is a stunner … for £166 DELIVERED with NO duty 😊. And btw - this comes from the same factory as the Erebus - that’s who makes them !! Marginal gain in quality with the Erebus , BUT …£££ ouch = why pay it..hype ?
