In early Western Canada and USA, it was too expensive to ship glass across the prairies and often even if they tried, the glass was often broken by the time it reached its destination. There for, to let light in, the settlers used oiled cloth to cover windows. You could only see shadows through it, but it did let in some light. It did not keep out the winds and cold so well though, so winter they would use wooden shutters to block the cold winds. As you can imagine, this added to what we call “cabin fever” with all the darkness for such long winters as we have in Canada at least.
Your little windows reminded me of oil cloth windows 🥰❤️. I am not old enough to have lived in a house with such, but my Mom did and the generations before often did.
Goodness, I never knew that, and I can see that it would give cabin fever. Thank goodness things have moved on from then 😊

Thank you 🌸🌸🌸
Could you please tell us where we can get that fabric from?
Hi Dawn, I’ve just had a quick look and can see it on EBay, Etsy and Amazon (here in the UK, not sure about overseas) - I typed in ‘French Lavender Print Fabric’ - hope this helps x
